    AbstractImprovement in transduction efficiency makes it possible to convert blood cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC). In this study, we generated an iPSC line from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) donated by a patient who exhibited memory deficit at age 59; outcome of positron emission tomography scan is consistent with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Integration-free CytoTune-iPS Sendai Reprogramming factors which include Sendai virus particles of the four Yamanaka factors Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc were introduced to PBMC to convert them to iPSCs without retention of virus. Three germ layer differentiation was induced to demonstrate the pluripotency of these iPSCs

    Gender Differences in Psychosocial Determinants of University Students' Intentions to Buy Fair Trade Products

    This study examined gender differences in university students’ intentions to buy fair trade (FT) products through the lens of the moral-norm-extended theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Data were obtained from 782 students at the University of Luxemburg. Results of structural equation analysis indicated that the inclusion of moral norms increased the explained variance in behavioural intentions from 62% to 68%. Compared to men, women reported more favourable attitude, higher moral obligation, and stronger intentions toward buying FT products. Moderating analyses showed that the attitude–intentions relationship was stronger for men, whereas the perceived behavioural control–intentions relationship was stronger for women. The implications of the moderation analysis are that sustainability professionals seeking to encourage university students’ intentions to buy FT products should develop gender-targeted interventions: for men, more emphasis should be placed on attitude toward buying FT products (i.e., the advantages of adopting this behaviour), and for women, more emphasis should be placed on perceived behavioural control (e.g., factors that facilitate the purchase of FT products)

    Companion Diagnostics for Breast Cancer Chemotherapeutics

    Chemotherapy plays a major role in breast cancer treatment. However, not every chemotherapeutics is appropriate for each cancer due to the person’s individual cancer characteristics and whether the patient has developed chemoresistance to a particular drug. In this research, the InVitro-Q is used to detect subtle differences in tumor cell proliferation post-treatment with four-breast cancer chemotherapeutics used: paclitaxel, docetaxel, nocodazole, and cytochalasin B. Our multi-well cell-based sensor that can monitor real-time biological changes in living cells, such as mass redistribution, and viscoelasticity. This system provides unique kinetic information regarding the phenotypic change in the cells post treatment. Each drug induces apoptosis by targeting a different mechanism of action. Each drug was assayed for 48h with MCF-7 or SK-Br-3 breast cancer cells, and data collected. Post analysis we created quantitative projection regarding the efficacy of each drug on the specific cancer type

    The significance of ammonium adsorption on lower laguna madre (texas) sediments

    The work presented in this dissertation focuses on + 4 NH in marine sediments and attempts to elucidate some of the specific pathways and processes affecting + 4 NH in coastal marine regions. The majority of work was conducted in the Laguna Madre estuary. A major feature of the estuary is the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) connecting the Lower Laguna Madre to Baffin Bay. Establishment of the GIWW has altered the hydrodynamics of the estuary, reduced seagrass coverage and increased sediment mobility resulting in frequent maintenance by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. GIWW sediment relocation associated with dredging is investigated to determine potential influence of + 4 NH release during resuspension. GIWW sediments are characterized by extremely high concentrations of porewater and exchangeable + 4 NH as well as reducing ions (millimolar HS-), and significant release hours to days after resuspension was observed during laboratory experiments. Using sediment + 4 NH porewater and exchangeable quantities, release potentials are calculated for a dredging event conducted in 1989 and results indicate that potential release from the dredging event are comparable to monthly inputs from intact GIWW and seagrass sediments. Reducing condition influence on + 4 NH adsorption dynamics was tested through resuspension experiments over a wide range of initial bulk concentrations in laboratory determined redox conditions. Significant increase in + 4 NH adsorption was observed in anoxic conditions. Calculations of the apparent partition coefficient (K*) were determined to be affected as well and implications to diagenetic models is explored. Observations in the laboratory were tested in field monitoring. Analysis of wind measurements established strong potential for interaction with sediments over the collection period. Measurements of water column + 4 NH , total suspended solids, and chlorophyll exhibited highest concentrations and correlation in areas close to the GIWW. Concentration measurements were combined with flux measurements in a model system designed to integrate field observations. Several model cases were considered including and excluding sediment resuspension. Model simulations including sediment resuspension maintained water column concentrations similar to field observations

    Microbial-induced carbonate precipitation using a sustainable treatment technique / Armstrong Ighodalo Omoregie … [et.al]

    Biocementation is a green treatment technique which makes use of microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) process to enhance the geotechnical features of substandard soils. The objective of this study was to conduct a biocement test in laboratoryscale using native urease-producing bacteria to improve the surface strength of poorly graded soil. Selected sand samples were pre-mixed with native bacterial culture and the cementation solution before being compacted into their respective columns. After completing the biocement process, all the sand columns were allowed to air-dry at room temperature (26o C) for 14 days before the treated sands were removed from their respective moulds. Unconfined compression strength (UCS) test was performed on the moulds to determine their strengths, while quick acid test and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content measurement were conveyed to analyse the precipitated CaCO3 minerals. The results showed that the native urease-producing bacteria could bind soil particles together. The proficiency of this treatment process to improve the strength of soil samples varied among the specimen samples, leading to a non-homogeneous distribution of CaCO3 contents in the specimens. The UCS test showed that the sand treated with native isolate NB 28 had the highest strength (0.219 N/mm2 ), sustaining a force of 1.020 kN, while the control strain (Sporosarcina pasteurii DSM 33) had the lowest strength (0.143 N/mm2 ) with a sustaining force of 0.697 kN. The findings in this study suggest that the native urease-producing bacteria isolated from Sarawak limestone cave can be used as alternative MICP agents for the biocement application for sustainability in the construction industry
