Individual Differences Related to Strategy Shifting: Who Shifts and Why?

This thesis investigated the association of cognitive abilities and strategy shifting within a procedural-motor task. College students traced or drew various forms of a figure-8 before completing a battery of cognitive tests. A pilot study identified three distinct strategies for drawing a figure-8, whereas the current study manipulated the figure-8 stimuli to encourage these strategies at various points. Phase 1 had two counterbalanced conditions which instructed participants to trace versus draw a rotated figure-8. Phase 2 gradually morphed a figure-8 such as to encourage the three predominant strategies. Phase 3 was a condition which included stimuli from Phases 1 and 2. The data suggest that Perceptual flexibility was associated with effective strategy shifting in all three main phases of the experiment, whereas Verbal and Executive flexibility had no impact on strategy shifting. Furthermore, Perceptual flexibility was associated with more time spent planning, which could account for the superior performance

Estimating spillovers using imprecisely measured networks

In many experimental contexts, whether and how network interactions impact the outcome of interest for both treated and untreated individuals are key concerns. Networks data is often assumed to perfectly represent these possible interactions. This paper considers the problem of estimating treatment effects when measured connections are, instead, a noisy representation of the true spillover pathways. We show that existing methods, using the potential outcomes framework, yield biased estimators in the presence of this mismeasurement. We develop a new method, using a class of mixture models, that can account for missing connections and discuss its estimation via the Expectation-Maximization algorithm. We check our method's performance by simulating experiments on real network data from 43 villages in India. Finally, we use data from a previously published study to show that estimates using our method are more robust to the choice of network measure

Coal comfort: Pacific islands on collision course with Australia over emissions

Commentary: During 2017, Fiji is president of negotiations under the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).  It is the first time the talks have been headed by a small island developing country, and Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama plans to use the 23rd Conference of Parties to highlight the impacts of climate change on island states.  Even as Pacific island leaders demand greater action to reduce emissions, the Australian government is supporting new coal mines at home and a dramatic increase in coal exports.  This commentary focuses on Pacific leadership in the global fight to avoid catastrophic changes to the climate system.  It suggests determined diplomacy by island states may help shift international opinion in favour of urgent action to reduce emissions. However, Pacific states must first shine a spotlight on their recalcitrant neighbour, and avoid being silenced by Australian ‘climate diplomacy’

The Effects of Moral Obligations to Others and Others\u27 Influence on Veterinarians\u27 Attitudes toward and Recommendations to Utilize Antibiotics in Feedlot Cattle

Decisions to behave in particular ways depend on beliefs, social norms, perceived constraints, and attitudes. Recently, this perspective has been expanded to consider the role of moral obligations in such decisions. Largely ignored are the possible interrelations among moral obligations to significant others and significant others’ influences as they interact to affect decisions. This is of particular interest when a strong moral obligation toward a significant other is associated with strong behavioral expectations by that same significant other. We investigated the interrelations among moral obligations to, and behavioral expectations from, 11 types of significant others in the cattle feeding industry to determine their joint influences on attitudes toward antibiotic use and recommendations for antibiotics in feedlot cattle, drawing data from a random sample of feedlot veterinarians (n=103). Results show that subjective norms and a sense of moral obligation affect both the attitudes toward, and the recommendations for, the use of antibiotics in feedlot cattle. We found several significant interactions among subjective norms and moral obligations, which suggests that perceived moral obligations to peers, clients, and the regulatory norm-setting sector associated with the feedlot industry increase the impact of social pressures from those sectors on the recommendation to use antibiotics in acutely sick, chronically sick, and high-risk feedlot cattle

Flight Investigation of the Cooling Characteristics of a Two-row Radial Engine Installation III : Engine Temperature Distribution

The temperature distribution of a two-row radial engine in a twin-engine airplane has been investigated in a series of flight tests. The test engine was operated over a wide range of conditions at density altitudes of 5000 and 20,000 feet; quantitative results are presented showing the effects of flight and engine variables upon average engine temperature and over-all temperature spread. Discussions of the effect of the variables on the shape of the temperature patterns and on the temperature distribution of individual cylinders are also included. The results indicate that, for the tests conducted, the temperature distribution patterns were chiefly determined by the fuel-air ratio and cooling-air distributions. It was possible to calculate individual cylinder temperature, on the assumption of equal power distribution among cylinders, to within an average of plus or minus 14 degrees F. of the actual temperature. A considerable change occurred in either the spread or the thrust axis, the average engine fuel-air ratio, the engine speed, the power, or the blower ratio. Smaller effects on the temperature pattern were noticed with a change in cowl-flap opening and altitude. In most of the tests, a change in conditions affected the temperature of the barrels less than that of the heads. The variation of flight and engine variables had a negligible effect on the temperature distributions of the individual cylinders. (author
