    Colour and stellar population gradients in galaxies

    We discuss the colour, age and metallicity gradients in a wide sample of local SDSS early- and late-type galaxies. From the fitting of stellar population models we find that metallicity is the main driver of colour gradients and the age in the central regions is a dominant parameter which rules the scatter in both metallicity and age gradients. We find a consistency with independent observations and a set of simulations. From the comparison with simulations and theoretical considerations we are able to depict a general picture of a formation scenario.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     Tako-tsubo Syndrome as First Manifestation in a Case of Pheochromocytoma Developed From a Non-functional Adrenal Incidentaloma

    Abstract Background: Pheochromocytoma is a catecholamine secreting tumor that, in extremely rare cases, may develop over time from a non-functional adrenal adenoma. Catecholamine excess can lead to a kind of cardiomyopathy similar to that seen in tako-tsubo syndrome (TTS). Case report: A 69 years old female with a history of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and a non-functional right adrenal adenoma diagnosed 3 years earlier was referred to our center for further investigations. During the evaluation, she had a hypertensive crisis with chest pain, tachycardia, and diaphoresis. Suspecting an acute coronary syndrome, she underwent coronary angiography, which showed the typical features of TTS. The high 24 h-urinary metanephrines excretion and abdominal MRI findings were suggestive of pheochromocytoma. Right laparoscopic adrenalectomy was performed, with the resolution of all symptoms. Pathology findings confirmed the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. After 12 months, the patient was still asymptomatic, with the echocardiography displaying a complete recovery of the left-ventricular function. Conclusions: The development of a pheochromocytoma from an adrenal non functional adenoma is an extremely rare event, but potentially life-threating because of the catecholamine-associated cardiovascular toxicity. In particular, TTS is a form of cardiomyopathy that has been increasingly described as associated with catecholamine-secreting tumors. The exclusion of pheochromocytoma in a patient with TTS has important therapeutic implications, since the administration of β-blockers may be extremely harmful in patients with catecholamine surge in the absence of adequate α-blockage.     Workaholism, intensive smartphone use, and the sleep-wake cycle: A multiple mediation analysis

    Recent contributions have reported sleep disorders as one of the health impairment outcomes of workaholism. A possible factor affecting the sleep-wake cycle might be the intensive use of smartphones. The current study aimed to explore the role of intensive smartphone use in the relationship between workaholism and the sleep-wake cycle. Two serial multiple mediation models were tested on a sample of 418 employees, who filled self-report questionnaires measuring workaholism, use of smartphones, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness, using conditional process analysis for testing direct and indirect effects. Results supported our hypotheses regarding two serial multiple mediation models-that intensive smartphone use and poor sleep quality mediated the relationship between workaholism and daytime sleepiness, and that smartphone use and daytime sleepiness mediated the relationship between workaholism and poor quality of sleep. Although the use of a cross-sectional design and the snowball technique for collecting data can be considered as possible limitations, the current study is one of the first to document the potential detrimental role of the intensive smartphone use on the workaholism-sleep disorders relationship

    The Cepheids of NGC1866: A Precise Benchmark for the Extragalactic Distance Scale and Stellar Evolution from Modern UBVI Photometry

    We present the analysis of multiband time-series data for a sample of 24 Cepheids in the field of the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC1866. Very accurate BVI VLT photometry is combined with archival UBVI data, covering a large temporal window, to obtain precise mean magnitudes and periods with typical errors of 1-2% and of 1 ppm, respectively. These results represent the first accurate and homogeneous dataset for a substantial sample of Cepheid variables belonging to a cluster and hence sharing common distance, age and original chemical composition. Comparisons of the resulting multiband Period-Luminosity and Wesenheit relations to both empirical and theoretical results for the Large Magellanic Cloud are presented and discussed to derive the distance of the cluster and to constrain the mass-luminosity relation of the Cepheids. The adopted theoretical scenario is also tested by comparison with independent calibrations of the Cepheid Wesenheit zero point based on trigonometric parallaxes and Baade-Wesselink techniques. Our analysis suggests that a mild overshooting and/or a moderate mass loss can affect intermediate-mass stellar evolution in this cluster and gives a distance modulus of 18.50 +- 0.01 mag. The obtained V,I color-magnitude diagram is also analysed and compared with both synthetic models and theoretical isochrones for a range of ages and metallicities and for different efficiencies of core overshooting. As a result, we find that the age of NGC1866 is about 140 Myr, assuming Z = 0.008 and the mild efficiency of overshooting suggested by the comparison with the pulsation models.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted in MNRAS (2016 January 14

    Profiling of Glycan Receptors for Minute Virus of Mice in Permissive Cell Lines Towards Understanding the Mechanism of Cell Recognition

    The recognition of sialic acids by two strains of minute virus of mice (MVM), MVMp (prototype) and MVMi (immunosuppressive), is an essential requirement for successful infection. To understand the potential for recognition of different modifications of sialic acid by MVM, three types of capsids, virus-like particles, wild type empty (no DNA) capsids, and DNA packaged virions, were screened on a sialylated glycan microarray (SGM). Both viruses demonstrated a preference for binding to 9-O-methylated sialic acid derivatives, while MVMp showed additional binding to 9-O-acetylated and 9-O-lactoylated sialic acid derivatives, indicating recognition differences. The glycans recognized contained a type-2 Galβ1-4GlcNAc motif (Neu5Acα2-3Galβ1-4GlcNAc or 3′SIA-LN) and were biantennary complex-type N-glycans with the exception of one. To correlate the recognition of the 3′SIA-LN glycan motif as well as the biantennary structures to their natural expression in cell lines permissive for MVMp, MVMi, or both strains, the N- and O-glycans, and polar glycolipids present in three cell lines used for in vitro studies, A9 fibroblasts, EL4 T lymphocytes, and the SV40 transformed NB324K cells, were analyzed by MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry. The cells showed an abundance of the sialylated glycan motifs recognized by the viruses in the SGM and previous glycan microarrays supporting their role in cellular recognition by MVM. Significantly, the NB324K showed fucosylation at the non-reducing end of their biantennary glycans, suggesting that recognition of these cells is possibly mediated by the Lewis X motif as in 3′SIA-LeX identified in a previous glycan microarray screen

    Workaholism and Technostress During the COVID-19 Emergency: The Crucial Role of the Leaders on Remote Working

    Although remote working can involve positive outcomes both for employees and organizations, in the case of the sudden and forced remote working situation that came into place during the COVID-19 crisis there have also been reports of negative aspects, one of which is technostress. In this context of crisis, leadership is crucial in sustainably managing and supporting employees, especially employees with workaholic tendencies who are more prone to developing negative work and health outcomes. However, while research on the role of the positive aspects of leadership during crises does exist, the negative aspects of leadership during the COVID-19 crisis have not yet been studied. The present study aimed to explore the role of authoritarian leadership in a sample of 339 administrative university employees who worked either completely from home or from home and the workplace. The study examined the moderating effect of a manager on this relationship and the connections between workaholism and technostress through conditional process analysis. Results pointed out that high authoritarian leadership had an enhancing effect, whereas low authoritarian leadership had a protective effect on the relationship between workaholism and technostress, only in the group of complete remote workers. Thus, authoritarian leadership should be avoided and training leaders to be aware of its effect appears to be essential. Limitations, future directions for the study, and practical implications are also discussed

    Incorporation of commercially-derived antimicrobials into gelatin-based films and assessment of their antimicrobial activity and impact on physical film properties

    Four antimicrobials, namely; Articoat DLP 02 (AR), Artemix Consa 152/NL (AX), Auranta FV (AFV) and sodium octanoate (SO) were examined for their effectiveness, both before and after heat treatments, against bacterial strains Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and the microflora obtained from commercial beef steaks. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) using AR, AX, AFV and SO against these microbes were then obtained using the 96-well plate method. SO was the most effective against all bacterial strains, demonstrating the lowest MIC compared to the other antimicrobials. These antimicrobials were then successively incorporated into beef-derived gelatine films and these films were subsequently tested for structural, mechanical and barrier properties. Significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced water vapour barrier properties were determined only for antimicrobial films containing AX or SO when compared to control films. On the basis of FTIR spectra, significant changes in the structure of SO-containing films were determined when compared with control gelatin films. It was shown that active antimicrobial agents could potentially serve as commercial antimicrobial coatings for application onto conventional plastic-based food packaging
