Characteristics and origin of lunettes associated with La Lantejuela playa-lakes (Seville, Spain)
“Campiña” playa-lakes, originated in relation to clay-evaporite materials of Depression of the Guadalquivir, are characterized by their temporary hydroperiod and saline waters. Among these, it highlights the lacustrine complex of La Lantejuela, consisting of nine major playa-lakes and other smaller wetlands. Next to several playa-lakes, eight clay dunes with lunette morphology, heights of 5-19 meters and crests up to 4.6 km in length, are described. The origin of clay dunes is related to wetlands in arid regions, where clay-salt aggregates formed during dry season may be affected by aeolian erosion. Lunettes of La Lantejuela are located on the northern shore of playa-lakes, which is compatible with the current regime of winds, with stronger winds in summer from the southeast. Finally, it is concluded the complex origin of the playa-lakes of La Lantejuela, related to tectonic processes and, as is revealed in this study, to wind deflation processesLas lagunas de campiña, originadas en relación con los materiales arcilloso-evaporíticos de la Depresión del Guadalquivir, se caracterizan por su carácter temporal y sus aguas salinas.
Preliminary analysis of the determining factors of karst springs temperature in Andalusia
de calor en la zona vadosaWater temperature in 40 springs that drain the most important
karst massifs in Andalusia is between 9.8 and 27.5 ° C; nevertheless,
75% of flow drained by these aquifers has a temperature from 12
to 18 ° C. Water temperature is similar to the mean environmental temperature (lapse rate of -0.49 °C/100m), although there are
small differences, often in the range of ± 3 ° C. It is observed that
springs located at higher elevations have colder waters than the environmental average, while springs that are at lower elevations, have
waters relatively warmer. These variations would be related to the
control exerted by different variables, such as geology, climate, the
degree of karstification of materials and the rate of recharge, on the
temperature of groundwater. Likewise, a preliminary thermal budget
has been established, which considers the main sources of heat in
the water and highlights the importance of air flow in heat transport

High activity of fluvial incision and slope processes in the valley of the Guadalentín River (Pozo Alcón, Jaén)
Estos procesos han trasladado grandes masas de materiales hasta el cauce fluvial, provocando modificaciones significativas en el trazado y, sobre todo, en el perfil longitudinal del ríoIn the Guadalentín River basin, it exists aprominent contrast between the upper part, which drains the prebetic limestone reliefs of the Pozo, Cabrilla and Castril mountain ranges, and the lower part, located in the Guadix-Baza Basin. In this sector, the river has excavated a valley of 200 to 300 meters deep in a glacis that corresponds to the infilling surface of the ancient endorheic Guadix-Baza basin. The age of the valley is younger than the recent capture (about 400 ka ago) of this endorheic basin by the fluvial network of the Guadalquivir River, which implies very high fluvial incision rates (probably more than 0.6 mm/year). Simultaneously, the slopes of the valley have been affected by extremely active hillside processes. The last major one occurred in 2014 and affected 4 ha of olive groves in Los Hondillos area. These processes have moved large masses of materials to the riverbed, causing significant changes in the river path and, above all, in its longitudinal profil
Hydrological changes around Los Tollos shallow lake (Cadiz-Seville, Spain) in the context of its restoration
of Lebrija (Cadiz-Seville) has been made, especially of its southern part,
where Los Tollos shallow lake is located. An open pit mine of fibrous clays in
the vicinity of the lake, as well as groundwater withdrawals to facilitate the
mining and supply for urban and agricultural use, produced significant impacts
on the natural hydrogeological functioning of the shallow lake. Such
impacts where mainly a general lowering of the water table in the area and
migration of saline water. The hydrogeological evolution of the area, after the
ending of the environmental pressures, shows both a general recovery in all
the aquifers of the GWB and a tendency for equilibrium. This recovery, although
positive, is still not enough to achieve a complete environmental
restoration of the lake, which is the main objective of the project in which this

We analyze the recent tectonic activity recorded in the Viar catchment (Betics foreland), combining structural and geomorphic tools. Our results indicate that recent, probably Quaternary, tectonic activity is responsible for relief segmentation, both parallel and perpendicular to the limit between the foreland of the Betics and the Guadalquivir foreland basin. Thus, uplift of the Viar catchment boundaries seems to be controlled by the presence of previous structures, reactivated as NW-SE oblique reverse faults at its NE boundary and oblique normal faults, close to E-W orientation, at its SW boundary. Additionally, SW-NE oblique normal faults are associated with the topographic escarpment that separates the Iberian Massif and the Guadalquivir foreland basin. They must have elevated the Iberian Massif before the subsidence of the Viar catchment occurred, given that the Neogene sediments of the Guadalquivir basin do not extend within the southernmost Viar catchment although its floor is at the same altitude as the Neogene outcrops in the northermost Guadalquivir basin. The contrasting kinematics accommodating relief rejuvenation point to the superposition of shortening, probably due to Alpine intraplate deformation, and extension related to forebulge flexio
Using Water Temperature, Electrical Conductivity, and pH to Characterize Surface¿Groundwater Relations in a Shallow Ponds System (Doñana National Park, SW Spain)
The physical limnology of a shallow pond system was characterized using field
measurements of water temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity (EC). We determined the spatial
variability in surface and groundwater temperature, pH, and EC along the pond¿s shore and along
the several pond-shore transects, analyzed the water column temperature gradient and estimated the
groundwater discharge rate using a heat transfer model. The fieldwork was conducted in Santa Olalla
and Dulce ponds located in Doñana National Park in southwestern Spain during different stages from
2016 to 2018. The results of this study have improved the understanding of the thermal structure and
the surface¿subsurface heat exchange in the ponds and highlighted the importance of groundwater
discharge in the pond water balance. It also showed the heterogeneous nature of groundwater
discharge through the bottom sediments of the Santa Olalla pond. These results are consistent with
previous studies and strengthen the existing hydrological and limnological knowledge of these ponds
located in the protected area which is receiving a great deal of public attention.UPOPostprin
Hydrological monitoring and characterization of the relation aquifer-pond in the sand dune ponds of Doñana
son, en su mayor parte, recarga o infiltración hacia el acuíferoIn this work, a hydrogeological study of a set of coastal ponds,
which are located in the Doñana Biological Reserve, has been carried
out. These ponds are situated on quasi-stabilized dune depressions
at different altitudes. Except for Santa Olalla pond, located at the
lowest altitude, the ponds are temporary or seasonal. The water
level evolution has been recorded with sensors installed in each of
the ponds. With these data, inputs, outputs and water level storages
have been quantified with a daily time-step during the period March
2016- September 2018. Moreover, surface water and groundwater
samples have been taken during the same period in order to determine
its hydrochemical facies. The water Balances revealed that
most of the ponds were flow-through type. However, groundwater
discharge is more important in some ponds than in others. Some
ponds are rainfall-dependent and a major fraction of water outputs
is groundwater recharge to the aquife
Geomorphologic analysis of the fluvial terraces of the Lower Guadalquivir River and tectonics implications
complex system of terraces, placed in the left margin of the river. The current
floodplain is placed in outlying position. The highest and most distant from
the current riverbed terraces are placed about 140 meters above the floodplain
and have been attributed to the Late Pleistocene. This position can be
explained by upward and tilting towards NW and N of the terrace system,
which would have provoked the migration of the Guadalquivir River during
Quaternary times. The evolution of the Low Guadalquivir fluvial system can
be related to the recent tectonic evolution of western Betics, since the river
course and the plan distribution of different terraces follow the structural
trend of Gibraltar Arch and the migration of the Betic deformation fron
Geomorphic signature of segmented relief rejuvenation in the Sierra Morena, Betic forebulge, Spain
The foreland relief of alpine orogenic belts is often rejuvenated due to the intraplate propagation of orogenic deformation. Thus, in these long-lived areas, the localisation of relief rejuvenation may be largely controlled by the reactivation of previous mechanical discontinuities. In this regard, we explored the relationship between the relief rejuvenation pattern and the distribution, geometry, and kinematics of faults in a wide segment of the Betic foreland (Sierra Morena, southern Spain). Specifically, we focused on the forebulge, a WSW–ENE flexural relief that formed, paired to the Betic foreland basin, in response to orogenic load. For this purpose, we applied both qualitative and quantitative geomorphological tools, including geomorphic indices and knickpoint pattern modelling in χ space. We found that the pattern of relief rejuvenation responds to large-scale flexural uplift coupled with the tectonic activity of two groups of faults that often show evidence of reactivation, namely overall WSW–ENE faults contributing to both regional NNW–SSE relief segmentation and vertical extrusion of the forebulge, and NW–SE reverse faults associated with an outstanding WSW–ENE topographic segmentation in the west of the study area. In addition, our knickpoint modelling suggests that the faults related to the southernmost Sierra Morena mountain front have been particularly active in recent times, although their activity span and the relative uplift that they accommodate differ along the Sierra Morena/foreland basin limit. The knickpoint pattern also suggests a significant reorganisation of the analysed drainage basins. The strain partitioning accommodated by the structures involved in relief rejuvenation suggests the intraplate propagation of the transpressional deformation reported from the Betic external fold and thrust belt.</p
