New and Old Results in Resultant Theory
Resultants are getting increasingly important in modern theoretical physics:
they appear whenever one deals with non-linear (polynomial) equations, with
non-quadratic forms or with non-Gaussian integrals. Being a subject of more
than three-hundred-year research, resultants are of course rather well studied:
a lot of explicit formulas, beautiful properties and intriguing relationships
are known in this field. We present a brief overview of these results,
including both recent and already classical. Emphasis is made on explicit
formulas for resultants, which could be practically useful in a future physics

Effect of rhenium on the structure and properties of the weld metal of a molybdenum alloy
The structure and properties of welds made in molybdenum alloy VM-1 as a function of rhenium concentrations in the weld metal were studied. Rhenium was introduced into the weld using rhenium wire and tape or wires of Mo-47Re and Mo-52Re alloys. The properties of the weld metal were studied by means of metallographic techniques, electron microscopy, X-ray analysis, and autoradiography. The plasticity of the weld metal sharply was found to increase with increasing concentration of rhenium up to 50%. During welding, a decarburization process was observed which was more pronounced at higher concentrations of rhenium
Exact 2-point function in Hermitian matrix model
J. Harer and D. Zagier have found a strikingly simple generating function for
exact (all-genera) 1-point correlators in the Gaussian Hermitian matrix model.
In this paper we generalize their result to 2-point correlators, using Toda
integrability of the model. Remarkably, this exact 2-point correlation function
turns out to be an elementary function - arctangent. Relation to the standard
2-point resolvents is pointed out. Some attempts of generalization to 3-point

BGWM as Second Constituent of Complex Matrix Model
Earlier we explained that partition functions of various matrix models can be
constructed from that of the cubic Kontsevich model, which, therefore, becomes
a basic elementary building block in "M-theory" of matrix models. However, the
less topical complex matrix model appeared to be an exception: its
decomposition involved not only the Kontsevich tau-function but also another
constituent, which we now identify as the Brezin-Gross-Witten (BGW) partition
function. The BGW tau-function can be represented either as a generating
function of all unitary-matrix integrals or as a Kontsevich-Penner model with
potential 1/X (instead of X^3 in the cubic Kontsevich model).Comment: 42 page
The incarnation of the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model in (NO)[Cu(NO3)3]
The topology of the magnetic interactions of the copper spins in the
nitrosonium nitratocuprate (NO)[Cu(NO3)3] suggests that it could be a
realization of the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model, whose ground state was argued to be
either a resonating valence bond (RVB) state or a valence bond crystal (VBC).
The measurement of thermodynamic and resonant properties reveals a behavior
inherent to low dimensional spin S = 1/2 systems and provides indeed no

Theoretical model for the superconducting and magnetically ordered borocarbides
We present a theory of superconductivity in presence of a general magnetic
structure in a form suitable for the description of complex magnetic phases
encountered in borocarbides. The theory, complemented with some details of the
band structure and with the magnetic phase diagram, may explain the nearly
reentrant behaviour and the anisotropy of the upper critical field of HoNi2B2C.
The onset of the helical magnetic order depresses superconductivity via the
reduction of the interaction between phonons and electrons caused by the
formation of magnetic Bloch states. At mean field level, no additional
suppression of superconductivity is introduced by the incommensurability of the

Interplay between lattice, orbital, and magnetic degrees of freedom in the chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals
The chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals C21H19CuF12N4O6 were studied
using the x-ray diffraction and ab initio band structure calculations. We show
that the crystal structure modification at T=146 K, associated with the spin
crossover transition, induces the changes of the orbital order in half of the
Cu sites. This in turn results in the switch of the magnetic interaction sign
in accordance with the Goodenough-Kanamori-Andersen theory of the coupling
between the orbital and spin degrees of freedom.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Elastic instability in stratified core annular flow
We study experimentally the interfacial instability between a layer of dilute
polymer solution and water flowing in a thin capillary. The use of microfluidic
devices allows us to observe and quantify in great detail the features of the
flow. At low velocities, the flow takes the form of a straight jet, while at
high velocities, steady or advected wavy jets are produced. We demonstrate that
the transition between these flow regimes is purely elastic -- it is caused by
viscoelasticity of the polymer solution only. The linear stability analysis of
the flow in the short-wave approximation captures quantitatively the flow
diagram. Surprisingly, unstable flows are observed for strong velocities,
whereas convected flows are observed for low velocities. We demonstrate that
this instability can be used to measure rheological properties of dilute
polymer solutions that are difficult to assess otherwise.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
