Recent Arrivals of Migrants and Asylum Seekers by Sea to Italy: Problems and Reactions
The Italian government’s answer to the mass arrival of undocumented migrants and asylum seekers since the beginning of the present wave of political turmoil in North Africa must be seen in the context of both domestic political issues and international constraints.
From the beginning of the present wave of political turmoil in North African countries and up to 8 April, 390 boats have arrived in Italy with a total of 25,867 undocumented migrants and asylum seekers, most of them Tunisians. The Italian government’s answer has been framed by both domestic political issues, such as the extreme anti-migrant attitude of the Lega Nord, and by international constraints, such as the refusal of other EU members to receive irregular economic migrants and the difficulty in establishing a workable repatriation accord with Tunisia. Given the situation, the Italian government has been trapped in its own web, made up of contradictory positions and exaggerated forecasts concerning migratory flows

“A Cathartic Moment in a Man’s Life”: Homosociality and Gendered Fun on the Puttan Tour
Rarely addressed in academic scholarship, the puttan tour is a well-known form of entertainment in Italy where young men drive around in small groups with the aim of spotting street sex workers. On some occasions, the participants will approach the sex workers to strike up a conversation. On others, they will shout out insults from their car then drive away. This article aims to advance a detailed analysis of this underexplored cultural practice drawing on a diverse body of scholarship exploring the intersection of masculinity, leisure, and homosociality. By analyzing stories of puttan tours gathered mostly online, including written accounts and YouTube videos, our aim is to explore the appeal of the puttan tour through an analysis of how homosociality, humor, and laughter operate in this example of gendered fun. To this end, we look at the multiple and often equivocal meanings of this homosocial male-bonding ritual, its emotional and affective dynamics, and the ways in which it reproduces structures of inequality while normalizing violence against sex workers
Characterization of an inversion on the long arm of chromosome 10 juxtaposing D10S170 and RET and creating the oncogenic sequence RET/PTC
RET/PTC is a transforming sequence created by the fusion of the tyrosine kinase domain of the RET protooncogene with the 5\u2032 end of the locus D10S170 designated by probe H4 and is frequently found activated in human papillary thyroid carcinomas. RET and D10S170 have been mapped to contiguous regions of the long arm of chromosome 10: q11.2 and q21, respectively. To identify the mechanism leading to the generation of the oncogenic sequence RET/PTC, a combined cytogenetic and molecular analysis of several cases of papillary thyroid carcinomas was done. In four cases the results indicated that these tumors had RET/PTC activation and a paracentric inversion of the long arm of chromosome 10, inv(10)(q11.2q21), with breakpoints coincident with the regions where RET and D10S170 are located. Therefore, a chromosome 10q inversion provides the structural basis for the D10S170-RET fusion that forms the hybrid transforming sequence RET/PTC
