Psychosocial mediators of change in physical activity in the Welsh national exercise referral scheme: secondary analysis of a randomised controlled trial
Objective:
While an increasing number of randomised controlled trials report impacts of exercise referral schemes (ERS) on physical activity, few have investigated the mechanisms through which increases in physical activity are produced. This study examines whether a National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS) in Wales is associated with improvements in autonomous motivation, self-efficacy and social support, and whether change in physical activity is mediated by change in these psychosocial processes.

Methods:
A pragmatic randomised controlled trial of NERS across 12 LHBs in Wales. Questionnaires measured demographic data and physical activity at baseline. Participants (N = 2160) with depression, anxiety or CHD risk factors were referred by health professionals and randomly assigned to control or intervention. At six months psychological process measures were collected by questionnaire. At 12 months physical activity was assessed by 7 Day PAR telephone interview. Regressions tested intervention effects on psychosocial variables, physical activity before and after adjusting for mediators and socio demographic patterning.

Results:
Significant intervention effects were found for autonomous motivation and social support for exercise at 6 months. No intervention effect was observed for self-efficacy. The data are consistent with a hypothesis of partial mediation of the intervention effect by autonomous motivation. Analysis of moderators showed significant improvements in relative autonomy in all subgroups. The greatest improvements in autonomous motivation were observed among patients who were least active at baseline.

Discussion:
The present study offered key insights into psychosocial processes of change in an exercise referral scheme, with effects on physical activity mediated by autonomous motivation. Findings support the use of self-determination theory as a framework for ERS. Further research is required to explain socio-demographic patterning in responses to ERS, with changes in motivation occurring among all sub-groups of participants, though not always leading to higher adherence or behavioural change. This highlights the importance of socio-ecological approaches to developing and evaluating behaviour change interventions, which consider factors beyond the individual, including conditions in which improved motivation does or does not produce behavioural change

Application of redundancy in the Saturn 5 guidance and control system
The Saturn launch vehicle's guidance and control system is so complex that the reliability of a simplex system is not adequate to fulfill mission requirements. Thus, to achieve the desired reliability, redundancy encompassing a wide range of types and levels was employed. At one extreme, the lowest level, basic components (resistors, capacitors, relays, etc.) are employed in series, parallel, or quadruplex arrangements to insure continued system operation in the presence of possible failure conditions. At the other extreme, the highest level, complete subsystem duplication is provided so that a backup subsystem can be employed in case the primary system malfunctions. In between these two extremes, many other redundancy schemes and techniques are employed at various levels. Basic redundancy concepts are covered to gain insight into the advantages obtained with various techniques. Points and methods of application of these techniques are included. The theoretical gain in reliability resulting from redundancy is assessed and compared to a simplex system. Problems and limitations encountered in the practical application of redundancy are discussed as well as techniques verifying proper operation of the redundant channels. As background for the redundancy application discussion, a basic description of the guidance and control system is included
Evaluation criteria for commercially oriented materials processing in space proposals
An approach and criteria for evaluating NASA funded experiments and demonstrations which have commercial potential were developed. Methods for insuring quick initial screening of commercial proposals are presented. Recommendations are given for modifying the current evaluation approach. New criteria for evaluating commercially orientated materials processing in space (MPS) proposals are introduced. The process for selection of qualified individuals to evaluate the phases of this approach and criteria is considered and guidelines are set for its implementation
Wavefront shaping of a Bessel light field enhances light sheet microscopy with scattered light
The project was supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, RS MacDonald Charitable Trust, SULSA, and the St. Andrews 600th anniversary BRAINS appeal. K. D. is a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award holder.Light sheet microscopy has seen a resurgence as it facilitates rapid, high contrast, volumetric imaging with minimal sample exposure. Initially developed for imaging scattered light, this application of light sheet microscopy has largely been overlooked but provides an endogenous contrast mechanism which can complement fluorescence imaging and requires very little or no modification to an existing light sheet fluorescence microscope. Fluorescence imaging and scattered light imaging differ in terms of image formation. In the former the detected light is incoherent and weak whereas in the latter the coherence properties of the illumination source, typically a laser, dictate the coherence of detected light, but both are dependent on the quality of the illuminating light sheet. Image formation in both schemes can be understood as the convolution of the light sheet with the specimen distribution. In this paper we explore wavefront shaping for the enhancement of light sheet microscopy with scattered light. We show experimental verification of this result, demonstrating the use of the propagation invariant Bessel beam to extend the field of view of a high resolution scattered light, light sheet microscope and its application to imaging of biological super-cellular structures with sub-cellular resolution. Additionally, complementary scattering and fluorescence imaging is used to characterize the enhancement, and to develop a deeper understanding of the differences of image formation between contrast mechanisms in light sheet microscopy.Publisher PD
External stress-corrosion cracking of a 1.22-m-diameter type 316 stainless steel air valve
An investigation was conducted to determine the cause of the failure of a massive AISI Type 316 stainless steel valve which controlled combustion air to a jet engine test facility. Several through-the-wall cracks were present near welded joints in the valve skirt. The valve had been in outdoor service for 18 years. Samples were taken in the cracked regions for metallographic and chemical analyses. Insulating material and sources of water mist in the vicinity of the failed valve were analyzed for chlorides. A scanning electron microscope was used to determine whether foreign elements were present in a crack. On the basis of the information generated, the failure was characterized as external stress-corrosion cracking. The cracking resulted from a combination of residual tensile stress from welding and the presence of aqueous chlorides. Recommended countermeasures are included
