Distance and reddening of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822
On the basis of a new photometric analysis of the Local Group dwarf irregular
galaxy NCG 6822 based on observations obtained with the Advanced Camera for
Surveys onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained a new estimate of
the extinction of two fields located in the southeast region of the galaxy.
Because of significant differences in the distance estimates to NGC 6822
available in literature, we decided to provide an independent determination of
the distance to this galaxy based on an updated and self-consistent theoretical
calibration of the tip of the red giant branch brightness. As a result we newly
determined the distance to NGC 6822 to be equal to , and compared our measurement with the most recent determinations of this

A state-of-the-art analysis of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822
We present a detailed photometric study of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC
6822 aimed at investigating the properties of its stellar populations and, in
particular, the presence of stellar radial gradients. Our goal is to analyse
the stellar populations in six fields, which cover the whole bar of this dwarf
galaxy. We derived the quantitative star formation history (SFH) of the six
fields using the IAC method, involving IAC-pop/MinnIAC codes. The solutions we
derived show an enhanced star formation rate (SFR) in Fields 1 and 3 during the
past 500 Myr. The SFRs of the other fields are almost extinguished at very
recent epochs and. We study the radial gradients of the SFR and consider the
total mass converted into stars in two time intervals (between 0 and 0.5 Gyr
ago and between 0.5 and 13.5 Gyr ago). We find that the scale lengths of the
young and intermediate-to-old populations are perfectly compatible, with the
exception of the young populations in Fields 1 and 3. The recent SF in these
two fields is greater than in the other ones. This might be an indication that
in these two fields we are sampling incipient spiral arms. Further evidence and
new observations are required to prove this hypothesis. In addition, we derived
the age-metallicity relations. As expected, the metallicity increases with time
for all of the fields. We do not observe any radial gradient in the

development of a simplified model for the vibration analysis of lawn mowers
Abstract The vibrational behavior of vehicles is a crucial issue for the comfort, especially for the professional vehicles. This paper presents a simplified modelling approach for studying the vibrational behavior of a lawn tractor. The vibrational response of a real vehicle is analyzed by an extensive experimental modal analysis and Finite Element model (FE) simulating the modal behavior of the whole tractor. The FEM was then validated by the comparison with the experimental results and then used for identifying the components and connections effectively driving the modal response. Based on these results, a simplified Multi-Body (MB) model, able to reproduce the vibrational response of the studied lawn mower, was then setup, showing good correspondences with experimental results. General guidelines for defining effective vehicles Multi-Body modal models were also derived
A WFC3/HST view of the three stellar populations in the Globular Cluster NGC6752
Multi-band Hubble Space Telescope photometry reveals that the main sequence,
sub-giant, and the red giant branch of the globular cluster NGC6752 splits into
three main components in close analogy with the three distinct segments along
its horizontal branch stars. These triple sequences are consistent with three
stellar groups: a stellar population with a chemical composition similar to
field halo stars (population a), a population (c) with enhanced sodium and
nitrogen, depleted carbon and oxygen and enhanced helium abundance (Delta Y
~0.03), and a population (b) with an intermediate (between population a and c)
chemical composition and slightly helium enhanced (Delta Y ~0.01). These
components contain ~25% (population a), ~45% (population b), and ~30%
(population c) of the stars. No radial gradient for the relative numbers of the

Massive stellar systems: observational challenges and perspectives in the E-ELT era
We introduce the empirical framework concerning optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of crowded stellar fields. In particular, we address the impact that linear detectors and analytical PSF played in improving the accuracy and the precision of multi-band color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We focus our attention on recent findings based on deep NIR images collected with Adaptive Optics (AO) systems at the 8-10m class telescopes and discuss pros and cons of the different approaches. We also discuss the estimate of the absolute age of globular clusters using a well defined knee along the lower main sequence. We mention the role which the current AO-assisted instruments will have in addressing longstanding astrophysical problems of the Galactic center. Finally, we outline the role of first generation of E-ELT instruments upon photometry and spectroscopy of crowded stellar fields
experimental study of hydrogen embrittlement in maraging steels
Abstract This research activity aims at investigating the hydrogen embrittlement of Maraging steels in connection to real sudden failures of some of the suspension blades of the Virgo Project experimental apparatus. Some of them failed after 15 years of service in working conditions. Typically, in the Virgo detector, blades are loaded up to 50-60% of the material yield strength. For a deeper understanding of the failure, the relationship between hydrogen concentration and mechanical properties of the material, have been investigated with specimens prepared in order to simulate blade working conditions. A mechanical characterization of the material has been carried out by standard tensile testing in order to establish the effect of hydrogen content on the material strength. Further experimental activity was executed in order to characterize the fracture surface and to measure the hydrogen content. Finally, some of the failed blades have been analyzed in DICI-UNIPI laboratory. The experimental results show that the blades failure can be related with the hydrogen embrittlement phenomenon
Weak Galactic Halo--Fornax dSph Connection from RR Lyrae Stars
For the first time accurate pulsation properties of the ancient variable
stars of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) are discussed in the broad
context of galaxy formation and evolution. Homogeneous multi-band optical
photometry of spanning {\it twenty} years has allowed us to identify and
characterize more than 1400 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) in this galaxy. Roughly 70\%
are new discoveries. We investigate the period-amplitude distribution and find
that Fornax shows a lack of High Amplitude (A_V\gsim0.75 mag) Short Period
fundamental-mode RRLs (P\lsim0.48 d, HASPs). These objects occur in stellar
populations more metal-rich than [Fe/H]-1.5 and they are common in the
Galactic halo (Halo) and in globulars. This evidence suggests that old (age
older than 10 Gyr) Fornax stars are relatively metal-poor.
A detailed statistical analysis of the role of the present-day Fornax dSph in
reproducing the Halo period distribution shows that it can account for only a
few to 20\% of the Halo when combined with RRLs in massive dwarf galaxies
(Sagittarius dSph, Large Magellanic Cloud). This finding indicates that
Fornax-like systems played a minor role in building up the Halo when compared
with massive dwarfs. We also discuss the occurrence of HASPs in connection with
the luminosity and the early chemical composition of nearby dwarf galaxies. We
find that, independently of their individual star formation histories, bright
(M_V\lsim-13.5 mag) galaxies have HASPs, whereas faint ones (M_V\gsim-11
mag) do not. Interestingly enough, Fornax belongs to a luminosity range
(--11M--13.5 mag) in which the occurrence of HASPs appears to be
correlated with the early star formation and chemical enrichment of the host
