    Spatio-temporal variability of droughts in Bolivia: 1955-2012

    In this study, the spatio-temporal variability and trends of droughts across Bolivia between 1955 and 2012 were investigated using two climate drought indices: the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), which is based on precipitation data, and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), which is based on the difference between the precipitation and the reference evapotranspiration (ETo). We found that the average drought conditions across the country showed a temporal behaviour mainly characterized by decadal variations. The spatial pattern of drought evolution showed marked differences between the Amazonian region and the Bolivian Altiplano. Both regions showed different drought periods, a lower frequency of drought variability in the Amazon region and trends towards drier conditions in the Altiplano, mainly due to a higher atmospheric water demand as a consequence of increased ETo. We also showed that inclusion of ETo, obtained from maximum and minimum temperature records, increased the spatial heterogeneity of the drought evolution in relation to the evolution observed when only precipitation droughts were considered. The SPEI, the calculation of which includes precipitation and ETo, indicated intensification in drought severity in the last years analysed relative to the pattern found when precipitation droughts alone were considered, and also indicated an increase in the magnitude and duration of drought events.     CIBERER : Spanish national network for research on rare diseases: A highly productive collaborative initiative

    Altres ajuts: Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII); Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación.CIBER (Center for Biomedical Network Research; Centro de Investigación Biomédica En Red) is a public national consortium created in 2006 under the umbrella of the Spanish National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII). This innovative research structure comprises 11 different specific areas dedicated to the main public health priorities in the National Health System. CIBERER, the thematic area of CIBER focused on rare diseases (RDs) currently consists of 75 research groups belonging to universities, research centers, and hospitals of the entire country. CIBERER's mission is to be a center prioritizing and favoring collaboration and cooperation between biomedical and clinical research groups, with special emphasis on the aspects of genetic, molecular, biochemical, and cellular research of RDs. This research is the basis for providing new tools for the diagnosis and therapy of low-prevalence diseases, in line with the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC) objectives, thus favoring translational research between the scientific environment of the laboratory and the clinical setting of health centers. In this article, we intend to review CIBERER's 15-year journey and summarize the main results obtained in terms of internationalization, scientific production, contributions toward the discovery of new therapies and novel genes associated to diseases, cooperation with patients' associations and many other topics related to RD research

    A growing methodological trend is emerging from the recognition that integrating qualitative and quantitative methods in the same study, that is, employing a mixed methods approach, can provide the necessary empirical intricacy and rigor to match the complexities of organizational phenomena. The authors describe opportunities and challenges of mixed methods research in the organizational sciences, explain how the articles offered in this Feature Topic help to advance mixed methods in our field, and offer suggestions for future work that may create additional progress

    Near-surface mean and gust wind speed in ERA5 across Sweden: towards and improved gust parametrization

    Trabajo presentado en EGU General Assembly, celebrada en modalidad virtual del 4 al 8 de mayo de 2020.Driven by the twenty-century surface air temperature rise, extreme wind events could change in their frequency and magnitude of occurrence, with drastic impacts on human and ecosystems. As a matter of fact, windstorms and extreme wind conditions contribute to more than half of the economic losses associated with natural disasters in Europe. Across Scandinavia, the occurrence of wind gust events can affect aviation security, as well as damage buildings and forests, representing severe hazards to people, properties and transport. Comprehensive extreme wind datasets and analysis can help improving our understanding of these changes and help the society to cope with these changes. Unfortunately, due to the difficulty in measuring wind gust and the lack of homogeneous and continuous datasets across Sweden, it is challenging to assess and attribute their changes. Global reanalysis products represent a potential tool for assessing changes and impact of extreme winds, only if their ability in representing observed near-surface wind statistics can be demonstrated. In this study the new ERA5 reanalysis product has been compared with hourly near-surface wind speed and gust observations across Sweden for 2013-2017. We found that ERA5 shows better agreement with both mean wind speed and gust measurements compared to the previous ERAInterim reanalysis dataset. Especially across coastal regions, ERA5 has a closer agreement with observed climate statistics. However, significant discrepancies are still found for inland and highaltitude regions. Therefore, the gust parametrization used in ERA5 is further analyzed to better understand if the adopted gust formulation matches the physical processes behind the gust occurrence. Finally, an improved formulation of the gust parametrization is developed across Sweden and further tested for Norway, which is characterized by more complex topography

    Environmental strategies and their impact on hotel performance

    This study examines the relevance of environmental management as a source of competitive advantage for hotels. The relationship between the environmental proactivity of hotels located in the province of Alicante (Spain) and their economic performance levels was studied, and three strategic groups, based on environmental proactivity, were identified: Proactive, Intermediate and Reactive. The findings show that the degree of proactivity achieved by these hotels does not strongly impact on their organisational performance. Nevertheless, performance levels increase as environmental proactivity grows
