Line of Dirac monopoles embedded in a Bose-Einstein condensate

The gauge field of a uniform line of magnetic monopoles is created using a single Laguerre-Gauss laser mode and a gradient in the physical magnetic field. We study the effect of these monopoles on a Bose condensed atomic gas, whose vortex structure transforms when more than six monopoles are trapped within the cloud. Finally, we study this transition with the collective modes

Sets and indices in linear programming modelling and their integration with relational data models

    Get PDF
LP models are usually constructed using index sets and data tables which are closely related to the attributes and relations of relational database (RDB) systems. We extend the syntax of MPL, an existing LP modelling language, in order to connect it to a given RDB system. This approach reuses existing modelling and database software, provides a rich modelling environment and achieves model and data independence. This integrated software enables Mathematical Programming to be widely used as a decision support tool by unlocking the data residing in corporate databases

PoN-S : a systematic approach for applying the Physics of Notation (PoN)

Visual Modeling Languages (VMLs) are important instruments of communication between modelers and stakeholders. Thus, it is important to provide guidelines for designing VMLs. The most widespread approach for analyzing and designing concrete syntaxes for VMLs is the so-called Physics of Notation (PoN). PoN has been successfully applied in the analysis of several VMLs. However, despite its popularity, the application of PoN principles for designing VMLs has been limited. This paper presents a systematic approach for applying PoN in the design of the concrete syntax of VMLs. We propose here a design process establishing activities to be performed, their connection to PoN principles, as well as criteria for grouping PoN principles that guide this process. Moreover, we present a case study in which a visual notation for representing Ontology Pattern Languages is designed

Effects of Classroom Setting on Self-Esteem in Learning Disabled Students

This study investigates the self-esteem of learning disabled students required to attend learning disabilities classes. Subjects were 35 7th- through 9th-grade, male and female learning disabled (LD) students. Nineteen of the subjects attended at least one resource LD class while the other 16 subjects attended mainstream classes. These groups were matched on intelligence quotients (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised) and reading comprehension standard scores (Peabody Individual Achievement Test) so that no significant differences between the groups, on these measures, existed. The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (Fitts, 1965) was administered to all subjects, along with the closing question, Does attendance in learning disabilities classes affect how much you like yourself? . The results indicated that age, sex, and LD class attendance, do not affect the self-esteem scores of junior high learning disabled students (ANOVA, p \u3e .05). Thus, the hypothesis that LD class attendance affects the self-esteem of junior high school learning disabled students was negated. A majority of subjects also verbally support the notion that LD class attendance does not affect self-esteem. Further research is indicated with female learning disabled subjects because results were close to being significant
