Induction of First-Order Decision Lists: Results on Learning the Past Tense of English Verbs
This paper presents a method for inducing logic programs from examples that
learns a new class of concepts called first-order decision lists, defined as
ordered lists of clauses each ending in a cut. The method, called FOIDL, is
based on FOIL (Quinlan, 1990) but employs intensional background knowledge and
avoids the need for explicit negative examples. It is particularly useful for
problems that involve rules with specific exceptions, such as learning the
past-tense of English verbs, a task widely studied in the context of the
symbolic/connectionist debate. FOIDL is able to learn concise, accurate
programs for this problem from significantly fewer examples than previous

Links Between Social Support, Thwarted Belongingness, and Suicide Ideation among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual College Students
Emerging adults with a lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) identity are at greater risk for engaging in suicide-related behaviors. This disparity highlights a need to elucidate specific risk and protective factors associated with suicide-related behaviors among LGB youth, which could be utilized as targets for suicide prevention efforts in this population. Informed by the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide, the present study hypothesized that social support would be indirectly associated with decreased suicide ideation via lower thwarted belongingness. A sample of 50 emerging adults (62.0% male, 70.0% Hispanic) who identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, questioning, or âotherâ orientation, with a mean age of 20.84 years (SD = 3.30 years), completed self-report assessments. Results indicated that support from both family and the LGB community were associated with lower thwarted belongingness over and above the effects of age, sex, and depressive symptoms. Indirect effects models also indicated that both family and LGB community support were associated with suicide ideation via thwarted belongingness. The results of the present study suggest that family and LGB community support may represent specific targets for reducing thwarted belongingness that could be leveraged in suicide prevention efforts for LGB emerging adults
Model based methodology development for energy recovery in ash heat exchange systems
Flash tank evaporation combined with a condensing heat exchanger can be used when heat exchange is required between two streams and where at least one of these streams is difficult to handle (in terms of solid particles content, viscosity, pH, consistency etc.). To increase the efficiency of heat exchange, a cascade of these units in series can be used. Heat transfer relationships in such a cascade are very complex due to their interconnectivity, thus the impact of any changes proposed is difficult to predict. In this report, a mathematical model of a single unit ash tank evaporator combined with a condensing heat exchanger unit is proposed. This model is then developed for a chain of the units. The purpose of this model is to allow an accurate evaluation of the effect and result of an alteration to the system. The resulting model

Photoluminescence rings in Corbino disk at quantizing magnetic fields
Spatially resolved photoluminescence of modulation doped AlGaAs/GaAs
heterojunction was investigated in a sample of Corbino disk geometry subject to
strong perpendicular magnetic fields. Significant spatial modulation of the
photoluminescence was observed in form of one or more concentric rings which
travelled across the sample when the magnetic field strength was varied. A
topology of the observed structure excludes the possibility of being a trace of
an external current. The effect is attributed to formation of compressible and

Spatial composition in the multi-channel domain: aesthetics and techniques
This paper outlines technical and aesthetic approaches to sound spatialisation for electroacoustic music composition. In particular, the paper discusses how spatialisation (sound diffusion) is used to realise specific musical objectives. Technological solutions to problems associated with adapting multichannel compositions for live spatialisation are explored, with particular reference to the open-source Resound system [2, 3]. Examples of Resound applications are provided to illustrate the potential of the system for controlling complex spatial behaviour during live performance
Statistical Mechanics of Semi-Supervised Clustering in Sparse Graphs
We theoretically study semi-supervised clustering in sparse graphs in the
presence of pairwise constraints on the cluster assignments of nodes. We focus
on bi-cluster graphs, and study the impact of semi-supervision for varying
constraint density and overlap between the clusters. Recent results for
unsupervised clustering in sparse graphs indicate that there is a critical
ratio of within-cluster and between-cluster connectivities below which clusters
cannot be recovered with better than random accuracy. The goal of this paper is
to examine the impact of pairwise constraints on the clustering accuracy. Our
results suggests that the addition of constraints does not provide automatic
improvement over the unsupervised case. When the density of the constraints is
sufficiently small, their only impact is to shift the detection threshold while
preserving the criticality. Conversely, if the density of (hard) constraints is
above the percolation threshold, the criticality is suppressed and the

Charge-Mediated Localization of Conjugated Polythiophenes in Zwitterionic Model Cell Membranes.
The selective engineering of conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE)-phospholipid interfaces is poised to play a key role in the design of advanced biomedical and biotechnological devices. Herein, we report a strategic study to investigate the relationship between the charge of the CPE side group and their association with zwitterionic phospholipid bilayers. The interaction of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) phospholipid vesicles with a series of poly(thiophene)s bearing zwitterionic, cationic, or anionic terminal groups (P3Zwit, P3TMAHT and P3Anionic, respectively) has been probed. Although all CPEs showed an affinity for the zwitterionic vesicles, the calculated partition coefficients determined using photoluminescence spectroscopy suggested preferential incorporation within the lipid bilayer in the order P3Zwit > P3Anionic ⫠P3TMAHT. The polarity probe Prodan was used to further qualify the position of the CPE inside the vesicle bilayers via Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) studies. The varying proximity of the CPEs to Prodan was reflected in the Stern-Volmer quenching constants and decreased in the order P3Anionic > P3TMAHT ⫠P3Zwit. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed an increase in the hydrodynamic diameter of the DPPC vesicles upon addition of each poly(thiophene), but to the greatest extent for P3Anionic. Small-angle neutron scattering studies also revealed that P3Anionic specifically increased the thickness of the headgroup region of the phospholipid bilayer. Epifluorescence and atomic force microscopy imaging showed that P3TMAHT formed amorphous agglomerates on the vesicle surface, P3Zwit was buried throughout the bilayer, and P3Anionic formed a shell of protruding chains around the surface, which promoted vesicle fusion. The global data indicate three distinctive modes of interaction for the poly(thiophene)s within DPPC vesicles, whereby the nature of the association is ultimately controlled by the pendant charge group on each CPE chain. Our results suggest that charge-mediated self-assembly may provide a simple and effective route to design luminescent CPE probes capable of specific localization within phospholipid membranes
Single and Composite Hot Subdwarf Stars in the Light of 2MASS Photometry
Utilizing the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) Second Incremental Data
Release Catalog, we have retrieved near-IR magnitudes for several hundred hot
subdwarfs (sdO and sdB stars) drawn from the "Catalogue of Spectroscopically
Identified Hot Subdwarfs" (Kilkenny, Heber, & Drilling 1988, 1992). This sample
size greatly exceeds that of previous studies of hot subdwarfs. Examining 2MASS
photometry alone or in combination with visual photometry (Johnson BV or
Stromgren uvby) available in the literature, we show that it is possible to
identify hot subdwarf stars that exhibit atypically red IR colors that can be
attributed to the presence of an unresolved late type companion. Utilizing this
large sample, we attempt for the first time to define an approximately volume
limited sample of hot subdwarfs. We discuss the considerations, biases, and
difficulties in defining such a sample.
We find that, of the hot subdwarfs in Kilkenny et al., about 40% in a
magnitude limited sample have colors that are consistent with the presence of
an unresolved late type companion. Binary stars are over-represented in a
magnitude limited sample. In an approximately volume limited sample the

A portable diagnostic device for cardiac magnetic field mapping
In this paper we present a portable magnetocardiography device. The focus of this development was delivering a rapid assessment of chest pain in an emergency department. The aim was therefore to produce an inexpensive device that could be rapidly deployed in a noisy unshielded ward environment. We found that induction coil magnetometers with a coil design optimized for magnetic field mapping possess sufficient sensitivity (104fT /â Hz noise floor at 10Hz) and response (813fT /”V at 10Hz) for cycle averaged magnetocardiography and are able to measure depolarisation signals in an unshielded environment. We were unable to observe repolarisation signals to a reasonable fidelity. We present the design of the induction coil sensor array and signal processing routine along with data demonstrating performance in a hospital environment
Quantification of aluminum-induced changes in wheat root architecture by X-ray microcomputed tomography
Root architectural traits are of fundamental importance for plant performance, especially under unfavorable soil conditions. This study examined the effect of aluminum (Al) toxicity in different growing media (nutrient solutions and soil) on root architecture of two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars with different Al tolerances. Seedlings were grown in acidic and limed soil and in two contrasting nutrient solutions. Root systems of soil-grown plants were scanned using x-ray microcomputed tomography (”CT) while that of nutrient solutionâgrown plants were assesses using WinRhizo, 3 and 5 days after planting (DAP), respectively. Aluminum caused significant reduction of all examined root traits (number of seminal roots, root length, length of the longest seminal root, root surface area, and root volume). Growth in acidic soil caused significant reduction in root length, length of the longest seminal root, and root surface area at 5 DAP. Soil-grown plants produced a larger root system compared to plants grown in nutrient solutions. Aluminum toxicityâinduced differences of root traits were also found between different nutrient solutions. Beside the well-known reduction of root length, Al toxicity had a profound effect on other root architectural traits. X-ray ”CT has revealed root architectural changes under specific conditions of acidic, Al-toxic soil. Differences obtained in Al-induced effects on root architecture between different nutrient solutions as well as between different growing systems emphasize the need for further study of root architecture, especially under specific conditions of Al toxicity in acidic soils
