String effects and the distribution of the glue in mesons at finite temperature
The distribution of the gluon action density in mesonic systems is
investigated at finite temperature. The simulations are performed in quenched
QCD for two temperatures below the deconfinment phase. Unlike the gluonic
profiles displayed at T=0, the action density iso-surfaces display a
prolate-spheroid like shape. The curved width profile of the flux-tube is found
to be consistent with the prediction of the free Bosonic string model at large

A method for determining landing runway length for a STOL aircraft
Based on data obtained from flight tests of the augmentor wing jet STOL research aircraft, a method is proposed for determining the length of the landing runway for powered-lift STOL aircraft. The suggested method determines runway landing length by summing three segments: the touchdown-dispersion distance, the transition distance from touchdown to application of brakes, and the stopping distance after brakes are applied. It is shown how the landing field length can be reduced either through improved autoland system design or by providing the pilot with appropriate information to allow him to identify a "low probability" long or short landing and to execute a go-around. The proposed method appears to determine a safe runway landing length for the STOL application and offers the potential for reducing runway length if great emphasis is placed on a short-runway capability. FAR Parts 25 and 121 appear conservative and suitable for the situation where no great emphasis is placed on reducing the runway length requirement

Extremality of Gaussian quantum states
We investigate Gaussian quantum states in view of their exceptional role
within the space of all continuous variables states. A general method for
deriving extremality results is provided and applied to entanglement measures,
secret key distillation and the classical capacity of Bosonic quantum channels.
We prove that for every given covariance matrix the distillable secret key rate
and the entanglement, if measured appropriately, are minimized by Gaussian
states. This result leads to a clearer picture of the validity of frequently
made Gaussian approximations. Moreover, it implies that Gaussian encodings are
optimal for the transmission of classical information through Bosonic channels,
if the capacity is additive.Comment: 4 page
Thermodynamic entropy production fluctuation in a two dimensional shear flow model
We investigate fluctuations in the momentum flux across a surface
perpendicular to the velocity gradient in a stationary shear flow maintained by
either thermostated deterministic or by stochastic boundary conditions. In the
deterministic system the Gallavotti-Cohen (GC)relation for the probability of
large deviations, which holds for the phase space volume contraction giving the
Gibbs ensemble entropy production, never seems to hold for the flux which gives
the hydrodynamic entropy production. In the stochastic case the GC relation is
found to hold for the total flux, as predicted by extensions of the GC theorem
but not for the flux across part of the surface. The latter appear to satisfy a
modified GC relation. Similar results are obtained for the heat flux in a
steady state produced by stochastic boundaries at different temperatures.Comment: 9 postscript figure
Overcoming Language Dichotomies: Toward Effective Program Comprehension for Mobile App Development
Mobile devices and platforms have become an established target for modern
software developers due to performant hardware and a large and growing user
base numbering in the billions. Despite their popularity, the software
development process for mobile apps comes with a set of unique, domain-specific
challenges rooted in program comprehension. Many of these challenges stem from
developer difficulties in reasoning about different representations of a
program, a phenomenon we define as a "language dichotomy". In this paper, we
reflect upon the various language dichotomies that contribute to open problems
in program comprehension and development for mobile apps. Furthermore, to help
guide the research community towards effective solutions for these problems, we

Distant X-ray Galaxies: Insights from the Local Population
A full understanding of the origin of the hard X-ray background requires a
complete and accurate census of the distant galaxies that produce it.
Unfortunately, distant X-ray galaxies tend to be very faint at all wavelengths,
which hinders efforts to perform this census. This chapter discusses the
insights that can be obtained through comparison of the distant population to
local X-ray galaxies, whose properties are well characterized. Such comparisons
will ultimately aid investigations into the cosmic evolution of supermassive
