    Pt-impregnated catalysts on powdery SiC and other commercial supports for the combustion of hydrogen under oxidant conditions

    We report the study of the catalytic hydrogen combustion over Pt-impregnated powdery silicon carbide (SiC) using H2PtCl6 as precursor. The reaction was conducted in excess of oxygen. β-SiC was selected for the study because of its thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, chemical inertness and surface area. The obtained Pt particles over SiC were medium size (average particle diameter of 5 nm for 0.5 wt% Pt). The activity of the Pt-impregnated catalyst over SiC was compared to those obtained in oxidized form over TiO2 and Al2O3 commercial supports (Pt particles very small in size, average particle diameter of 1 nm for 0.5 wt% Pt in both cases). The case of a SiO2 support was also discussed. Those Pt/SiC particles were the most active because of their higher contribution of surface Pt0, indicating that partially oxidized surfaces have better activity than those totally oxidized in these conditions. SiC was modified with an acid treatment and thus bigger (average particle diameter of 7 nm for 0.5 wt% Pt) and more active Pt particles were obtained. Durability of the SiC and TiO2 supported catalysts was tested upon 5 cycles and both have shown to be durable and even more active than initially. Exposure to the oxidative reaction mixture activates the catalysts and the effect is more pronounced for the completely oxidized particles.     Introdução: A Hemocromatose Neonatal é uma doença hepática rara de início intrauterino, definida por insuficiência hepática neonatal associada a siderose extra-hepática. A doença hepática gestacional aloimune foi estabelecida como causa da lesão hepática fetal. Atualmente, não existe uma abordagem eficaz para o diagnóstico prénatal. Caso Clínico: Grávida de 23 anos apresentou às 32 semanas de gestação oligohidrâmnios e focos hepáticos hiperecogénicos. O recém-nascido prematuro desenvolveu falência orgânica multissistémica e faleceu ao segundo dia de vida, apesar de cuidados de suporte intensivos. A autópsia permitiu o diagnóstico de Hemocromatose Neonatal. Conclusão: A identificação ecográfica de focos nodulares hiperecogénicos no fígado fetal pode ser sugestiva de Hemocromatose Neonatal. Investigações adicionais são necessárias para identificar o complexo aloimunitário específico no sangue materno. O estabelecimento do diagnóstico num feto ou recém- -nascido afetado pode ter um grande impacto no prognóstico da doença e no desfecho de futuras gravidezes

    Search for associations containing young stars (SACY) VII. New stellar and substellar candidate members in the young associations

    The young associations offer us one of the best opportunities to study the properties of young stellar and substellar objects and to directly image planets thanks to their proximity (<<200 pc) and age (≈\approx5-150 Myr). However, many previous works have been limited to identifying the brighter, more active members (≈\approx1 M⊙_\odot) owing to photometric survey sensitivities limiting the detections of lower mass objects. We search the field of view of 542 previously identified members of the young associations to identify wide or extremely wide (1000-100,000 au in physical separation) companions. We combined 2MASS near-infrared photometry (JJ, HH, KK) with proper motion values (from UCAC4, PPMXL, NOMAD) to identify companions in the field of view of known members. We collated further photometry and spectroscopy from the literature and conducted our own high-resolution spectroscopic observations for a subsample of candidate members. This complementary information allowed us to assess the efficiency of our method. We identified 84 targets (45: 0.2-1.3 M⊙_\odot, 17: 0.08-0.2 M⊙_\odot, 22: <<0.08 M⊙_\odot) in our analysis, ten of which have been identified from spectroscopic analysis in previous young association works. For 33 of these 84, we were able to further assess their membership using a variety of properties (X-ray emission, UV excess, Hα_\alpha, lithium and K I equivalent widths, radial velocities, and CaH indices). We derive a success rate of 76-88% for this technique based on the consistency of these properties. Once confirmed, the targets identified in this work would significantly improve our knowledge of the lower mass end of the young associations.     On the binary nature of 1RXS J162848.1-415241

    We present spectroscopy of the optical counterpart to 1RXS J162848.1-41524, also known as the microquasar candidate MCQC J162847-4152. All the data indicate that this X-ray source is not a microquasar, and that it is a single-lined chromospherically active binary system with a likely orbital period of 4.9 days. Our analysis supports a K3IV spectral classification for the star, which is dominant at optical wavelengths. The unseen binary component is most likely a late-type (K7-M) dwarf or a white dwarf. Using the high resolution spectra we have measured the K3 star's rotational broadening to be vsini = 43 +/- 3 km/s and determined a lower limit to the binary mass ratio of q(=M2/M1)>2.0. The high rotational broadening together with the strong CaII H & K / Halpha emission and high-amplitude photometric variations indicate that the evolved star is very chromospherically active and responsible for the X-ray/radio emission.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    TYC 8380-1953-1: Discovery of an RS CVn binary through the XMM-Newton slew survey

    In this paper we report the discovery of the chromospherically active (RS CVn type) binary TYC 8380-1953-1 through the XMM-Newton slew survey and present results of our optical and X-ray follow-up. With a flux limit of 6×10−136 \times 10^{-13} erg cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1} in the soft band (0.2−20.2 - 2 keV), the XMM-Newton slew has a similar sensitivity to the ROSAT All Sky Survey allowing interesting sources to be identified by their long-term variability. Two different types of stellar sources are detected in shallow X-ray surveys: young stars (both pre-main and main sequence stars) and chromospherically active binaries (BY Dra and RS CVn type systems). The discovery of stars in such surveys and the study of their nature through optical follow-ups is valuable to determine their spatial distribution and scale height in the Galaxy. Our analysis shows that TYC 8380-1953-1 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary with both components having similar spectral type (likely K0/2+K3/5) and luminosity. With a typical coronal temperature for an RS CVn system (kT∼1.15kT \sim 1.15 keV) and an X-ray luminosity in the 0.3−100.3-10 keV energy band higher than 4×10314 \times 10^{31} erg\,s−1^{-1}, TYC 8380-1953-1 lies among the most X-ray luminous RS CVn binaries.Comment: Accepted for publication in the PASP. 18 pages, 10 figure

    Investigating Ca II emission in the RS CVn binary ER Vulpeculae using the Broadening Function Formalism

    The synchronously rotating G stars in the detached, short-period (0.7 d), partially eclipsing binary, ER Vul, are the most chromospherically active solar-type stars known. We have monitored activity in the Ca II H & K reversals for almost an entire orbit. Rucinski's Broadening Function Formalism allows the photospheric contribution to be objectively subtracted from the highly blended spectra. The power of the BF technique is also demonstrated by the good agreement of radial velocities with those measured by others from less crowded spectral regions. In addition to strong Ca II emission from the primary and secondary, there appears to be a high-velocity stream flowing onto the secondary where it stimulates a large active region on the surface 30 - 40 degrees in advance of the sub-binary longitude. A model light curve with a spot centered on the same longitude also gives the best fit to the observed light curve. A flare with approximately 13% more power than at other phases was detected in one spectrum. We suggest ER Vul may offer a magnified view of the more subtle chromospheric effects synchronized to planetary revolution seen in certain `51 Peg'-type systems.Comment: Accepted to AJ; 17 pages and 16 figure

    The SED of Low-Luminosity AGNs at high-spatial resolution

    The inner structure of AGNs is expected to change below a certain luminosity limit. The big blue bump, footprint of the accretion disk, is absent for the majority of low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs). Moreover, recent simulations suggest that the torus, a keystone in the Unified Model, vanishes for nuclei with L_bol < 10^42 erg/s. However, the study of LLAGN is a complex task due to the contribution of the host galaxy, which light swamps these faint nuclei. This is specially critical in the IR range, at the maximum of the torus emission, due to the contribution of the old stellar population and/or dust in the nuclear region. Adaptive optics imaging in the NIR (VLT/NaCo) together with diffraction limited imaging in the mid-IR (VLT/VISIR) permit us to isolate the nuclear emission for some of the nearest LLAGNs in the Southern Hemisphere. These data were extended to the optical/UV range (HST), radio (VLA, VLBI) and X-rays (Chandra, XMM-Newton, Integral), in order to build a genuine spectral energy distribution (SED) for each AGN with a consistent spatial resolution (< 0.5") across the whole spectral range. From the individual SEDs, we construct an average SED for LLAGNs sampled in all the wavebands mentioned before. Compared with previous multiwavelength studies of LLAGNs, this work covers the mid-IR and NIR ranges with high-spatial resolution data. The LLAGNs in the sample present a large diversity in terms of SED shapes. Some of them are very well described by a self-absorbed synchrotron (e.g. NGC 1052), while some other present a thermal-like bump at ~1 micron (NGC 4594). All of them are significantly different when compared with bright Seyferts and quasars, suggesting that the inner structure of AGNs (i.e. the torus and the accretion disk) suffers intrinsic changes at low luminosities.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures.
