Physical and chemical characteristics of minimally processed strawberries stored under refrigeration and controled atmospheres

Strawberries cv. Oso Grande were minimally processed and kept in three different atmospheres: 3% O-2 + 10% CO2 (N-2 balance), 3% O-2 + 15% CO2 (N-2 balance) and ambient atmosphere (control), at 5 and 10 degrees C, during, 7 days, with the evaluation of their physical and chemical characteristics during storage. Fruits were evaluated at 0, 3 and 7 days for weight loss, firmness, pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids, sugar content (sucrose, fructose and glucose) and total anthocyanins. Data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were compared by the Least Significance Difference (LSD) test (5%). It was verified that shifting the temperature from 5 to 10 degrees C had no significant effect on the physical and chemical variables analyzed. The utilization of atmospheres 3% 0, + 10% CO2 and 3% O-2+ 15% CO2 was important for quality maintenance of fresh-cut strawberries. They better preserved firmness in relation to ambient atmosphere, and had a positive effect on the control of fruit weight loss. However, fresh-cut fruits kept under those atmospheres showed a lower content of anthocyanins when compared to fruits stored in ambient conditions.28227428

Sqrt{shat}_{min} resurrected

We discuss the use of the variable sqrt{shat}_{min}, which has been proposed in order to measure the hard scale of a multi parton final state event using inclusive quantities only, on a SUSY data sample for a 14 TeV LHC. In its original version, where this variable was proposed on calorimeter level, the direct correlation to the hard scattering scale does not survive when effects from soft physics are taken into account. We here show that when using reconstructed objects instead of calorimeter energy and momenta as input, we manage to actually recover this correlation for the parameter point considered here. We furthermore discuss the effect of including W + jets and t tbar+jets background in our analysis and the use of sqrt{shat}_{min} for the suppression of SM induced background in new physics searches.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures; v2: 1 figure, several subsections and references as well as new author affiliation added. Relationship between vigorous physical activity and health care costs among adolescents: ABCD Growth Study

Background: The relationship between physical activity and health care costs among adolescents is not yet clear in the literature. Objective: To analyze the relationship between physical activity and annual health care costs among adolescents. Methods: The present sample was composed of 85 adolescents of both sexes with ages ranging from 11 to 18 years (mean age 15.6 ± 2.1). Health care costs were self‐reported every month for 12 months, and information on health care values was verified with local pharmacies, private health care plans, and the National Health Service. The time spent in different physical activity intensities was objectively measured by accelerometers. Confounding variables were: sex, age, somatic maturation, body fatness, blood pressure, and components of dyslipidemia and insulin resist‐ ance. Multivariate models were generated using generalized linear models with gamma distribution and a log‐link function. Results: The overall annual health care cost was US$733.60/ R$ 2,342.38 (medication: US$400.46 / R$ 1,278.66; primary and secondary care: US$333.14 / R$ 1,063.70). The time spent in vigorous physical activity (minutes/day) was negatively related to health care costs (r = ‐0.342 [95% CI: ‐0.537,—0.139]; β = ‐0.06 cents (95% CI: ‐0.089, ‐0.031). Assessment of the genotoxic impact of pesticides on farming communities in the countryside of Santa Catarina State, Brazil

The aim of this study was to assess the use of pesticides on farms located in the Lambedor River watershed in Guatambu, State of Santa Catarina, as well as to determine, by micronucleus testing, the risk of genotoxic impact. Samples from locally collected Cyprinus carpio, Hypostomus punctatus, Rhamdia quelen and Oreochromis niloticus gave evidence of a mean increase in micronuclei frequency from 6.21 to 13.78 in 1,000 erythrocytes, a clear indication of the genotoxic potenciality of pesticide residues in regional dams, and their significant contribution to local environmental contamination
