    An Interpretation of Genesis 1:1-2:3 in Light of Ancient Near Eastern Traditions and Modern-Day Science

    In the fields of religion and science, people seek to comprehend the world in which they live. According to the Judeo-Christian religious tradition, the universe and all its elements were created by an omniscient, omnipotent God in accordance to his holy design and purpose. This explanation, articulated in the book of Genesis, has influenced several thousand years of human history. However, the literal 24-hour days-of-creation explanation and interpretation deduced from the Genesis 1:1-2:3 creation account is contested by recent scientific discoveries as an invalid explanation for the origins of the universe and mankind. To explore the “how” and “why” questions of the origins, this project presents an interpretation of the Genesis 1:1-2:3 creation account in light of its ancient Near Eastern context and compares this interpretation to modern-day scientific understanding. The evaluation of this comparison reveals that theistic evolution is the best explanation, satisfying the veracity of both religion and science

    A Case Study in Revitalizing a State Library Association and Keeping It Vital during COVID

    The Kentucky Medical Library Association (KMLA) is an organization dedicated to building a networking community and providing resources to the health sciences and medical librarians of Kentucky. Medical and health science libraries within the state of Kentucky are encouraged to become annual members of KMLA. Organization membership exists on two levels: (1) individual and (2) institutional. Individual membership includes access to three KMLA business meetings a year, voting rights at business meetings, any conferences KMLA holds, an opportunity for continuing education (CE) reimbursement, and access to any CEs presented by KMLA. Institutional memberships are unique in that they provide interlibrary loan reciprocity among member institutions. Over the previous four years, KMLA has experienced diminishing membership, a lack of interest from members in serving on the KMLA Executive Committee, insufficient documentation on association practices, and a centric involvement that surrounded Louisville institutions. Kentucky has endured several hospital closures and restructurings over the last five years. That change has also brought about several medical library closures; despite that, Kentucky health sciences and medical libraries have seen a recent growth in new health sciences and medical librarians. In turn, KMLA’s Executive Committee (President, Secretary, and Treasurer) has noticed a change in overall KMLA membership, attendance, and interest

    Making A Difference: Year Two Report of the Pennsylvania High School Coaching Initiative

    This report examines the implementation of the second year of three for the Pennsylvania High School Coaching Initiative (PAHSCI). Funded by the Annenberg Foundation, this initiative focuses on literacy and math coaches providing support to teachers from across the major subject areas to create literacy-rich classrooms in which students actively engage in learning tasks that deepen their content knowledge and strengthen their abilities to think critically and communicate well. This report presents findings from the first two years of research. It includes survey research as well as in-depth qualitative research in participating schools and districts and provides recommendations for PAHSCI stakeholders as they refine the program and for other education reformers as they consider the benefits of instructional coaching as a strategy for improving high schools and student achievement

These practices are organized into three spheres: Conditions for Teaching, Student-Centered School Community, and Instructional Program. For each sphere, the report offers broad strategies and specific practices to enact the strategies. Nuanced school case studies show how the practices can work synergistically and coherently in schools to help students succeed

    Microbes and masculinity: Does exposure to pathogenic cues alter women's preferences for male facial masculinity and beardedness?

    Women’s preferences for men’s androgen dependent secondary sexual traits are proposed to be phenotypically plastic in response to exposure to pathogens and pathogen disgust. While previous studies report that masculinity in facial shape is more attractive to women who have recently been exposed to pathogenic cues and who are high in self-reported pathogen disgust, facial hair may reduce male attractiveness under conditions of high pathogens as beards are a possible breeding ground for disease carrying ectoparasites. In the present study, we test whether women’s preferences for beardedness and facial masculinity vary due to exposure to different pathogenic cues. Participants (N = 688, mean age + 1SD = 31.94 years, SD = 6.69, range = 18–67) rated the attractiveness of facial composite stimuli of men when they were clean-shaven or fully bearded. These stimuli were also manipulated in order to vary sexual dimorphism by ±50%. Ratings were conducted before and after exposure to one of four experimental treatments in which participants were primed to either high pathogens (e.g. infected cuts), ectoparasites (e.g. body lice), a mixture of pathogens and ectoparasites, or a control condition (e.g. innocuous liquids). Participants then completed the three-domain disgust scale measuring attitudes to moral, sexual and pathogen disgust. We predicted that women would prefer facial masculinity following exposure to pathogenic cues, but would show reduced preferences for facial hair following exposure to ectoparasites. Women preferred full beards over clean-shaven faces and masculinised over feminised faces. However, none of the experimental treatments influenced the direction of preferences for facial masculinity or beardedness. We also found no association between women’s self-reported pathogen disgust and their preferences for facial masculinity. However, there was a weak positive association between moral disgust scores and preferences for facial masculinity, which might reflect conservatism and preferences for gender typicality in faces. Women’s preferences for beards were positively associated with their pathogen disgust, which runs contrary to our predictions and may reflect preferences for high quality individuals who can withstand any costs of beardedness, although further replications are necessary before firm conclusions can be made. We conclude that there is little support for pathogenic exposure being a mechanism that underpins women’s directional preferences for masculine traits

    Oxidative carboxylation of 1-decene to 1,2-decylene carbonate

    Cyclic carbonates are valuable chemicals for the chemical industry and thus, their efficient synthesis is essential. Commonly, cyclic carbonates are synthesised in a two-step process involving the epoxidation of an alkene and a subsequent carboxylation to the cyclic carbonate. To couple both steps into a direct oxidative carboxylation reaction would be desired from an economical view point since additional work-up procedures can be avoided. Furthermore, the efficient sequestration of CO2, a major greenhouse gas, would also be highly desirable. In this work, the oxidative carboxylation of 1-decene is investigated using supported gold catalysts for the epoxidation step and tetrabutylammonium bromide in combination with zinc bromide for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide in the second step. The compatibility of the catalysts for both steps is explored and a detailed study of catalyst deactivation using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy is reported. Promising selectivity of the 1,2-decylene carbonate is observed using a one-pot two-step approach

    Gold–palladium colloids as catalysts for hydrogen peroxide synthesis, degradation and methane oxidation: effect of the PVP stabiliser

    The reactivity of AuPd nanoparticle catalysts prepared by sol immobilisation is often explained by a structure activity relationship based solely on particle size or composition. In this contribution, we compare colloidal AuPd nanoparticles stabilised with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with the same AuPd nanoparticles supported on TiO2 for the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide and methane oxidation to methanol. We show that while the particles have similar rates of H2O2 synthesis, supporting the particles can affect the rates of H2O2 decomposition and hence the effectiveness of the catalyst for reactions which rely on H2O2 as an initiator or oxidant. We demonstrate that the absence of PVP results in high rates of H2O2 decomposition in methane oxidation experiments but this can be minimised by the addition of PVP to the reactor. These results also show that for AuPd alloys, both polymer stabiliser and support effects need to be taken into account when describing the activity of the nanoparticles and the active sites should in fact be thought of as a metal–support–polymer interface with many degrees of freedom

    Mixed brittle and viscous strain localisation in pelagic sediments seaward of the Hikurangi margin, New Zealand

    Calcareous‐pelagic input sediments are present at several subduction zones and deform differently to their siliciclastic counterparts. We investigate deformation in calcareous‐pelagic sediments drilled ~20 km seaward of the Hikurangi megathrust toe at Site U1520 during IODP Expeditions 372 and 375. Clusters of normal faults and subhorizontal stylolites in the sediments indicate both brittle faulting and viscous pressure solution operated at 150°C where frictional (possibly seismic) slip likely predominates
