    Grandi progetti e competizione tra città: Una reflessione sui criteri di valorazione

    In this article is studied the competitivity among cities in relation with the big projects of urban transformation, developed in some European cities during the last years. The only purposes of these big projects are to get a better quality of life and the first posilions in the competiton among the urban centres. In that way, Corinna Morandi analizes the results of two investigations directed to value the competitive advantages of severa! euopean cities and the success of severa! recent big urban projects. Both investigations are studied from a critic attitude, which connect the main and minor success of the actived process with the positive or negative effects produced in the different categories of city users and in the hall urban system The article is closed with a revision of so me of the big urban projects that were done in Milano in the last 20 years using the same scheme of the mentioned investigations.En este artículo la cuestión de la competitividad entre ciudades es estudiada en relación al papel desempeñado por los grandes proyectos de transformación urbana, desarrollados durante los últimos años en algunas ci udades europeas, a la hora de mejorar tanto la calidad y eficacia de éstas como su posicionamiento competitivo fre nte a otros centros urbanos.Para ello se analizan los resultados de dos investigaciones orientadas a valorar respectivamente, las ventajas competitivas de varias ciudades europeas y el éxito de algunos recientes grandes proyectos urbanos. Ambas investigaciones se plantean desde una actitud crítica, capaz de relacionar el mayor o menor éxito de los procesos activados, con los efectos, positivos o negativos, producidos tanto sobre las diferentes categorías de usuarios de la ciudad como sobre todo el sistema urbano. Finalmente, utilizando el mismo método de análisis, se realiza una revisión de algunos de los grandes proyectos urbanos milaneses de los últimos 20 años

    Il commercio nei programmi di riqualificazione urbana a Milano

    Retail has always been considered an important sector of the Milan economy, but its strategical role in recent urban transformations has been rarely taken in account.Until the half of the 80s, when millions of square metres of brownfields have appeared in the real estate market, only few shopping malls or great supermarkets existed in Milan, whilst most of the great commercial implantations had been located in the outskirts and in the metropolitan area, often along the main radial roads and infrastructural nodes. The possibility of realizing transformation projects introducing new urban functions, among them large commercial sites, in the brownfields, facilitaded by specific national and regional Acts, has rapidly changed the model of retail settlements in Milan. Not all the projects have been successfull, both on the point of view of urban design and of the enhancing of the urban sector in which they were located and on the point of view of the commercial impact.El comercio siempre se ha considerado un sector importante en la economía de Milán, pero su papel estratégico en las transformaciones urbanas recientes se ha tenido poco en cuenta.Hasta la mitad de los años 80, cuando millones de metros cuadrados de zonas ferroviarias o industriales aparecieron en el mercado, solo unos pocos centros comerciales y grandes superficies existían en Milán, la mayoría localizadas en la periferia y en el área metropolitana, a menudo a lo largo de rondas y vias de acceso principales. La posibilidad de realizar proyectos de transformación introduciendo nuevas funciones urbanas, entre éstas la de los grandes centros comerciales, gracias al apoyo del gobierno nacional y regional, ha cambiado rapidamente el modelo de los asentamientos comerciales en Milán. No todos los proyectos han resultado ser satisfactorios, desde el punto de vista del diseño urbano y mejoras de su implantación y desde el punto de vista del impacto comercial

    Digital services for an internet of places: urban digital nodes for a smart region between Milan and Turin

    This paper presents the outcomes of a three-year research project developed by the Politecnico di Milano, Dipartimento di Architettura e Studi Urbani (DAStU), in collaboration with Telecom Italia. Looking at territorial smartness from a spatial perspective, that leaves aside the purely technological aspects, the research aims at exploring different ICT potentialities: from new uses of space, to socio-economic and physical regeneration. With this goal, it reflects about the possible updating of concepts, which are widely used in urban planning: (i) from smart city to smart region, to deal with the regional scale of contemporary cities, thus including peripheral and marginal ‘in-between’ spaces; (ii) from urban nodes to urban digital nodes, to design multi-scalar smart spaces able to integrate traditional and digital services; (iii) from Internet of Things to Internet of Places, to make spaces able to interact through (at the same time) real and virtual experiences of users. These theoretical references are explored within the scenario of the metropolitan region between Milan and Turin. According to these issues, this paper presents the research process to the UDN localization along the infrastructural bundle between Milan and Turin: from the identification of urban/infrastructural nodes, to the selection of potential Urban Digital Nodes. Furthermore, it highlights the UDN contribution to a smart region development through the spatial implementation of an Internet of Places

    A territorial role for superplaces?

    ENG: Over the last three decades, the metropolisation process of the contemporary city produced a number of new figures in the European territory. This paper focuses on superplaces: well-connected spaces - often located out of the consolidated city - where several central functions co-exist. Studying the case of Orio al Serio Airport (Italy) the authors describe the key features of superplaces and their territorial role. IT: Il processo di metropolizzazione che ha investito la cittá contemporanea europea negli ultimi trent’anni ha originato figure nuove nel territorio. In questo articolo gli autori si concentrano su alcuni ambiti - i “superluoghi” - localizzati in aree estremamente accessibili - spesso fuori dai nuclei urbani consolidati - dove coesistono diverse funzioni centrali.     En este artículo presentamos la investigación "Evaluación del impacto territorial de los polos comerciales: factoty outlets, multicines, centros comerciales. Una aproximación interregional", realizada entre 2005 y 2007 por los Departamentos de Architettura e Pianificazione del Politécnico de Milán, el Interateneo del Territorio del Politécnico de Turín y el Departamento de Economía de la Universidad de Parma. La investigación ha sido promovida por las Regiones de Lombardía, Piamonte y Emilia Romagna, con el fin de desarrollar un enfoque común tanto para el estudio de los fenómenos como para el desarrollo de directrices de gestión.
