Scaling and Suppression of Anomalous Heating in Ion Traps

    Get PDF
We measure and characterize anomalous motional heating of an atomic ion confined in the lowest quantum levels of a novel rf ion trap that features moveable electrodes. The scaling of heating with electrode proximity is measured, and when the electrodes are cooled from 300 to 150 K, the heating rate is suppressed by an order of magnitude. This provides direct evidence that anomalous motional heating of trapped ions stems from microscopic noisy potentials on the electrodes that are thermally driven. These observations are relevant to decoherence in quantum information processing schemes based on trapped ions and perhaps other charge-based quantum systems

Bell inequality violation with two remote atomic qubits

We observe violation of a Bell inequality between the quantum states of two remote Yb ions separated by a distance of about one meter with the detection loophole closed. The heralded entanglement of two ions is established via interference and joint detection of two emitted photons, whose polarization is entangled with each ion. The entanglement of remote qubits is also characterized by full quantum state tomography.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH STUDIES OF KENTUCKY BLACKBIRD ROOSTS

    Get PDF
At the present time we are under contract from the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission to study three aspects of Kentucky starling-blackbird roost problems: (1) a study of birds killed this coming winter through PA-14 treatments, to obtain more accurate data on species composition, sex ratios, kill success and food items; (2) a compilation of breeding and wintering data on Kentucky populations through analysis of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service summer bird counts and banding returns; and (3) a study of spore dispersal of various fungal species, most notably Histoplasma capsulatum, from roost sites. The winter sampling is yet to be done, as sprayings most likely will not be undertaken until December. The analysis of population figures is complete and will be partially reported herein, as some data may be of significance for application to future management efforts. The histoplasmosis study began in June 1976 and will continue throughout the winter and spring; some preliminary results are deemed of significance to management efforts and are also reported herein

A heralded quantum gate between remote quantum memories

We demonstrate a probabilistic entangling quantum gate between two distant trapped ytterbium ions. The gate is implemented between the hyperfine "clock" state atomic qubits and mediated by the interference of two emitted photons carrying frequency encoded qubits. Heralded by the coincidence detection of these two photons, the gate has an average fidelity of 90+-2%. This entangling gate together with single qubit operations is sufficient to generate large entangled cluster states for scalable quantum computing

Abelian Sandpile Model on the Husimi Lattice of Square Plaquettes

An Abelian sandpile model is considered on the Husimi lattice of square plaquettes. Exact expressions for the distribution of height probabilities in the Self-Organized Critical state are derived. The two-point correlation function for the sites deep inside the Husimi lattice is calculated exactly.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, source files and some additional information available at http://thsun1.jinr.dubna.su/~shcher

    Business in Nebraska # 278 - November 1967

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (James W. Monroe) After 100 years of growth and prosperity based firmly upon a nearly self-sufficient agricultural economy, why has Nebraska seen fit to depart from its rural image and increase its efforts in the highly competitive business of attracting industry? Business Summary (E. L. Burgess) August\u27s dollar volume of business in Nebraska increased 3.3% from August, 1966 and the physical volume increased 2.7%. The U.S. dollar volume rose 5.3% from August, 1966. The U.S. construction activity index increased over year-ago levels for the first time since May, 1966. Nebraska\u27s construction index, having last shown an increase over year-ago levels in September, 1966, remained down with a 14.3% decline from August, 1966. Life insurance sales (-1.1%) was the only other Nebraska indicator declining from year-ago levels. Review (E. S. Wallace

The Solar Twin Planet Search II. A Jupiter twin around a solar twin

Through our HARPS radial velocity survey for planets around solar twin stars, we have identified a promising Jupiter twin candidate around the star HIP11915. We characterize this Keplerian signal and investigate its potential origins in stellar activity. Our analysis indicates that HIP11915 hosts a Jupiter-mass planet with a 3800-day orbital period and low eccentricity. Although we cannot definitively rule out an activity cycle interpretation, we find that a planet interpretation is more likely based on a joint analysis of RV and activity index data. The challenges of long-period radial velocity signals addressed in this paper are critical for the ongoing discovery of Jupiter-like exoplanets. If planetary in nature, the signal investigated here represents a very close analog to the solar system in terms of both Sun-like host star and Jupiter-like planet.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures; A&A accepted; typos corrected in this versio

Decoherence in ion traps due to laser intensity and phase fluctuations

    Get PDF
We consider one source of decoherence for a single trapped ion due to intensity and phase fluctuations in the exciting laser pulses. For simplicity we assume that the stochastic processes involved are white noise processes, which enables us to give a simple master equation description of this source of decoherence. This master equation is averaged over the noise, and is sufficient to describe the results of experiments that probe the oscillations in the electronic populations as energy is exchanged between the internal and electronic motion. Our results are in good qualitative agreement with recent experiments and predict that the decoherence rate will depend on vibrational quantum number in different ways depending on which vibrational excitation sideband is used.Comment: 2 figures, submitted to PR

Preparing encoded states in an oscillator

    Get PDF
Recently a scheme has been proposed for constructing quantum error-correcting codes that embed a finite-dimensional code space in the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space of a system described by continuous quantum variables. One of the difficult steps in this scheme is the preparation of the encoded states. We show how these states can be generated by coupling a continuous quantum variable to a single qubit. An ion trap quantum computer provides a natural setting for a continuous system coupled to a qubit. We discuss how encoded states may be generated in an ion trap.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, RevTe
