Examples given here not only exemplify the efficiency and practicality of new C−C bond formation of the enone system via palladium‐catalysed reactions but also reflect some of the revolutionary methods used for the preparation of a more complex and valuable chalcone scaffold which is known to be a privileged structure in the field of medicinal chemistry

    Physical Properties and Glycemic Index Studies of Singaraja White Rice Grown by Conventional and Organic Methods in Denpasar Bali Indonesia

    Both Singaraja white rice  grown by organic and conventional method showed similar quality and  posses glycemic index of 46.8±4.03 and 48.2±4.65 respectively. These values are lesser than the commercial Basmati rice of 50±5.8 which is in the low GI category. The scanning electron macroscopy photomicrograph of the transversal section of both  rices show the array of crystalline blocks from the central endosperm area toward the outer part. The blocks are surrounded by polyhedral crystallites of the size between 3-6 microns. The polyhedral crystalline seem to be more dominant in the conventional rice. X-ray difrractograms of the rice indicate about 24% crystallinity with amylose dihydrate exist as polymorph in the organic rice. Elemental analysis data by XRF indicate organic rice contains slightly higher Magnesium and Phosphorus. Other elements detected were K, Al, S, Cl,O, Si, Zn, Ru, Ni, Pd and Fe. However, no iron was detected in the conventional rice . On the other hand no calcium was detected in the organic  rice. Thermogravimetric study showed the solid rice is stable up to about 200°C with the loss of water molecules at about 90°C.

    Permasalahan besar yang dihadapi dalam rawatan jangkitan virus herpes manusia jenis I (Human Herpes virus type 1, HHV-1) adalah kehadiran virus mutan yang rintang ubat antivirus iaitu acyclovir. Pencarian ubatan dengan kebolehan mengatasi HHV-1 rintang-acyclovir diperlukan bagi mengatasi masalah ini. Maka, kajian ini bertujuan menentukan konfigurasi Goniothalamin (GTN) yang dipencilkan daripada Goniothalamus umbrosus seterusnya mengenalpasti kebolehannya secara in vitro merencat pencilan HHV-1 mutan yang rintang-acyclovir. Kristal yang terhasil selepas pengekstrakan bahagian akar dan batang G. umbrosus disahkan melalui GC-MS, FTIR dan NMR sebagai GTN. Kiraan puncak gandingan J (J coupling peak calculation) menunjukkan bahawa sebatian aktif ini dalam konfigurasi-cis. Sebelum ujian antivirus dilakukan, nilai kepekatan sitotoksik GTN yang membunuh 50% populasi sel Vero (CC50) ditentukan iaitu 8.747 μg/mL. Kepekatan GTN lebih rendah daripada nilai CC50 digunakan untuk penentuan kesan aktiviti antivirus. Sebanyak sebelas pencilan mutan digunakan bagi menentukan kesan aktiviti antivirus GTN dalam asai pasca-rawatan. Nilai kepekatan berkesan menurunkan 50% pembentukan plak (EC50) adalah antara 0.47 μg/mL (2.35 μM) hingga 1.42 μg/mL (6.42 μM). Nilai indeks pemilihan (SI) iaitu nisbah keberkesanan aktiviti antivirus berbanding kesitotoksikan adalah antara 6 hingga 17 yang menunjukkan bahawa GTN mempunyai potensi baik untuk bertindak sebagai agen antivirus. Kesimpulannya, GTN dalam konfigurasi cis berkesan merencat pencilan virus mutan rintang-acyclovir. Potensi tindakan tersebut penting dalam menangani kehadiran virus rintang-acyclovir terutama yang mempunyai mutasi pada timidin kinase atau polimerase DNA

    M(edda) complexes (Cu, Co, Ni, Zn) have been characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy and ESI-MS to study the species in aqueous solution. The Co complex crystallizes as the octahedral diaqua(N,N′-ethylenediaminediacetato)cobalt(II) monohydrate and its crystal structure is reported. Cu(edda) cleaves plasmid DNA in the presence of hydrogen peroxide better than Co(edda) while the Zn and Ni analogues are inactive. Partial and complete inhibition of DNA cleavage can be effected by radical scavengers and Na2H2EDTA, respectively. The cleavage efficiency of Cu(edda) varies with the concentration of the complex, pH of the buffer and the type of buffer. The difference in nucleolytic efficiency of Cu(edda) and other complexes studied can be explained by the difference in amount of OH radicals produced, as determined by a PNDA assay. ESI-MS and CD studies on the Cu(edda) complex confirms its binding to DNA and results in a non-denaturational type of conformation change
