America, America!

This account was written during a four-month stay in Berkeley from May to August 2007. It was partly inspired by a diary published by Simone de Beauvoir after her four-month lecture tour to the US in 1947. We could not resist the temptation of writing a few pages about our impressions. This text is not intended as an essay about anthropological or chemical sciences. We merely tried to understand the conditions of the bubbling creativity that we have so often witnessed in Berkeley. Some of our comments are more or less voluntarily naïve, as if Voltaire's Candide had made a trip to America. Our impressions may appear a bit franchouillardes, and perhaps a trifle rude to our American hosts, whose kindness does not deserve such a harsh treatment

On toxic effects of scientific journals

The advent of online publishing greatly facilitates the dissemination of scientific results. This revolution might have led to the untimely death of many traditional publishing companies, since today's scientists are perfectly capable of writing, formatting and uploading files to appropriate websites that can be consulted by colleagues and the general public alike. They also have the intellectual resources to criticize each other and organize an anonymous peer review system. The Open Access approach appears promising in this respect, but we cannot ignore that it is fraught with editorial and economic problems. A few powerful publishing companies not only managed to survive, but also rake up considerable profits. Moreover, they succeeded in becoming influential ‘trendsetters' since they decide which papers deserve to be published. To make money, one must set novel trends, like Christian Dior or Levi's in fashion, and open new markets, for example in Asia. In doing so, the publishers tend to supplant both national and transnational funding agencies in defining science policy. In many cases, these agencies tend simply to adopt the commercial criteria defined by the journals, forever eager to improve their impact factors. It is not obvious that the publishers of scientific journals, the editorial boards that they appoint, or the people who sift through the vast numbers of papers submitted to a handful of ‘top' journals are endowed with sufficient insight to set the trends of future science. It seems even less obvious that funding agencies should blindly follow the fashion trends set by the publishers. Ethnogenèse du New Age andin : à la recherche de l’Inca global. Nous observons au Pérou l’émergence d’une culture originale à partir de deux corpus : celui des Andins, fruit d’un alliage entre la culture préhispanique et le christianisme, et celui du mouvement New Age introduit par le tourisme mystique. La fusion de ces deux matrices donne lieu à des créations rituelles qui sont ici décrites et analysées. À travers un travail ethnographique, nous avons identifié des procédés d’invention de cette nouvelle tradition. Les néo-Incas ont donné une dimension préhispanique impériale à quelques cultes indigènes. L’Indien étatique a servi de figure d’autochtonie à la nation péruvienne. Les New Agers ont repris ces représentations néo-indiennes sur lesquelles ils ont greffé leurs concepts. La mondialisation d’une tradition est ainsi présentée non pas au travers de débats théoriques sur la globalisation des cultures, mais par l’analyse de données ethnographiques.Ethnogenesis of the Andean New Age: in search of the global Inca. In Peru, we witness the emergence of an original culture that takes its roots from two matrices: the Andean culture that results from a fusion of the pre-Hispanic culture with Christianism, and the New Age movement that has been introduced with mystic tourism. The fusion of these two strands gives rise to ritual creations that we describe and analyze. Through ethnographical observations, we have identified some of the inventive procedures of this new tradition. The neo-Incas have given an imperial pre-Hispanic dimension to indigenous cults. The State Indian has offered a model of autochtony to the Peruvian nation. The New Agers movement have borrowed from neo-Indian representations and grafted their own concepts on them. In this manner, the world-wide popularization of a tradition is not introduced through some theoretical debate on the way cultures tend to dissolve in globalization, but through the analysis of ethnographic data.Etnogénesis del New Age andino: en busca del inca global. The Kinship or k-Index as an Antidote Against the Toxic Effects of h-Indices

In a bilingual paper entitled 'Bibliometrics as weapons of mass citation - La bibliometrie comme arme de citation massive',([1]) recently translated into English,([2]) we have argued that the current fashion of ranking people, papers and journals is anything but harmless. The point was forcefully supported by Richard Ernst in a post-face entitled 'The Follies of Citation Indices and Academic Ranking Lists.([3,4]) We received a surprising number of passionate responses, such as 'It's written out of my heart' (TH); 'Je soutiens cette entreprise courageuse de tout coeur' (VT); 'Impact Faktoren sind ein Marktinstrument gewisser Verlage (FS); 'II y a un combat a mener' (SB). Some thoughtful responses have been incorporated into this Essay, albeit in attenuated form. C'est l'objet de cet ouvrage, qui réunit les contributions de dix-sept spécialistes de différentes disciplines (archéologues, économistes, ethnologues et historiens) autour du thème fédérateur des phénomènes d'hybridation monétaire.
