On Schwarzschild's Topology in Brane-Worlds
The topological structure of Schwarzschild's space-time and its maximal
analytic extension are investigated in context of brane-worlds. Using the
embedding coordinates, these geometries are seen as different states of the
evolution of a single brane-world. Comparing the topologies and the embeddings
it is shown that this evolution must be followed by a signature change in the
bulk.Comment: 6 page
Analysis of the Spectral Energy Distributions of Fermi bright blazars
Blazars are a small fraction of all extragalactic sources but, unlike other
objects, they are strong emitters across the entire electromagnetic spectrum.
In this study we have conducted a detailed investigation of the broad-band
spectral properties of the gamma-ray selected blazars of the Fermi-LAT Bright
AGN Sample (LBAS). By combining the accurately estimated Fermi gamma-ray
spectra with Swift, radio, NIR-Optical and hard-X/gamma-ray data, collected
within three months of the LBAS data taking period, we were able to assemble
high-quality and quasi-simultaneous Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) for 48
LBAS blazars.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, "2009 Fermi Symposium", "eConf Proceedings

What is the topology of a Schwarzschild black hole?
We investigate the topology of Schwarzschild's black hole through the
immersion of this space-time in spaces of higher dimension. Through the
immersions of Kasner and Fronsdal we calculate the extension of the
Schwarzschild's black hole.Comment: 7 pages. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with

The Kuramoto model with distributed shear
We uncover a solvable generalization of the Kuramoto model in which shears
(or nonisochronicities) and natural frequencies are distributed and
statistically dependent. We show that the strength and sign of this dependence
greatly alter synchronization and yield qualitatively different phase diagrams.
The Ott-Antonsen ansatz allows us to obtain analytical results for a specific
family of joint distributions. We also derive, using linear stability analysis,
general formulae for the stability border of incoherence.Comment: 6 page
Design, synthesis and biological activity of selective hCAs inhibitors based on 2-(benzylsulfinyl)benzoic acid scaffold
A large library of derivatives based on the scaffold of 2-(benzylsulfinyl)benzoic acid were synthesised and tested as atypical inhibitors against four different isoforms of human carbonic anhydrase (hCA I, II, IX and XII, EC 4.2.1.1). The exploration of the chemical space around the main functional groups led to the discovery of selective hCA IX inhibitors in the micromolar/nanomolar range, thus establishing robust structure-activity relationships within this versatile scaffold. HPLC separation of some selected chiral compounds and biological evaluation of the corresponding enantiomers was performed along with molecular modelling studies on the most active derivatives
Multi-access laser communications transceiver system
A satellite system for optical communications such as a multi-access laser transceiver system. Up to six low Earth orbiting satellites send satellite data to a geosynchronous satellite. The data is relayed to a ground station at the Earth's surface. The earth pointing geosynchronous satellite terminal has no gimbal but has a separate tracking mechanism for tracking each low Earth orbiting satellite. The tracking mechanism has a ring assembly rotatable about an axis coaxial with the axis of the field of view of the geosynchronous satellite and a pivotable arm mounted for pivotal movement on the ring assembly. An optical pickup mechanism at the end of each arm is positioned for optical communication with one of the orbiting satellites by rotation of the ring
The alpha-1A adrenergic receptor agonist A61603 reduces cardiac polyunsaturated fatty acid and endocannabinoid metabolites associated with inflammation in vivo
Alpha-1-adrenergic receptors (α1-ARs) are G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) with three highly homologous subtypes (α1A, α1B, and α1D). Of these three subtypes, only the α1A and α1B are expressed in the heart. Multiple pre-clinical models of heart injury demonstrate cardioprotective roles for the α1A. Non-selective α1-AR activation promotes glycolysis in the heart, but the functional α1-AR subtype and broader metabolic effects have not been studied
