XMM-Newton EPIC and OM observation of Nova Centauri 1986 (V842 Cen)

We report the results from the temporal and spectral analysis of an XMM-Newton observation of Nova Centauri 1986 (V842 Cen). We detect a period at 3.51$\pm$0.4 h in the EPIC data and at 4.0$\pm$0.8 h in the OM data. The X-ray spectrum is consistent with the emission from an absorbed thin thermal plasma with a temperature distribution given by an isobaric cooling flow. The maximum temperature of the cooling flow model is $kT_{max}=43_{-12}^{+23}$ keV. Such a high temperature can be reached in a shocked region and, given the periodicity detected, most likely arises in a magnetically-channelled accretion flow characteristic of intermediate polars. The pulsed fraction of the 3.51 h modulation decreases with energy as observed in the X-ray light curves of magnetic CVs, possibly due either to occultation of the accretion column by the white dwarf body or phase-dependent to absorption. We do not find the 57 s white dwarf spin period, with a pulse amplitude of 4 mmag, reported by Woudt et al. (2009) either in the Optical Monitor (OM) data, which are sensitive to pulse amplitudes $\gtrsim$ 0.03 magnitudes, or the EPIC data, sensitive to pulse fractions $p \gtrsim$ 14 $\pm$2%.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; MNRAS, accepte

A first appraisal of the landing and mechanism of the Santos fishery

This paper summarizes and analyses the landing data collected at Santos, Brazil, during the 12 months period, July 1958-June 1959. These data are given in terms of weight landed of the more important fish and shrimp and also in terms of value. The distribution of the landings of each of the more important species is shown both according to the type of fishing gear used and fishing area. The fishing area is given in the form of statistical rectangles of 60 miles square. The landings are broken down to obtain a figure for the landing per hour of fishing for each species, for each gear and for each rectangle fished. This figure of landing per unit fishing time is used to compare one area with another, one gear with another, and one month with another for each of the important species. In this way, comparisons of the available density of a species by time, area and fishing gear are made.Êste trabalho sintetiza e analisa os dados coletados em Santos, Brasil, sobre o desembarque de pescado durante o período de 12 meses, de julho de 1958 a junho de 1959. Estes dados são apresentados em termos de peso desembarcado, para as espécies de peixes mais importantes e camarões e, também, em termos de valor econômico. A distribuição dos desembarques de cada uma das espécies mais importantes é apresentada tanto em relação ao tipo de aparelho de pesca usado, como em relação à área de pesca. Essa área é dada sob forma de retângulos estatísticos de 60 milhas quadradas. Os desembarques são classificados para se obter o valor do desembarque por hora de pesca para cada espécie, para cada aparelho e para cada retângulo pescado. Dilute-phase pneumatic conveying of polystyrene particles: pressure drop curve and particle distribution over the pipe cross-section

During the pneumatic conveying of plastic pellets, it has been observed that materials with similar physical characteristics may develop a substantial difference in pressure drop. In this work, the pressure drop in a particle-laden 2.7 meter long horizontal channel with circular cross-section is presented from an experimental perspective. Experiments are carried out for cylindrical polystyrene beads with an average diameter of 3.2 mm and mass loadings of 0.06 to 0.11 (kg particles/kg gas). The air mass flow rate was studied in the range from 0.085 kg/s to 0.170 kg/s. The pressure drop curve is shown as a function of air velocity and particle load. Determinant Factors of Morbidity in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Introdução: O lúpus eritematoso sistémico pode apresentar uma gravidade variável. Contudo, não existem biomarcadores que preveem o curso da doença. O dano é medido pelo índice Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/Systemic Damage Index que define a gravidade e prevê o seu prognóstico. Objetivo: Avaliação dos fatores que determinam dano nos doentes com lúpus eritematoso sistémico. Material e Métodos: Estudo retrospetivo, monocêntrico, em doentes com lúpus eritematoso sistémico (≥ 4 critérios do American College of Rheumatology – 100% dos doentes, n = 76), do sexo feminino, seguidos por um período ≥ 5 anos. Início da doença, etnia, duração, número de critérios American College of Rheumatology no final do seguimento, fenótipo renal, neuropsiquiátrico (e articular, co-morbilidades e Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index -2K foram correlacionados com a presença e grau de dano medido pelo índice Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/Systemic Damage Index. A acumulação de critérios American College of Rheumatology foi objetivada num sub-grupo de doentes seguidos desde o início. A análise estatística utilizou o qui-quadrado, Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney e a correlação de Spearman (p < 0,05). Resultados: O Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics Index era superior a 0 em 56,5% dos doentes. Estes doentes tinham um maior tempo de doença, um maior número de critérios American College of Rheumatology e um fenótipo neuropsiquiátrico, quando comparados com doentes sem dano (p < 0,05). Verificou-se uma correlação positiva entre o valor numérico de critérios American College of Rheumatology acumulados no final do seguimento e a atividade da doença nos últimos cinco anos (Spearman rho 0,02 e p < 0,05). Não se verificaram diferenças em relação às outras variáveis. Discussão e Conclusão: A duração da doença e o número de critérios do American College of Rheumatology acumulados conseguem prever a presença de dano. The pasta phase within density dependent hadronic models

In the present paper we investigate the onset of the pasta phase with different parametrisations of the density dependent hadronic model and compare the results with one of the usual parametrisation of the non-linear Walecka model. The influence of the scalar-isovector virtual delta meson is shown. At zero temperature two different methods are used, one based on coexistent phases and the other on the Thomas-Fermi approximation. At finite temperature only the coexistence phases method is used. npe matter with fixed proton fractions and in beta-equilibrium are studied. We compare our results with restrictions imposed on the the values of the density and pressure at the inner edge of the crust, obtained from observations of the Vela pulsar and recent isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion reactions, and with predictions from spinodal calculations.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures and 7 table
