    Development of industrial training assessment system (iTAS) 2.0: a step forward to educator 4.0

    For many years, industrial training assessment at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) is done using a paper-based system, which causes delay in entering marks, and significant cost incurred for printing, by the faculties and postage by the industries. To increase efficiency of the evaluation process, along with promoting green technologies and supporting green campus initiative, an online system named iTAS (Industrial Training Assessment System) 2.0 has been developed to allow industrial training students’ assessments to be executed online by internal (faculties) and external (industries) supervisors. iTAS 2.0 is designed as a user friendly multiplatform web-based system. Faculty and industrial supervisors complete their respective online assessment rubric in iTAS 2.0, which will then automatically calculate the industrial training marks for each student. In developing iTAS 2.0, System Development Life Cycle has been used. Implementation of iTAS 2.0 has indeed resulted in increased efficiency through significant reduction in time and cost by eliminating the amount of printing, physical transfer, and human error in calculation of marks. This effort could also raise UTHM’s UI Green Metric World University Ranking

    To realize the STEP-NC based machining system, it is necessary to perform machining feature extraction, generating machine-specific information, and creating a relationship between STEP-NC entities. A process planning system of a STEP-NC information flow that starts with constructing a machining feature from a CAD model will be developed. In this paper, a further in depth study of the implementation and adaptation of STEP-NC in manufacturing is studied. This study will help to understand how the data from CAD/CAM can be converted into STEP-NC codes and the machining process will be based on the STEP-NC codes generated

    Poket Musafir: a guide for smart muslim travelers

    Prayer (solat) is one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith and it has been stated in the hadeeth of Jaabir (may Allah be pleased with him) who said; I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say; “Between a man and shirik and kufr there stands his giving up prayer”. In other words, it is prayer that distinguished the believer from the disbeliever. Given the importance for Muslims to perform their five daily prayers even during travel, an android application, Poket Musafir was developed to guide them in performing their obligations. Poket Musafir included in its menu details on rulings regarding Jamak and Qasr (combining and shortening of prayers) during travel, calculation on distance to see whether one is eligible to perform Jamak and Qasr prayers, common Q&A faced by Muslim travellers in performing their prayers. This application also has quizzes, and can be used by school students to help them understand the topic and test their knowledge, on what they have learnt in a more dynamic way instead of static text in the textbook. Poket Musafir was developed using Android Studio, Adobe Photoshop CS6, GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) and Adobe Illustrator

    An Evaluation of Assessment Tools in Outcome-based Education: A Way Forward

    With the existing manual-based of outcome based education (OBE) systems, data complexity appears as the main problem to be solved. In this paper, a critical discussion of the manual-based system and a way forward with the online version of the OBE systems in the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (FKEE), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) have been discussed. Two assessment tools of programme learning outcomes (PLOs) as well as course learning outcomes (CLOs) have been used to measure and analyse manually both achievements of the PLOs and CLOs. However, results obtained have shown that these processes require a better system, to deal with various parameters such as different cohort of students and various courses. Obviously, the online-based version and further improvement of the manualbased system that have been proposed are expected to resolve these issues, hence it will be fruitful for the FKEEs’ OBE administrator

    Pusat Pengajian Diploma (CeDS) di Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) berhadapan dengan masalah dalam menilai pelajar yang sedang menjalani latihan industri di mana penyelia perlu menguruskan rubrik secara manual. Ini menambah kebimbangan pihak penyelaras Latihan Industri kerana kesemua penilaian pelajar melibatkan penggunaan kertas yang banyak dan ini bertentangan dengan matlamat universiti bagi mewujudkan “Pejabat Hijau”. Oleh yang demikian, reka bentuk, pembangunan dan pelaksanaan Industrial Training Assessment System yang juga dikenali sebagai iTAS telah dibuat agar lebih mesra pengguna, generik dan berasaskan web. Ini bagi memudahkan penyelia mencapai semua maklumat penting berkaitan dengan penilaian latihan industri pelajar secara lebih teratur dan cekap agar persekitaran tanpa kertas dapat diwujudkan di samping mengelakkan pembaziran kos operasi. Segala butiran pelajar yang menjalani latihan industri boleh dinilai secara dalam talian tanpa melibatkan penggunaan kertas dan pengiraan markah dilakukan secara automatik oleh sistem. Dengan ini ralat kiraan dapat dielakkan dan memudahkan lagi kerja penyelia dalam menilai pelajar di bawah seliaan masing-masing. Pembangunan iTAS adalah berdasarkan Model Air Terjun dan menggunakan perisian Adobe Macromedia Dreamweaver dan MySQL sebagai pangkalan data untuk mencapai dan menyimpan data. Satu kaji selidik telah dilakukan bagi melihat kebolehgunaan sistem yang dibangunkan. Hasilnya hampir 70% responden bersetuju bahawa sistem ini mampu meringankan beban penyelia dalam menilai pelajar yang menjalani latihan industri

    FMRepS: Pengurusan aduan kerosakan di Kolej Kediaman Perwira UTHM

    Kolej Kediaman Perwira berhadapan dengan masalah merekod aduan kerosakan dan menyimpan butiran berkenaan pelajar yang semakin bertambah. Sehingga kajian ini dilakukan, jumlah penghuni sudah melebihi 500 orang. Begitu juga dengan aduan kerosakan yang diterima oleh pihak pengurusan kolej dari penghuni juga turut meningkat. Hal ini meresahkan staf Kolej Kediaman Perwira kerana pertambahan aduan bermakna bertambahnya penggunaan kertas dan dikhuatiri meningkatkan kos pengurusan Kolej Kediaman Perwira. Oleh yang demikian, Facilities Management Report System (FMRepS) telah dibangunkan bagi mengurangkan beban pihak pengurusan kolej dan yang lebih penting ialah memudahkan dan mencepatkan proses aduan kerosakan seperti yang disasarkan matlamat utama sistem. Sistem ini merekod segala butiran pelajar dan aduan yang ingin dibuat boleh dilakukan secara dalam talian tanpa perlu ke pejabat pengurusan Kolej Kediaman Perwira. Pembangunan FMRepS adalah berdasarkan Model Air Terjun dan menggunakan perisian Adobe Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop dan MySQL sebagai pangkalan data untuk mencapai dan menyimpan data. Pemantauan telah dilakukan di Kolej Kediaman Perwira untuk melihat penggunaan kertas setelah FMRepS diimplemen di kolej. Hasil kajian menunjukkan FMRepS mampu mengurangkan kos kertas dan juga masa memproses aduan kerosakan. Ini menjadikan urusan aduan menjadi lebih mudah dan lebih efektif di Kolej Kediaman Perwira

    Pada era milenium ini, penggunaan perisian multimedia interaktif digunakan secara meluas oleh para pengajar dan pelajar di mana ianya menjadi bahan rujukan tambahan untuk sesuatu pembelajaran. Sebagai satu usaha untuk mempelbagaikan bahan pengajaran, maka satu koswer bertajuk Smart in Sirah Rasulullah telah dibangunkan sebagai satu medium pengajaran dan pembelajaran tambahan bagi murid Tahun Satu. Sirah Nabi Muhammad dipilih kerana sebagai seorang Islam, kisah Rasul terakhir ini perlu diketengahkan agar kanak-kanak di awal usia lagi akan mengagumi perjuangan Rasulullah. Bagi membantu pelajar Tahun 1 untuk memahami dan mengingati jalan cerita yang disampaikan, beberapa gabungan elemen multimedia digunakan seperti audio, grafik, teks dan animasi untuk menjadikan modul lebih efektif, menarik dan mampu merangsang minda pelajar. Penggunaan tema suasana bukit di padang pasir telah digunakan bagi memastikan antara muka koswer konsisten. Isi kandungan koswer diolah berpandukan buku teks Sirah Tahun 1 yang telah diguna pakai di sekolah-sekolah agama negeri Johor. Modul ini dibangunkan dengan menggunakan perisian Adobe Flash CS6, Adobe Photoshop CS6 dan Adobe Illustrator CS6 untuk menghasilkan modul interaktif yang lebih menarik dan efektif. Sebagai langkah penambahbaikan koswer pada masa yang akan datang, kami telah mengedarkan borang soal selidik kepada 20 responden untuk tujuan penilaian dan memberikan pendapat tentang koswer yang dibangunkan. Sebelum sesi soal selidik dilakukan, para responden telah mencuba sendiri koswer yang dibangunkan dan setelah itu mereka menjawab borang soal selidik yang merangkumi penggunaan modul interaktif serta pendapat mereka tentang koswer yang telah hasilkan. Hasil keputusan menunjukkan bahawa hampir 80% responden bersetuju bahawa koswer yang dibangunkan ini mampu dijadikan bahan rujukan tambahan bagi mata pelajaran Sirah Rasulullah bagi pelajar Tahun 1

    A framework for developing culture-based multi-modal mind games: improving social interaction skills of autistic children

    Cases of autism, a developmental disorder that disconnects individuals from their environment and people is on the rise with 30% increase being reported in Malaysia from 2008-2011. Early childhood intervention is essential in ensuring autistic children have the opportunity to develop their full potential and enabling them to contribute to society in later years. The intervention will also enhance education opportunities of such children, thus supporting the efforts of NASOM as well as the government’s “education for all aspirations”. One approach that has shown great potential in enhancing social interaction skills among autistic children is the multi-modal mind games approach. The purpose of this paper is to present a framework in designing a culture-based multimedia supported mind games for autistic children. Action research method will be adopted since the cyclic nature of the method will provide opportunity for improving existing educational practices for autistic children. Needs analysis will be conducted to determine weaknesses and strengths of the current practices in developing social interaction skills among autistic children. Parents and teachers will be interviewed and autistic children between the age of five and eight will be observed to get a comprehensive view of the existing situation.
