    Critical Learning Skills For Business Students

    A survey addressing critical skills for business students was developed and disseminated. Sixteen critical skills (such as critical thinking and time management) were identified as skills that need to be acquired in order for business students to be successful in their advanced courses and careers. The survey was disseminated and taken by several business faculty at various institutions. The survey participants were asked to rank both the importance of a particular skill and where their students currently rank in possessing this skill. This paper discusses the format of the survey, presents the survey results, analyzes the top three critical skills, and mentions future research opportunities

    Associations among neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation, physical activity facilities, and physical activity in youth during the transition from childhood to adolescence

    BACKGROUND: This study aims to examine the longitudinal association of neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation (SED) with physical activity in youth during the transition from elementary to middle school, and to determine if access to physical activity facilities moderates this relationship. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Transitions and Activity Changes in Kids (TRACK) study, which was a multilevel, longitudinal study designed to identify the factors that influence changes in physical activity as youth transition from elementary to middle school. The analytic sample for the current study included 660 youth with complete data in grades 5 (baseline) and 7 (follow-up). A repeated measures multilevel framework was employed to examine the relationship between SED and physical activity over time and the potential moderating role of elements of the built environment. RESULTS: Decreases in physical activity varied by the degree of neighborhood SED with youth residing in the most deprived neighborhoods experiencing the greatest declines in physical activity. Access to supportive physical activity facilities did not moderate this relationship. CONCLUSION: Future research studies are needed to better understand how neighborhood SED influences youth physical activity over time

    Levels of the E2 interacting protein TopBP1 modulate papillomavirus maintenance stage replication

    The evolutionarily conserved DNA topoisomerase II beta-binding protein 1 (TopBP1) functions in DNA replication, DNA damage response, and cell survival. We analyzed the role of TopBP1 in human and bovine papillomavirus genome replication. Consistent with prior reports, TopBP1 co-localized in discrete nuclear foci and was in complex with papillomavirus E2 protein. Similar to E2, TopBP1 is recruited to the region of the viral origin of replication during G1/S and early S phase. TopBP1 knockdown increased, while over-expression decreased transient virus replication, without affecting cell cycle. Similarly, using cell lines harboring HPV-16 or HPV-31 genome, TopBP1 knockdown increased while over-expression reduced viral copy number relative to genomic DNA. We propose a model in which TopBP1 serves dual roles in viral replication: it is essential for initiation of replication yet it restricts viral copy number

    The rs72613567:TA polymorphism in HSD17B13 is associated with survival benefit after development of hepatocellular carcinoma

    BACKGROUND: The influence of genetic factors on survival following a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. AIM: To assess whether genetic polymorphisms influencing the susceptibility to develop HCC are also associated with HCC prognosis. METHODS: We included United Kingdom Biobank (UKB) participants diagnosed with HCC after study enrolment. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Patients were followed from the date of HCC diagnosis to death or the registry completion date. Five HCC susceptibility loci were investigated: rs738409 (PNPLA3), rs58542926 (TM6SF2); rs72613567 (HSD17B13); rs2242652 (TERT) and rs708113 (WNT3A). The associations between these genetic variants and HCC mortality risk were assessed using Cox regression, adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, aetiology, severity of the underlying liver disease and receipt of curative HCC treatment. RESULTS: The final sample included 439 patients; 74% had either non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or alcohol-related liver disease. There were 321 deaths during a mean follow-up of 1.9 years per participant. Kaplan-Meier survival estimates at 1, 3 and 5 years were 53.2%, 31.2% and 22.6% respectively. In multivariate analysis, rs72613567:TA (HSD17B13) was the only genetic susceptibility variant significantly associated with all-cause mortality risk (aHR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.61-0.90; p = 0.003). Other associated factors were Baveno stage 3-4 (aHR: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.05-2.59; p = 0.03) and HCC treatment with curative intent (aHR: 0.25; 95% CI: 0.17-0.37; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The rs72613567:TA polymorphism in HSD17B13 is not only associated with a reduction in the risk of developing HCC but with a survival benefit in HCC once established. Therapeutic inhibition of HSD17B13 may augment survival in individuals with HCC

    Stepping It Up: Walking Behaviors in Children Transitioning from 5th to 7th Grade

    The purpose of this study was to (1) describe children’s walking behaviors in 5th to 7th grade and change over time and (2) examine associations between walking behaviors and Walk Score®. Participants consisted of n = 586 students from the Transitions and Activity Changes in Kids (TRACK) Study. Children reported any walking behavior (e.g., exercise and transportation) over the past five days. Walk Score was calculated based on children’s home address. Descriptive statistics summarized walking behaviors by gender and time, and repeated measure mixed models examined the relationship between walking behaviors and Walk Score. Approximately 46.8% and 19.2% of 5th grade children reported walking for exercise and transportation, respectively, and these percentages declined through 7th grade. Girls reported higher levels of total walking behavior and walking for exercise than boys (p \u3c 0.001). Girls with a higher Walk Score had 63% higher odds of reporting walking for transportation than girls with a lower Walk Score (OR = 1.63, 95% CI = 1.02, 2.62). Walking behaviors among children were infrequent with significant declines over time, and of the nine associations examined with Walk Score, only one was significant. Efforts should prioritize frequent walking behavior and community design to increase children’s physical activity
