Intersection between class and gender and its effect on the quality of employment in Chile

del empleo en Chile. La medida de posición de clase utilizada está basada en la propuesta de
Erik O. Wright y la calidad del empleo en una medida multidimensional, que incluye un índice
de condiciones objetivas de empleo y dos índices de condiciones subjetivas (motivación en
el trabajo y percepción del control sobre el proceso de trabajo). Los resultados demuestran
que la clase y el género determinan diferencias significativas en la calidad objetiva y subjetiva
del empleo. Sin embargo, los datos también indican que el género (particularmente, el
hecho de ser mujer) no actúa necesariamente como “amplificador” de las desigualdades
de clase observadas en el mercado laboral. A partir de esto, al final del artículo se plantean
algunas reflexiones sobre cómo opera la intersección entre clase y género en el mercado
laboral chileno.This study explores the impact of the intersection between class and gender on the quality
of employment in Chile. The method used to measure social class position is based on the
work of Erik O. Wright, while, for the quality of employment, a multidimensional measurement
was used, including one index for objective working conditions and two indices for subjective
ones (motivation on the job and the perception of control over work processes). The results
demonstrate that class and gender give rise to signifcant differences in objective and
subjective job quality. However, the data also indicate that gender (more specifcally, the fact
of being female) does not necessarily amplify the class-based inequalities observed in the
labour market. Drawing on these fndings, a number of thoughts about how the class/gender

Effectively four-dimensional spacetimes emerging from d=5 Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in five-dimensional spacetime provides an
excellent example of a theory that, while including higher-order curvature
corrections to General Relativity, still shares many of its features, such as
second-order field equations for the metric. We focus on the largely unexplored
case where the coupling constants of the theory are such that no
constant-curvature solution is allowed, leaving open the question of what the
vacuum state should then be. We find that even a slight deviation from the
anti-de Sitter Chern-Simons theory, where the vacuum state is five-dimensional
AdS spacetime, leads to a complete symmetry breakdown, with the fifth dimension
either being compactified into a small circle or shrinking away exponentially
with time. A complete family of solutions, including duality relations among
them, is uncovered and shown to be unique within a certain class. This
dynamical dimensional reduction scenario seems particularly attractive as a
means for higher-dimensional theories to make contact with our four-dimensional

The loss of anisotropy in MgB2 with Sc substitution and its relationship with the critical temperature
The electrical conductivity anisotropy of the sigma-bands is calculated for
the (Mg,Sc)B2 system using a virtual crystal model. Our results reveal that
anisotropy drops with relatively little scandium content (< 30%); this
behaviour coincides with the lowering of Tc and the reduction of the Kohn
anomaly. This anisotropy loss is also found in the Al and C doped systems. In
this work it is argued that the anisotropy, or 2D character, of the sigma-bands
is an important parameter for the understanding of the high Tc found in MgB2
Kondo temperature of SU(4) symmetric quantum dots
A path integral approach is used to derive a closed analytical expression for
the Kondo temperature of the SU(4) symmetrical Anderson model. In contrast to
the SU(2) case, the prefactor of the Kondo temperature is found to display a
peculiar orbital-energy (gate voltage) dependence, reflecting the presence of
various SU(4) mixed valence fixed points. Our analytical expressions are
tested against and confirmed by numerical renormalization group computations
Regularization of odd-dimensional AdS gravity: Kounterterms
As an alternative to the Dirichlet counterterms prescription, I introduce the
concept of Kounterterms as the boundary terms with explicit dependence on the
extrinsic curvature K_{ij} that regularize the AdS gravity action. Instead of a
Dirichlet boundary condition on the metric, a suitable choice of the boundary
conditions --compatible with any asymptotically AdS (AAdS) spacetime-- ensures
a finite action principle for all odd dimensions. Background-independent
conserved quantities are obtained as Noether charges associated to asymptotic
symmetries and their general expression appears naturally split in two parts.
The first one gives the correct mass and angular momentum for AAdS black
holes and vanishes identically for globally AdS spacetimes. Thus, the second
part is a covariant formula for the vacuum energy in AAdS spacetimes and
reproduces the results obtained by the Dirichlet counterterms method in a
number of cases. It is also shown that this Kounterterms series regularizes the
Euclidean action and recovers the correct black hole thermodynamics in odd
