Book Review – Ibn Taymiyyah on Jihád and Baghy

    Get PDF
This book provides a scholarly examination of two highly controversial and widely misunderstood concepts in the contemporary world: jihād and baghy (rebellion). It approaches this topic from the perspective of one of the most influential figures of classical Islamic thought, Ibn Taymiyyah, the 7–8th (AH)/13–14th (CE) scholar. Ibn Taymiyyah, a revivalist teacher and jihadist of his own day, continues to have an impact on Islamic movements of today. The author helps us to view this medieval jurist's ideas beyond the polemical discourses of our times, while noting important themes in his thought that hold special significance for our volatile world. From the outset, Mohd Farid dispenses with the false notions that jihād is solely military or non-military, instead showing us how classical scholars, including Ibn Taymiyyah, viewed jihād as a combination of both. Similarly, many are often mistaken about what constitutes baghy and how we should understand its status and those who perform it. This book helps to clarify these crucial matters making it an essential contribution to existing literature on medieval Islamic thought. Moreover, given the way this book situates Ibn Taymiyyah within his historical context and discusses pertinent issues in our times, it is not only an important source for religious studies but also for the sociology and anthropology of knowledge

    Get PDF
This study presents the results of the computational modeling and analysis for evaluating the effect of Polyvinyl Alcohol Fiber (PV A) as an internal strengthening material to concrete beam. A concentrated load was applied to several two pin simply supported beam model. A finite element method was used. The results show that the internal PV A strengthening was able to increase the structural strength capacity of the beam. From the stress contours, the failure mechanism observed show that the strengthened concrete beam fail in the tension zone. The possible failure of the strengthened concrete maybe due to crushing of concrete at the bottom of beam. This type of failure generally, occurs when the stress exceed the tensile strength of cement mortar. Therefore, structural strength of this concrete is highly depending of the PVA

Industrial law has been the subject of as a rapid transformation as can have happened to any legal subject in recent times, and is certainly one of the most difficult areas of law in which to keep up to date. In some ways it is a curious mixture of ancient and modem, for much old laws lie behind or at the base of new statutory law, and in some cases the old law continues to exist alongside the new. Much of the industrial relations system is rooted in the past. A brief knowledge of its history and its development is indispensible for an understanding of the present situation

Suspension system plays an important role in the performance of a vehicle, especially vehicle handling and ride comfort. The objective of this project is to analyze the results in vibration of passenger car rear suspension system under various road conditions and driving maneuver. Experimental analysis was performed on the passenger car rear suspension system. The data collected by DEWESoft software was analyzed by using time domain analysis. In time domain analysis, the acceleration response of rear unsprung mass and suspension travel were determined by using post-processing method in Flexpro software. The maximum root mean square (r.m.s) acceleration of the unsprung mass was determined by using statistical analysis. In frequency domain analysis, the data was analyzed by using Fourier Spectral Analysis. The peak value of r.m.s amplitude of the unsprung mass acceleration was determined by using statistical analysis. The results were then evaluated by comparing them with different vehicle speed, road conditions and driving maneuver. From the results, it shows that the r.m.s acceleration of rear unsprung mass is increase as the vehicle speed increase, due to the excitation from the engine speed. The highest vehicle speed also produced response peaks at frequency range of 50 – 100Hz and 200 – 250Hz. The results also indicate that the bump road surface gives higher excitation to rear unsprung mass based on r.m.s acceleration value. Unpaved road surfaces give higher response peak in frequency range of 50 – 100Hz. Next, the results obtained shows that constant speed at constant radius cornering maneuver gives higher r.m.s acceleration value and higher response peak to rear unsprung mass
