Realizing Hopf Insulators in Dipolar Spin Systems

    Get PDF
The Hopf insulator represents a topological state of matter that exists outside the conventional ten-fold way classification of topological insulators. Its topology is protected by a linking number invariant, which arises from the unique topology of knots in three dimensions. We predict that three-dimensional arrays of driven, dipolar-interacting spins are a natural platform to experimentally realize the Hopf insulator. In particular, we demonstrate that certain terms within the dipolar interaction elegantly generate the requisite non-trivial topology, and that Floquet engineering can be used to optimize dipolar Hopf insulators with large gaps. Moreover, we show that the Hopf insulator's unconventional topology gives rise to a rich spectrum of edge mode behaviors, which can be directly probed in experiments. Finally, we present a detailed blueprint for realizing the Hopf insulator in lattice-trapped ultracold dipolar molecules; focusing on the example of 40{}^{40}K87^{87}Rb, we provide quantitative evidence for near-term experimental feasibility.Comment: 6 + 7 pages, 3 figure

Expandable and Rapidly Differentiating Human Induced Neural Stem Cell Lines for Multiple Tissue Engineering Applications

Limited availability of human neurons poses a significant barrier to progress in biological and preclinical studies of the human nervous system. Current stem cell-based approaches of neuron generation are still hindered by prolonged culture requirements, protocol complexity, and variability in neuronal differentiation. Here we establish stable human induced neural stem cell (hiNSC) lines through the direct reprogramming of neonatal fibroblasts and adult adipose-derived stem cells. These hiNSCs can be passaged indefinitely and cryopreserved as colonies. Independently of media composition, hiNSCs robustly differentiate into TUJ1-positive neurons within 4 days, making them ideal for innervated co-cultures. In vivo, hiNSCs migrate, engraft, and contribute to both central and peripheral nervous systems. Lastly, we demonstrate utility of hiNSCs in a 3D human brain model. This method provides a valuable interdisciplinary tool that could be used to develop drug screening applications as well as patient-specific disease models related to disorders of innervation and the brain

Effect in supralethally irradiated rats of granulocyte colony- stimulating factor and lisofylline on hematopoietic reconstitution by syngeneic bone marrow or whole organ passenger leukocytes

We have previously shown the existence of migratory hematopoietic stem cells in adult solid organs. This study demonstrates that granulocyte colony- stimulating factor (G-CSF) and lisofylline, a phosphatidic acid inhibitor that suppresses hematopoiesis-inhibiting cytokines, can enhance the engraftment of organ-based hematopoietic stem cells. When syngeneic heart grafts or liver nonparenchymal cells were transplanted into lethally irradiated (9.5 Gy) Lewis rats, complete hematopoietic reconstitution and animal survival were significantly improved by treating the recipient with G- CSF or, to a lesser extent, with lisofylline. Pretreatment of hepatic nonparenchymal cell donors with G-CSF, but not lisofylline, also resulted in striking improvement of recipient survival which was associated with an augmented subpopulation of donor stem cells. The results suggest that these drugs can be used to enhance the chimerism that we postulate to be the basis of organ allograft acceptance

Validating the Comparison Framework for the Finite Dimensions Model of Concentric Ring Electrodes Using Human Electrocardiogram Data

[EN] While progress has been made in design optimization of concentric ring electrodes maximizing the accuracy of the surface Laplacian estimation, it was based exclusively on the negligible dimensions model of the electrode. Recent proof of concept of the new finite dimensions model that adds the radius of the central disc and the widths of concentric rings to the previously included number of rings and inter-ring distances provides an opportunity for more comprehensive design optimization. In this study, the aforementioned proof of concept was developed into a framework allowing direct comparison of any two concentric ring electrodes of the same size and with the same number of rings. The proposed framework is illustrated on constant and linearly increasing inter-ring distances tripolar concentric ring electrode configurations and validated on electrocardiograms from 20 human volunteers. In particular, ratios of truncation term coefficients between the two electrode configurations were used to demonstrate the similarity between the negligible and the finite dimension models analytically (p = 0.077). Laplacian estimates based on the two models were calculated on electrocardiogram data for emulation of linearly increasing inter-ring distances tripolar concentric ring electrode. The difference between the estimates was not statistically significant (p >> 0.05) which is consistent with the analytic result. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Human Resource Development (HRD) Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP), grants number 1622481 and 1914787 to Oleksandr Makeyev. Opinion Dynamics With Cross-Coupling Topics: Modeling and Analysis

    Get PDF
To model the cross couplings of multiple topics, we develop a set of rules for opinion updates of a group of agents. The rules are used to design or assign values to the elements of weighting matrices. The cooperative and anticooperative couplings are modeled in both the inverse-proportional and proportional structures. The behaviors of opinion dynamics are analyzed using a nullspace property of the state-dependent matrix-weighted Laplacian matrices and a Lyapunov candidate. Various consensus properties of the state-dependent matrix-weighted Laplacian matrices are predicted according to the interagent network topology and interdependent topical coupling topologies
