Topological defects in 1D elastic waves

It has been recently shown theoretically that a topological defect in a 1D periodic potential may give rise to two localized states within the energy gaps. In this work we present an experimental realization of this effect for the case of torsional waves in elastic rods. We also show numerically that three, or even more, localized states can be present if the parameters characterizing the topological defect are suitably varied.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, accepted in Physica

This themed issue of Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment ‘SEG-2015-Part II’, presents papers selected from extended abstracts submitted to the Symposium on Energy Geotechnics (SEG-2015) held in the Civil Engineering School of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, between June 2nd and 4th, 2015. This symposium SEG-2015 was the first event organized by the Technical Committee TC308 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, which will have continuity in the next symposium SEG-2018 to be held in the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Lausanne, Switzerland). The first issue ‘SEG-2015-Part I’ appeared just before the 1st International Conference on Energy Geotechnics (ICEG-2016), which was held in Kiel (Germany) at the end of August 2016. The second volume ‘SEG-2015-Part II’ on December 2016 will thus close a first cycle of successful conferences and publications along this initial stage of TC308.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Recent insights into xerogel and aerogel mineral composites for CO 2 mineral sequestration

    Get PDF
Supercritically dried composites have already been analysed and proposed as carbon dioxide sequesters. However, the economical and energetic costs of the supercritical drying process had to be re-evaluated, and were eventually found not to enhance the feasibility of the proposed route for CO2 mineral sequestration. Different composites series were synthesised with the only difference being the drying method. The structures of the porous matrix were characterised as well as their ability to capture CO2. The first results showed that the xerogel matrix is as good a host as the aerogel one, and also avoids expensive procedures such as supercritical drying for sample preparation without losing CO2 capture capacity and enhancing the efficiency of the whole carbon sequestration process. In this case, the sample preparation was simplified as much as possible, with the aim of reducing energetic and economic costs. Although good carbonation efficiencies were obtained with these cheap samples, the first results showed that previous high carbonation efficiencies could not be repeated.Junta de Andalucía TEP115Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación PIA42008-3

Toeplitz operators, pseudo-homogeneous symbols and moment maps on the complex projective space

Following previous works for the unit ball, we define quasi-radial pseudo-homogeneous symbols on the projective space and obtain the corresponding commutativity results for Toeplitz operators. A geometric interpretation of these symbols in terms of moment maps is developed. This leads us to the introduction of a new family of symbols, extended pseudo-homogeneous, that provide larger commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators. This family of symbols provides new commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators on the unit ball
