El aprendizaje de la variación lingüística en la enseñanza del español como L2. Aproximación a la situación de Canadá

    Get PDF
The interest in studying Spanish as a foreign language has increased in the last years and, as a result, has stimulated a lot of attention with respect to learning methods, which insist on the importance of students’ awareness of language variations (geographical, social and communicative). The situation in Canada offers an enormous research potential, especially regarding geographic modalities. The diversity of the teaching staff, mainly Latin-Americans, together with the fact that most of the textbooks used in class are produced in the United States favor an education based more on this style of speaking rather than on the peninsular style, with the great heterogeneity that this entails. This study is intended to analyze how some of these books address the different linguistic modalities as well as the language levels that are more affected by these variations. The study is based on an analysis of a series of textbooks used by Englishspeaking students in Canada of a high-intermediate level that follow the Spanish program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver

A quantitative study of disfluencies in formal, informal and media spontaneous speech in Spanish

Proceedings of IberSpeech 2012 (Madrid, Spain)A descriptive study of the prevalence of different types of disfluencies (fragmented words, restarts and vocalic supports) in spontaneous Spanish is presented based on a hand-annotated corpus. A quantitative account of differences among three types of registers (formal, informal and media) and several subtypes of text for each register is provided to analyze the importance of each disfluency class for a given register

Etiquetador automático de Marcadores Discursivos mediante Transformers

    Get PDF
We present an automatic discourse particle (DM) tagger developed using manual annotation and machine learning. The tagger has been developed on a dataset of financial letters, where human annotators have reached an 0.897 agreement rate (IAA) on the indications of a specific annotation guide. With the annotated dataset, a prototype has been developed using the pre-trained Transformers, adapting it to the task (fine-tunning), reaching an F1-score of 0.933. An evaluation of the results obtained by the tagger is included.Presentamos un etiquetador automático de partículas discursivas (DM) desarrollado mediante etiquetado manual y aprendizaje automático. Medical term formation in English and Japanese: A study of the suffixes -gram, -graph and -graphy

This paper presents a translingual study of medical lexicology in English and Japanese that compares the meaning and usage of three suffixes often found in medical discourse: -gram, -graph and -graphy. By means of an in-depth observation of frequency counts and semantic profiling in actual usage, we present a proposal regarding which roots each of the suffixes allow, together with an analysis of the meaning subtleties of the affixes. This work, informed by both cognitive and corpus linguistics, advances the presence of a concurrent pattern in English-Japanese morphology within medical discourse. After presenting a number of parallelisms and differences within the corpora, the work concludes with an explanation of how and why the three suffixes under inspection display quite distinct meaning nuances that restrain them from being used at random, both in English and in JapaneseThis research has been funded by the MINECO (under the grant TIN2010- 20644-C03-03) and by the Madrid Regional Government (grant MA2VICMR

    Spanish Inflectional Morphology in DATR

This paper shows a full description of Spanish inflectional morphology. We have chosen a paradigmatic approach instead of one based on phonological/spelling changes, i.e., the typical two-level model. Such morphological description has been written in the DATR formalism. The result is a network of nodes that makes use of the information inheritance mechanisms – orthogonal node inheritance and default path inheritance – that DATR allows. Some lexical coverage and corpus occurrence figures that support our approach are also given
