    Estudios genéticos poblacionales en el complejo Mimosa bifurca (Fabaceae / Leguminosae)

    PosterMimosa bifurca Benth se distribuye en el Sur de Sudamérica (Paraguay, Uruguay, Noreste de Argentina y Sur de Brasil). Esta especie forma un complejo taxonómico diploide con especies afines mostrando alta variación morfológica y evidencias de hibridación homoploide. Se caracteriza por la presencia de flores rosadas en amplios racimos y tallos inermes, y posee potencial ornamental. Con el fin de brindar herramientas para su conservación, se analizó la variabilidad genética de 124 individuos de 10 poblaciones de su distribución natural. Se utilizaron ocho marcadores SSR (Single Sequence Repeat), seis específicos para M. bifurca y dos transferidos de M. tandilensis y M. ramulosa. Los productos amplificados se visualizaron a partir de corridas electroforéticas en geles de poliacrilamida. Como resultados preliminares, se observó que M. bifurca y M. sobralii formaron grupos genéticos diferenciados; el resto de las especies y poblaciones del complejo presentaron mezclas de grupos genéticos, sugiriendo hibridación homoploide. La diversidad genética fue moderada con una heterocigosidad observada de 0,42, se observó endogamia en varias poblaciones y el flujo génico histórico estimado fue bajo (Nm=0,5), sugiriendo procesos de deriva.     Potential Drivers of Mid-Infrared Variability in Young Stars: Testing Physical Models with Multiepoch Near-Infrared Spectra of YSOs in ρ Oph

    Recent studies have identified several young stellar objects (YSOs) which exhibit significant mid-infrared (mid-IR) variability. A wide range of physical mechanisms may be responsible for these variations, including changes in a YSO’s accretion rate or in the extinction or emission from the inner disk. We have obtained and analyzed multiepoch near-infrared (NIR) spectra for five actively accreting YSOs in the ρ Oph star-forming region along with contemporaneous mid-IR light curves obtained as part of the YSOVAR Spitzer/IRAC survey. Four of the five YSOs exhibit mid-IR light curves with modest (∼0.2–0.4 mag) but statistically significant variations over our 40-day observation window. Measuring the strengths of prominent photospheric absorption lines and accretion sensitive H I and He I lines in each NIR spectrum, we derive estimates of each YSO’s spectral type, effective temperature (T_eff), and H-band extinction (A_H), and analyze the time evolution of their NIR veiling (r_H and r_K) and mass accretion rates (Ṁ_acc). Defining a YSO’s evolutionary stage such that heavily veiled, high accretion rate objects are less evolved than those with lower levels of veiling and ongoing accretion, we infer that GY 314 is the most evolved YSO in our sample, with GY 308 and GY 292 at progressively earlier evolutionary stages. Leveraging our multiepoch, multiwavelength dataset, we detect significant variations in mass accretion rates over timescales of days to weeks, but find that extinction levels in these YSOs remain relatively constant. We find no correlation between these YSO mid-IR light curves and time-resolved veiling or mass accretion rates, such that we are unable to link their mid-IR variability with physical processes localized near the inner edge of the circumstellar disk or within regions which are directly responsive to mass accretion. We do find, however, that redshifted He I λ10830 emission, where present in our spectra, shows both quantitative and qualitative temporal correlations with accretion-sensitive H I emission lines. Blueshifted He I absorption, on the other hand, does not demonstrate a similar correlation, although the time-averaged strength of this blueshifted absorption is correlated with the time-averaged accretion rate in our sample of YSOs

    Infection in humans by the intestinal protozoan of cockroaches and termites called Lophomonas blattarum has been diagnosed in respiratory infections of children aged 2–5 years contaminated orally or by air, with cysts or trophozoites contained in the feces of the cockroach Periplaneta americana. In respiratory infections of adults, it is difficult to diagnose since the cyst or trophozoite is not recognized as a human pathogen and is only related to immunosuppressed patients, transplant patients with severe lung disease and those living in poor and unhealthy sanitary conditions. Normally, its presence is manifested with fevers of 38–39°C, cough with thick expectoration, respiratory insufficiency and pulmonary abscesses. The laboratory diagnosis is mainly based on bronchoscopic cytologies and bronchoalveolar lavage biopsies. The case in question is about a 60-year-old male. Single, he lives alone, with a diagnosis of 9 baths behind non-Hodgkin lymphoma, undergoing treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. For edema after treatment, thoracentesis and pericardiocentesis were performed, as well as gastrostomy, which he maintained for 1 year. He started with throat discomfort, followed by production of productive cough without blood, general weakness, and difficulty breathing, with apparent diagnosis of possible respiratory failure due to mycobacteria. It was possible to visualize the protozoan, in fresh preparations of bronchial aspirate and expectoration in wet assembly with saline solution and stained with Pap smears, Harris Hematoxylin and Eosin (H/E), and Giemsa

    A Wear Analysis Carried On Connecting Rod Bearings From Internal Combustion Engines

    In the present work, an analysis was carried out to know the wear modes present in connecting rod bearings from internal combustion engines. These mechanical elements were selected since they are exposed to different engineering failures such as incorrect assembly, severe loads, extreme temperatures, inadequate conditions, and loss of lubricity. In this particular case, the bearings that were selected had a service life of approximately 8 years. Different techniques such as SEM and optical microscopy, EDS analysis, hardness testing, and surface profilometry were used to characterize the unworn and worn bearings. Wear mechanisms such as sliding wear (scoring), fatigue wear with cracks where torn out material was clearly observed, discoloration areas, and two- and three-body abrasion wear (rubbing marks) were identified on the bearing surfaces

    Ebola Preparedness and Risk in Latin America

    Until today, February 22, 2016, no confirmed Ebola cases have been diagnosed in Americas (except USA, four cases with one death). Confusion, lack of knowledge, and fear have led to quickly misclassify cases as suspected, when in fact most of them are false alarms. Nevertheless, European governments summoned to mobilize resources to attend the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. And also Latin American governments should contribute to halt this humanitarian crisis and to be prepared for the potential arrival of this deadly virus in the Caribbean, Central, and South American mainland.     Gallstones, Body Mass Index, C-Reactive Protein, and Gallbladder Cancer: Mendelian Randomization Analysis of Chilean and European Genotype Data

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is a neglected disease with substantial geographical variability: Chile shows the highest incidence worldwide, while GBC is relatively rare in Europe. Here, we investigate the causal effects of risk factors considered in current GBC prevention programs as well as C-reactive protein (CRP) level as a marker of chronic inflammation. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We applied two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) using publicly available data and our own data from a retrospective Chilean and a prospective European study. Causality was assessed by inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger regression, and weighted median estimates complemented with sensitivity analyses on potential heterogeneity and pleiotropy, two-step MR, and mediation analysis. We found evidence for a causal effect of gallstone disease on GBC risk in Chileans (P = 9 × 10−5) and Europeans (P = 9 × 10−5). A genetically elevated body mass index (BMI) increased GBC risk in Chileans (P = 0.03), while higher CRP concentrations increased GBC risk in Europeans (P = 4.1 × 10−6). European results suggest causal effects of BMI on gallstone disease (P = 0.008); public Chilean data were not, however, available to enable assessment of the mediation effects among causal GBC risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Two risk factors considered in the current Chilean program for GBC prevention are causally linked to GBC risk: gallstones and BMI.
