Spacelab experiment definition study on phase transition and critical phenomena in fluids: Interim report on experimental justification

    Get PDF
Pure fluids and fluid mixtures near critical points are identified and are related to the progress of several disciplines. Consideration is given to thermodynamic properties, transport properties, and the complex nonlinear phenomena which occur when fluids undergo phase transitions in the critical region. The distinction is made between practical limits which may be extended by advances in technology and intrinsic ones which arise from the modification of fluid properties by the earth's gravitational field. The kinds of experiments near critical points which could best exploit the low gravity environment of an orbiting laboratory are identified. These include studies of the index of refraction, constant volume specific heat, and phase separation

Dielectric permittivity of eight gases measured with cross capacitors

A four-ring, toroidal cross capacitor was used to measure accurately the relative dielectric permittivity e(p, T) of He, Ar, N 2 , O 2 , CH 4 , C 2 H 6 , C 3 H 8 , and CO 2 . (e is often called the ''dielectric constant.'') The data are in the range from 0 to 50°C and, in many cases, extend up to 7 MPa. The accurate measurement of e(p, T) required a good understanding of the deformation of the gas-filled capacitors with applied pressure. This understanding was tested in two ways. , demonstrating that the four-ring cross capacitor deformed as predicted. Second, e(p, T) of argon was measured simultaneously on three isotherms using two capacitors: the four-ring capacitor, and a 16-rod cross capacitor made using different materials and a different geometry. The results for the two capacitors are completely consistent, within the specifications of the capacitance bridge. There was a small inconsistency that was equivalent to 1 × 10 −6 of the measured capacitances, or, for argon, 3 × 10 A e , where A e is the zero-density limit of the molar polarizability^-(e − 1)/ [(e+2) r]

Critical Casimir effect and wetting by helium mixtures

We have measured the contact angle of the interface of phase-separated 3^{3}He-4^{4}He mixtures against a sapphire window. We have found that this angle is finite and does not tend to zero when the temperature approaches TtT_t, the temperature of the tri-critical point. On the contrary, it increases with temperature. This behavior is a remarkable exception to what is generally observed near critical points, i.e. "critical point wetting''. We propose that it is a consequence of the "critical Casimir effect'' which leads to an effective attraction of the 3^{3}He-4^{4}He interface by the sapphire near TtT_{t}.Comment: submitted july 13 (2002), published march 20 (2003

    Coupled Fluctuations near Critical Wetting

Recent work on the complete wetting transition has emphasized the role played by the coupling of fluctuations of the order parameter at the wall and at the depinning fluid interface. Extending this approach to the wetting transition itself we predict a novel crossover effect associated with the decoupling of fluctuations as the temperature is lowered towards the transition temperature T_W. Using this we are able to reanalyse recent Monte-Carlo simulation studies and extract a value \omega(T_W)=0.8 at T_W=0.9T_C in very good agreement with long standing theoretical predictions.Comment: 4 pages, LaTex, 1 postscript figur

Progress towards an accurate determination of the Boltzmann constant by Doppler spectroscopy

In this paper, we present significant progress performed on an experiment dedicated to the determination of the Boltzmann constant, k, by accurately measuring the Doppler absorption profile of a line in a gas of ammonia at thermal equilibrium. This optical method based on the first principles of statistical mechanics is an alternative to the acoustical method which has led to the unique determination of k published by the CODATA with a relative accuracy of 1.7 ppm. We report on the first measurement of the Boltzmann constant by laser spectroscopy with a statistical uncertainty below 10 ppm, more specifically 6.4 ppm. This progress results from improvements in the detection method and in the statistical treatment of the data. In addition, we have recorded the hyperfine structure of the probed saQ(6,3) rovibrational line of ammonia by saturation spectroscopy and thus determine very precisely the induced 4.36 (2) ppm broadening of the absorption linewidth. We also show that, in our well chosen experimental conditions, saturation effects have a negligible impact on the linewidth. Finally, we draw the route to future developments for an absolute determination of with an accuracy of a few ppm.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figure

Specific Heat of Liquid Helium in Zero Gravity very near the Lambda Point

We report the details and revised analysis of an experiment to measure the specific heat of helium with subnanokelvin temperature resolution near the lambda point. The measurements were made at the vapor pressure spanning the region from 22 mK below the superfluid transition to 4 uK above. The experiment was performed in earth orbit to reduce the rounding of the transition caused by gravitationally induced pressure gradients on earth. Specific heat measurements were made deep in the asymptotic region to within 2 nK of the transition. No evidence of rounding was found to this resolution. The optimum value of the critical exponent describing the specific heat singularity was found to be a = -0.0127+ - 0.0003. This is bracketed by two recent estimates based on renormalization group techniques, but is slightly outside the range of the error of the most recent result. The ratio of the coefficients of the leading order singularity on the two sides of the transition is A+/A- =1.053+ - 0.002, which agrees well with a recent estimate. By combining the specific heat and superfluid density exponents a test of the Josephson scaling relation can be made. Excellent agreement is found based on high precision measurements of the superfluid density made elsewhere. These results represent the most precise tests of theoretical predictions for critical phenomena to date.Comment: 27 Pages, 20 Figure
