Synchronized artificial insemination was used to inseminate cows using different types of sire genetics, including low-accuracy, calving-ease, and high-accuracy. These three calf sire groups were compared to calves born to cows bred using natural service. We found substantial production efficiency grains, carcass merit improvement, and economic value to calves born to cows following a synchronized artificial insemination program with high-accuracy semen included. The economic advantage to the high-accuracy calf sire group was computed to be in the neighborhood of 40to40 to 80/head, relative to the natural service calf sire group.artificial insemination, beef, cow, carcass, feed-out, genetics, pre-conditioning, sire synchronization., Agricultural Finance,

Management considerations in beef heifer development (2002)

    Get PDF
Because decisions about selecting and managing replacement beef heifers can affect the future productivity of an entire cowherd, programs to develop breeding heifers have focused on the physiological processes that influence puberty. The timing of puberty is critical to whether a heifer remains in the herd and whether lifetime productivity is optimized.New 6/97; Reviewed and reprinted 10/02/5M

Instrumentation for Millimeter-wave Magnetoelectrodynamic Investigations of Low-Dimensional Conductors and Superconductors

We describe instrumentation for conducting high sensitivity millimeter-wave cavity perturbation measurements over a broad frequency range (40-200 GHz) and in the presence of strong magnetic fields (up to 33 tesla). A Millimeter-wave Vector Network Analyzer (MVNA) acts as a continuously tunable microwave source and phase sensitive detector (8-350 GHz), enabling simultaneous measurements of the complex cavity parameters (resonance frequency and Q-value) at a rapid repetition rate (approx. 10 kHz). We discuss the principal of operation of the MVNA and the construction of a probe for coupling the MVNA to various cylindrical resonator configurations which can easily be inserted into a high field magnet cryostat. We also present several experimental results which demonstrate the potential of the instrument for studies of low-dimensional conducting systems.Comment: 20 pages including fig

This paper describes concerning the efforts of Jakarta urban community to peace with mental disorders caused by many factors, one of which is the hard life in Jakarta demanding society able to adapt the rapid changes. The impact of rapid changes in the community mental health can be seen in the presence of: school dropping out, fighting between students, or fighting between ethnic village, the violence on woman and children, crime, psychosomatic disorder, acute anxiety, depression and other mental health problems. Indonesian Schizophrenia Community Care (KPSI) tries to peace with mental illness disorder through art therapy. Various activities are explored to determine the response on persons with schizophrenia to therapy sessions and its psychological impacts. Art therapy here is not intended to replace medical treatment and does not offer instant recovery, but rather act as a supportiing therapy of pharmacotherapy. Some of the activities that have been implemented include: drawing, painting, creating murals, painting batik and making collages. These activities are carried out by a group thematic format with a semi-structural approach. With the gradual flexible implementation strategy, therapy sessions show the contribution to the development of more well developed self-esteem, self-confidence, fluency to respond stimulus, imagination and problem-solving abilities, being able to interact and socialize with others in a positive way, as well as their fine motoric develop more skilled. Development themes that is explored has more orientation to provide comfortable, enjoyable sensory and aesthetic experience and satisfy personal to build confidence and openness in sharing life experiences. The art works they create and exhibitions held by KPSI is an effort to reduce negative stigma attached to them. The progress report of the development of individual and group potential in writing give special attention to personal and interpersonal abilities related art work activities. Data for the report was obtained through observation participation, in-depth interviews, the study on documents related to art therapy session held from February to May 2013. The report results constitutes a feed-back concerning strengths and weaknesses of persons with schizophrenia and also serves as an evaluation instrument for the implementation of art therapy sessions that have been taking place. Efforts to peace with mental illness through art therapy program is a real contribution form of the art to the Jakarta urban life. Keywords: Art, urban society, Jakarta, peace, mental disorder

The measurement of residual feed intake to determine feed efficiency of pregnant Hereford heifers

Abstract only availableThe large potential improvement in profitability is what makes feed efficiency such a studied and concerned topic in the beef industry today. Currently, no herd exists in the United States that has been selected solely for the purpose of measuring and improving feed efficiency. The objective of this study was to rank forty-two pregnant Hereford heifers based on their feed efficiencies, so that they may be mated to bulls of known efficiency. The long term goal of this project is to create both efficient and inefficient herds for future feed efficiency research. These heifers were acquired from various beef producers across the state to ensure genetic variation within the herd. The heifers were fed an alfalfa/grass hay to which they had ad libitum access. Their diet was 86% dry matter and contained 58% neutral detergent fiber, 38% acid detergent fiber, and 14% crude protein on a dry matter basis. The individual intake of each heifer was recorded by the GrowSafe® feed intake system. Expected feed intake was calculated as a regression of actual intake on average daily gain and metabolic mid-weight. Expected feed intake was subtracted from actual feed intake to calculate the residual feed intake value of each individual heifer. Residual feed intake was then used as a measure of feed efficiency. The average body weight at the start of the study was 488 kg. Heifers consumed on average 17.77 ± 5.24 kg/d, and the herd gained at a rate of 0.77 ± 0.32 kg/d. The most efficient heifer consumed 9.78 kg/d less than was expected, while the most inefficient heifer consumed 11.54 kg/d more than was expected. Calculating residual feed intake as a means of determining feed efficiency will enable us to establish both efficient and inefficient herds for further research.F.B. Coral of Opportunity Survivorship and the Use of Coral Nurseries in Coral Reef Restoration

Coral reef damage is unfortunately becoming a common occurrence off southeast Florida, U.S.A. Reattachment of the dislodged scleractinian corals usually initiates damage site restoration. Because mortality of dislodged colonies is typically high and natural recovery in southeast Florida is typically slow, transplantation of additional scleractinian corals into a damaged area has been used to accelerate reef recovery. Donor colonies available for transplantation have been grown in situ, grown in laboratories, and taken from nondamaged reef areas. An alternative source of donor colonies for transplantation into damaged sites is “corals of opportunity,” which we define as scleractinian corals that have been detached from the reef through natural processes or unknown events. This paper describes a project, initiated in 2001 in Broward County, Florida, that was developed to collect these dislodged colonies and transplant them to a coral nursery. Coral nurseries are interim locations that function as storage sites for corals of opportunity where they can be cached, stabilized, and allowed to grow, until needed as donor colonies for future restoration activities. This project is a partnership between a local university, county government, and a volunteer dive group. Two hundred and fifty corals of opportunity were collected, transplanted to the coral nurseries, and monitored for survival. Transplanted colony survival was similar to that of naturally attached control colonies and significantly greater than that of corals of opportunity left unattached. Results provide resource managers with information on the utility of using corals of opportunity as a source of transplant donor colonies, and the value of using coral nurseries to create a reserve of corals of opportunity for use in future coral reef restoration activities

Oil film interferometry in high Reynolds number turbulent boundary layers

There is continuing debate regarding the validity of skin friction measurements that are dependent on the functional form of the mean velocity profile, for example, the Clauser chart method. This has brought about the need for independent and direct measures of wall shear stress, tw. Of the independent methods to measure tw, oil film interferometry is the most promising, and it has been extensively used recently at low and moderately high Reynolds number. The technique uses interferometry to measure the thinning rate of an oil film, which is linearly related to the level of shear stress acting on the oil film. In this paper we report on the use of this technique in a high Reynolds number boundary layer up to Rq = 50,000. Being an independent measure of tw, the oil film measurement can be used as a means to validate more conventional techniques, such as the Preston tube and Clauser chart at these high Reynolds numbers. The oil-film measurement is validated by making comparative measurements of tw in a large-scale fully-developed channel flow facility where the skin friction is known from the pressure gradient along the channe
