    Relating B_s Mixing and B_s -> mu+mu- with New Physics

    We perform a study of the Standard Model (SM) fit to the mixing quantities ΔMBs\Delta M_{B_s}, and ΔΓBs/ΔMBs\Delta \Gamma_{B_s}/\Delta M_{B_s} in order to bound contributions of New Physics to BsB_s mixing. We then use this to explore the branching fraction of Bsμ+μB_{s} \to \mu^+\mu^- in certain models of New Physics (NP). In most cases, this constrains NP amplitudes for Bsμ+μB_{s} \to \mu^+\mu^- to lie below the SM component.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures; corrected misprints, updated numerical inputs and new reference

    Porous glass-ceramics from alkali activation and sinter-crystallization of mixtures of waste glass and residues from plasma processing of municipal solid waste

    Alkali-activated aqueous slurries of fine glass powders, mostly deriving from the plasma processing of municipal solid waste ('Plasmastone'), were found to undergo progressive hardening at low temperature (75 degrees C) owing to the formation of C-S-H (calcium silicate hydrate) gels. Before complete setting, slurries could be easily foamed by vigorous mechanical stirring, with the help of a surfactant; finally, the resulting open-celled structure could be 'frozen' by a subsequent sintering treatment, with crystallization of Ca-Fe silicates. The densification of the struts upon firing was enhanced by mixing Plasmastone with up to 30 wt% recycled glasses and increasing the firing temperature from 800 to 1000 degrees C. A total porosity exceeding 75 vol%, comprising both well-interconnected macro- and micro-sized pores on cell walls, was accompanied by good compressive strength, well above 1 MPa. The stabilization of pollutants generally increased with increasing firing temperature and glass content, with some exceptions; no practical leaching was observed from samples deriving from Plasmastone combined with 30 wt% boro-aluminosilicate glass from the recycling of pharmaceutical vials

    Nominal inflection classes in verbal paradigms

    It is not uncommon for inflected nominal forms to be incorporated into verbal paradigms, as in Imonda progressive construction tōbtō soh-ia ale-f ‘he is looking for fish (lit. fish search-loc stay-prs)’, where the verbal noun ‘search’ is in the locative case. Equally, nominal inflection classes are not uncommon. But the two rarely cooccur. We present two case studies (the only examples we are aware of) as a contribution to the typology of inflection class systems: the Western Nilotic language Nuer, and Old Irish. In these languages nominal inflection class distinctions in case marking have become part of the verbal paradigm through the incorporation of constructions involving deverbal nouns. This provides a unique context for observing the properties of inflection classes. In Nuer, case inflection of the verbal noun can be deduced through a cascading series of implicatures, laying bare processes which are entirely covert in the ordinary noun system. With Old Irish, its transition to the modern period was accompanied by a split in the behaviour of verbal nouns, whose inflection class system was simplified when used verbally, but left intact in other contexts, showing that incorporation into the verbal paradigm had real effects on the system

Доведена експериментально висока ефективність знезаражуючої дії НВЧ електромагнітного поля при умові дотримання необхідної концентрації потужності і часу витримки.Devices, providing high concentration of superhigh-frequency electromagnetic field by means of the transition from a square form of a waveguide to cruciform one and the use of two polarization untied magnetrons, are introduced. Results of testing such a device on two environments are brought: on water and milk. High efficiency of disinfecting action of superhigh-frequency electromagnetic field is proved at observance of conditions of required field concentration and time of endurance.Предложены устройства, обеспечивающие высокую концентрацию СВЧ электромагнитного поля, создаваемую при переходе от квадратной формы волновода к крестообразной и использовании двух поляризационно развязанных магнетронов.     The article discusses the situation of the collection coming from the Vilnius Belarusian Museum named after Ivan Luckievič in the museum collections of the BSSR. Based on a query conducted in the museum archives, the author presents the elimination process of the exhibits, expert opinions prepared by the museum staff to justify this necessity, and doubts concerning the objective approach to the research. The comparison of documents from different museums allowed to find out the fate of some exhibits after the elimination and to restore their origin story

    Low temperature upcycling of vitreous byproduct of the MSW plasma processing into multifunctional porous glass-ceramics

    Mixtures of glass residues, deriving from the plasma processing of municipal solid waste (\u2018Plasmastone\u2019), and recycled glasses have been already converted into highly porous glass-ceramics by application of an inorganic gel casting technique (foaming, by intensive mechanical stirring, of alkali activated slurries) followed by sintering at 1000\ub0C. The full potential of recycled glass, however, has not been disclosed yet. The present investigation, in fact, demonstrates that boro-alumino-silicate glass, from discarded pharmaceutical vials, may allow for sintering of cellular glass-ceramics at particularly low temperature, i.e. at 800\ub0C. The full stabilisation of heavy metals from Plasmastone (already assessed for treatments at 1000\ub0C) is not compromised, whereas the low processing temperatures favour the separation of magnetite, in turn imparting new functionalities (e.g. electromagnetic shielding) to waste-derived glass-ceramic foams

    Vowel Length in Nuer

    Here we examine newly collected Nuer data to show that Western Nilotic language Nuer distinguishes three degrees of vowel length. Since vowel length plays a crucial role in nominal inflection, we examine distribution of the three degrees of vowel length in the nominal paradigm. Our preliminary conclusion is that Nuer vowels are lexically specified for two degrees of vowel length only – short and long, and that overlong vowels emerge only as an outcome of a morphological operation which lengthens short and long vowels. Since we conclude that the three degrees of vowel length do not have equal status in the Nuer grammar, our findings therefore are in line with the reported typological markedness of the three-way contrast in vowel length
