    Molecular basis of flowering under natural long-day conditions in <i>Arabidopsis</i>

    Plants sense light and temperature changes to regulate flowering time. Here, we show that expression of the Arabidopsis florigen gene, FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT), peaks in the morning during spring, a different pattern than we observe in the laboratory. Providing our laboratory growth conditions with a red/far-red light ratio similar to open-field conditions and daily temperature oscillation is sufficient to mimic the FT expression and flowering time in natural long days. Under the adjusted growth conditions, key light signalling components, such as phytochrome A and EARLY FLOWERING 3, play important roles in morning FT expression. These conditions stabilize CONSTANS protein, a major FT activator, in the morning, which is probably a critical mechanism for photoperiodic flowering in nature. Refining the parameters of our standard growth conditions to more precisely mimic plant responses in nature can provide a powerful method for improving our understanding of seasonal response

    The in vitro activity of cefepime was compared to that of ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, and cefotaxime in a multicenter study involving 10 clinical microbiology laboratories and clinical isolates from 18 Brazilian hospitals from 7 cities (4 states). A total of 982 isolates consecutively collected between December 1995 and March 1996 were susceptibility tested by using Etest and following the NCCLS procedures for agar diffusion tests. The cefepime spectrum was broader than that of the other broad-spectrum cephalosporins against both Gram-negative rods and Gram-positive cocci. Cefepime tons particularly move active against Enterobacter sp. (MIC90, 2 mu g/ml), Serratia sp. (MIC90, 2 mu g/ml) and oxacillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MIC90, 3 mu g/ml). Against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, cefepime (MIC90 16 mu g/ml) was slightly more active than ceftazidime (MIC90 32 mu g/ml) and 8- to 16-fold more active than ceftriaxone or cefotaxime (MIC90 >256 mu g/ml). Our results show that nosocomial bacteria, especially Gram-negative rods, have a high rate of cephalosporin resistance in Brazil. However, part of these resistant bacteria remains susceptible to cefepime. The Etest was shown to be an excellent method for multicenter studies of the in vitro evaluation of new antimicrobial agents. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Inc.282879

    Neurocisticercose e síndrome de lennox-gastaut: relato de caso Neurocysticercosis and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome: case report

    Relata-se o caso de uma menina que, aos 2 anos de idade, apresentou a forma epiléptica, hidrocefálica e encefalítica da neurocisticercose, diagnosticada por exame do líquido cefalorraqueano e tomografia computadorizada de crânio, evolução com crises polimórficas, episódios de descompensação da hipertensão intracraniana por obstrução do sistema de derivação ventriculoperitoneal, retardo no desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor e cegueira até que, aos 10 anos de idade, foi diagnosticada síndrome de Lennox-Gastaut. Atualmente, a paciente tem 16 anos, apresenta sequelas neurológicas e crises parciais complexas com automatismos, parcialmente controladas com o uso de clobazan e oxcarbazepina. A primeira associação de neurocisticercose e síndrome de Lennox-Gastaut foi descrita em 1973, por Frochtengarten & Scarante, em uma menina com quadro clínico semelhante ao do caso relatado.<br>Report of a girl with the epileptic, hydrocephalic and encephalitic form of neurocysticercosis, diagnosed by cerebrospinal flui and computed tomography exams, during her second year of life and an evolution with multiple types of seizures, prolonged periods of intracranial hypertension due to obstruction in the ventriculoperitoneal shunt, psicomotor regression and blindness until she was 10 years old, when the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome was diagnosed. Nowadays the patient is 16 years old and presents complex partial seizures with automatism not completely controlled with clobazan and oxcarbazepine, associated to left spastic hemiparesis, universal hyperreflexia, psychomotor agitation, self-mutilation, amaurosis and severe mental retardation. The association between neurocysticercosis and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome was first described in 1973 by Frochtengarten & Scarante in a Brazilian girl with a similar clinical picture
