Morita contexts as lax functors
Monads are well known to be equivalent to lax functors out of the terminal
category. Morita contexts are here shown to be lax functors out of the chaotic
category with two objects. This allows various aspects in the theory of Morita
contexts to be seen as special cases of general results about lax functors. The
account we give of this could serve as an introduction to lax functors for
those familiar with the theory of monads. We also prove some very general
results along these lines relative to a given 2-comonad, with the classical
case of ordinary monad theory amounting to the case of the identity comonad on

C*-algebras of Hilbert module product systems
We consider a class of C*-algebras associated to one parameter continuous
tensor product systems of Hilbert modules, which can be viewed as continuous
counterparts of Pimsner's Toeplitz algebras. By exhibiting a homotopy of
quasihomomorphisms, we prove that those algebras are -contractible. One
special case is closely related to the Rieffel-Wiener-Hopf extension of a
crossed product by R considered by Rieffel and by Pimsner and Voiculescu, and
can be used to produce a new proof of Connes' analogue of the Thom isomorphism
and in particular of Bott periodicity. Another special case is closely related
to Arveson's spectral C*-algebras, and is used to settle Arveson's problem of
computing their K-theory, extending earlier results of Zacharias to cover the
general case.Comment: 11 pages (added an example and an appendix, corrected typos and

Evidence for Narrow S=+1 Baryon Resonance in Photo-production from Neutron
The gamma n -> K+ K- n reaction on 12C has been studied by measuring both K+
and K- at forward angles. A sharp baryon resonance peak was observed at 1.54 +-
0.01 GeV with a width smaller than 25 MeV and a Gaussian significance of 4.6
sigma. The strangeness quantum number (S) of the baryon resonance is +1. It can
be interpreted as a molecular meson-baryon resonance or alternatively as an
exotic 5-quark state (uudd{s_bar}) that decays into a K+ and a neutron. The
resonance is consistent with the lowest member of an anti-decuplet of baryons
predicted by the chiral soliton model.Comment: 12 pages, 3 encapsulated postscript figure
Temperature dependence of the energy dissipation in dynamic force microscopy
The dissipation of energy in dynamic force microscopy is usually described in
terms of an adhesion hysteresis mechanism. This mechanism should become less
efficient with increasing temperature. To verify this prediction we have
measured topography and dissipation data with dynamic force microscopy in the
temperature range from 100 K up to 300 K. We used
3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) grown on KBr(001), both
materials exhibiting a strong dissipation signal at large frequency shifts. At
room temperature, the energy dissipated into the sample (or tip) is 1.9
eV/cycle for PTCDA and 2.7 eV/cycle for KBr, respectively, and is in good
agreement with an adhesion hysteresis mechanism. The energy dissipation over
the PTCDA surface decreases with increasing temperature yielding a negative
temperature coefficient. For the KBr substrate, we find the opposite behaviour:
an increase of dissipated energy with increasing temperature. While the
negative temperature coefficient in case of PTCDA agrees rather well with the
adhesion hysteresis model, the positive slope found for KBr points to a
hitherto unknown dissipation mechanism

Redmond Red as a Redox Probe for the DNA-Mediated Detection of Abasic Sites
Redmond Red, a fluoropore containing a redox-active phenoxazine core, has been explored as a new electrochemical probe for the detection of abasic sites in double-stranded DNA. The electrochemical behavior of Redmond Red-modified DNA at gold surfaces exhibits stable, quasi-reversible voltammetry with a midpoint potential centered around −50 mV versus NHE. Importantly, with Redmond Red positioned opposite an abasic site within the DNA duplex, the electrochemical response is significantly enhanced compared to Redmond Red positioned across from a base. Redmond Red, reporting only if well-stacked in the duplex, represents a sensitive probe to detect abasic sites electrochemically in a DNA-mediated reaction
Personalising psychotherapies for depression using a novel mixed methods approach: An example from Morita Therapy
This is the final version. Available on open access from BMC via the DOI in this recordBackground
Current quantitative methods for personalising psychotherapies for
depression are unlikely to be able to inform clinical decision-making for hundreds of
years. Novel alternative methods to generate hypotheses for prospective testing
are therefore required, and we showcase mixed methods as one such approach.
By exploring patients’ perspectives in-depth, and integrating qualitative and
quantitative data at the level of the individual, we may identify new potential
psychosocial predictors of psychotherapy outcomes, potentially informing the
personalisation of depression treatment in a shorter timeframe. Using Morita
Therapy (a Japanese psychotherapy) as an exemplar, we thus explored how
Morita Therapy recipients’ views on treatment acceptability explain their adherence
and response to treatment.
Methods
The Morita Trial incorporated a pilot randomised controlled trial of Morita
Therapy versus treatment as usual for depression, and post-treatment qualitative
interviews. We recruited trial participants from General Practice record searches in
Devon, UK, and purposively sampled data from 16 participants for our mixed
methods analysis. We developed typologies of participants’ views from our
qualitative themes, and integrated these with quantitative data on number of
sessions attended and whether participants responded to treatment in a joint
typologies and statistics display. We enriched our analysis using participant
vignettes to demonstrate each typology.
Results
We demonstrate that (1) participants who could identify with the principles of
Morita Therapy typically responded to treatment, regardless of how many sessions
they attended, whilst those whose orientation towards treatment was incompatible
with Morita Therapy did not respond to treatment, again regardless of treatment
adherence; (2) participants whose personal circumstances impeded their
opportunity to engage in Morita Therapy attended the fewest sessions, though still
benefitted from treatment if the principles resonated with them.
Conclusions
We identified new potential relationships between ‘orientation’ and
outcomes, and ‘opportunity’ and adherence, which could not have been identified
using existing non-integrative methods. This mixed methods approach warrants
replication in future trials and with other psychotherapies to generate hypotheses,
based on typologies (or profiles) of patients for whom a treatment is more or less
likely to be suitable, to be tested in prospective trials.National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)University of Exete
Radiative Muon Capture on Hydrogen and the Induced Pseudoscalar Coupling
The first measurement of the elementary process is reported. A photon pair spectrometer was used to measure
the partial branching ratio ( for photons of k >
60 MeV. The value of the weak pseudoscalar coupling constant determined from
the partial branching ratio is , where the first error is the quadrature sum of statistical
and systematic uncertainties and the second error is due to the uncertainty in
, the decay rate of the ortho to para molecule. This
value of g_p is 1.5 times the prediction of PCAC and pion-pole dominance.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX type, 3 figures (encapsulated postscript), submitted
