From Obsession to Confession: A False Confession Paradigm in the Murder of Jon Benet Ramsey

In this study, we used a fact pattern similar to the John Mark Karr scenario to examine perceptions of DNA and confession evidence. Specifically, we hypothesized that DNA evidence, confessor level of psychopathology, and presence or absence of Miranda protections would affect participants’ perceptions of guilt and attitudes towards the interrogation process. One hundred nine undergraduates read a two-page summary based on John Mark Karr’s confession. Summaries varied based on psychopathology of confessor, the presence or absence of DNA evidence, and the provision of Miranda warnings prior to confession. Part I: Oxidation of Heavy Metal Sulfides in Relation to the Environment; Part II: Fundamental Theory & Experiments Concerning Gas Chromatography & Mass Spectrometry

Oxidation of heavy metal sulfides is a thermodynamically spontaneous process. Because of this, metal sulfides in the presence of oxygen are not stable. Currently there are over 100 streams and rivers, within the U.S., contaminated with heavy metal mine drainage; therefore an approved method of restoration is necessary. Precipitation of heavy metals as sulfides using H2S as a reductant has been favorably reviewed as a restorative technique to clean up mining areas. However, using this technique on the laboratory scale does not prove to be a viable answer and shows strong pH dependence. In the past three years the ILI (Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement) has awarded funding to over 50 institutions, in the U.S., for the purchase of GC/MS. Therefore, there is a great need for laboratory experiments to properly train students in this field in American universities. A strong theoretical treatment for sophomore-level students is presented within this thesis and from this, three experiments have been developed in order to educate young professionals seeking a career in the field of chemistry

What is the Economic Cost of Overweight Children?

Childhood overweight is now considered the most common health problem for children in the U.S. An important question is whether parents and policymakers will see rising medical expenditures for these children while they are still young. We estimate the overweight attributable fraction (OAF) of children’s medical expenditures, controlling for other factors that may cause expenditures to differ. We find that medical expenditures for overweight children are on average $12.09 higher per year (OAF = 0.5 percent), but confidence intervals are large and include zero. We also find little difference in the types of principal diagnoses per visit reported by weight status.

Introduction : Critical Blogging in Archaeology

This special volume of Internet Archaeology collects the leading voices of blogging in archaeology to provide a critical examination of informal, online self-publication. This collection of articles is one result of over a decade of digital communication; the confluence of a conversation that grew from a few lonely voices to a tumultuous cacophony. Even so, blogging has had very little scrutiny in wider archaeological publication (but see Caraher 2008; Kansa and Deblauwe 2011). The first movement toward this volume was the Blogging Archaeology session at the 2011 Society for American Archaeology meetings, accompanied by a "Blog Carnival," a groundbreaking effort to foment reflexive discussion prior to the conference. Several participants of this original session and blog carnival have contributed to this volume; these articles are intermingled with perspectives from contributors who have started blogging in the intervening time, and with peer review comments from archaeologists who have blogged for a long time, and from those who do not blog at all

Investigating the Ecology of the Mound-Building Ant, \u3ci\u3eAcanthomyops Claviger\u3c/i\u3e (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), in Re-Created Prairie

Acanthomyops claviger (Roger) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) forms conspicuous mounds within clumps of big bluestem, Andropogon gerardii, and prairie dropseed, Sporobolus heterolepsis, within a re-created tallgrass prairie in northeastern Illinois. This study explored the ecology of the nesting ant in the recreated prairie regarding the persistence of colonies, soil characteristics, the growth of grass clumps, and the species richness of the surrounding flora. Persistence of nests over one year was positively correlated to the diameters of mounds created by the colonies. Differences in soil moisture at 10 cm depth were significant over a growing season between grass clumps having nests of A. claviger and those not. Soil temperature at 10 cm depth over a growing season, organic fraction of the soil, and above-ground oven-dried biomass of grasses did not significantly vary based on nest presence. Floral richness was significantly higher in the vicinity of A. claviger nests than where nests were absent. Benefits of the ant-grass relationship are unknown, although a commensalistic relationship is at least suggested by the location of nests in grass clumps. The presence of A. claviger nests appears to have a positive effect on the richness of the surrounding flora, possibly through soil tunneling and seed distribution

Compassion in the Bhutanese Gross National Happiness (GNH) infused classrooms

There is a growing interest in research on the role of compassion in the fields of positive psychology and social psychology. Compassion in the educational setting is focused on well-being and relationship-based approaches to support students to flourish academically, emotionally and socially. This paper is a review of compassion in the literature and provides a foreground of future research on compassion in the Bhutanese classroom. It also presents a discussion on compassion in relation to benefits for self and others, compassion fatigue and self-compassion. More importantly, this paper provides a deeper understanding of the role of compassion in education in building the teaching-learning process and foregrounds the need for further investigation into compassionate teaching and learning for a range of school-based curriculum subjects

Strategic placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for cardiac arrests in public locations and private residences

Aim: The aim of our study was to determine whether businesses can be identified that rank highly for their potential to improve coverage of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) by automated external defibrillators (AEDs), both in public locations and private residences. Methods: The cohort comprised 10,422 non-traumatic OHCAs from 2014 to 2020 in Perth, Western Australia. We ranked 115 business brands (across 5,006 facilities) for their potential to supplement coverage by the 3,068 registered public-access AEDs in Perth, while accounting for AED access hours. Results: Registered public-access AEDs provided 100 m coverage of 23% of public-location arrests, and 4% of arrests in private residences. Of the 10 business brands ranked highest for increasing the coverage of public OHCAs, six brands were ranked in the top 10 for increased coverage of OHCAs in private residences. A public phone brand stood out clearly as the highest-ranked of all brands, with more than double the coverage-increase of the second-ranked brand. If all 115 business brands hosted AEDs with 24–7 access, 57% of OHCAs would remain without 100 m coverage for public arrests, and 92% without 100 m coverage for arrests in private residences. Conclusion: Many businesses that ranked highly for increased coverage of arrests in public locations also rank well for increasing coverage of arrests in private residences. However, even if the business landscape was highly saturated with AEDs, large gaps in coverage of OHCAs would remain, highlighting the importance of considering other modes of AED delivery in metropolitan landscapes
