The Use Of Explicitation In Multiple Persian Translations Of Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret

    Get PDF
Explicitation as a universal phenomenon in translation has been investigated by many scholars through the adoption of parallel and comparable corpora during the recent decades. Scholars, however, have noted a number of shortcomings with current approaches in the study of explicitation, such as the translators' level of proficiency and text types

Comparative effects of red and white grapes on oxidative markers and lipidemic parameters in adult hypercholesterolemic humans

    Get PDF
The present study compared the effects of consuming red versus white whole grapes on oxidative and lipidemic indices in people with hypercholesterolemia. Sixty nine patients were randomized into three groups. The two treatment groups consumed 500 g of either Condori red grapes or Shahroodi white grapes daily for 8 weeks, and the third group served as a control. Plasma glucose, triacylglycerol (TG), cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were determined by colorimetric methods at baseline and at the end of the study. In addition, the polyphenol and fiber content of the two grape varieties was measured. TBARS was reduced in both study groups compared to the control group, and the reduction was greater in the group that consumed red grapes compared to the white grapes. TAC was increased significantly in both red and white grape consuming groups compared to the control group. Total cholesterol and LDL-C were decreased in the red grape group compared to the control group. No significant changes in fasting blood glucose, TG or HDL-C were observed among the groups. The results of this study suggest that consumption of the whole fruit of red grapes has more potent anti-oxidative and hypolipidemic effects compared to the white grapes in hyperlipidemic adult humans. Hence, the whole fruit of red grapes may be an excellent fruit choice not only to prevent oxidative stress related metabolic disorders but also cholesterol related cardiovascular diseases, particularly in hyperlipidemic adult humans

The Effect of Ignoring Statistical Interactions in Regression Analyses Conducted in Epidemiologic Studies: An Example with Survival Analysis Using Cox Proportional Hazards Regression Model

    Get PDF
Objective: To demonstrate the adverse impact of ignoring statistical interactions in regression models used in epidemiologic studies. Study design and setting: Based on different scenarios that involved known values for coefficient of the interaction term in Cox regression models we generated 1000 samples of size 600 each. The simulated samples and a real life data set from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort were used to evaluate the effect of ignoring statistical interactions in these models. Results: Compared to correctly specified Cox regression models with interaction terms, misspecified models without interaction terms resulted in up to 8.95 fold bias in estimated regression coefficients. Whereas when data were generated from a perfect additive Cox proportional hazards regression model the inclusion of the interaction between the two covariates resulted in only 2% estimated bias in main effect regression coefficients estimates, but did not alter the main findings of no significant interactions. Conclusions: When the effects are synergic, the failure to account for an interaction effect could lead to bias and misinterpretation of the results, and in some instances to incorrect policy decisions. Best practices in regression analysis must include identification of interactions, including for analysis of data from epidemiologic studies

Measuring the productivity of capital in the industrial sector of Sistan and Baloochestan State, Iran

    Get PDF
This working paper strives to measure analyze and the productivity of capital in the industrial sector in the case of the State of Sistan and Baloochestan over the period 1982-2009. Three production functions (Debertin, Cobb-Douglas and Transcendental logarithm (Translog)) are estimated by relevant variables such as labor, capital and GDP. Akaike, Schwarz information criteria and LR test indicate that the Cobb-Douglas model should be preferred. In order to avoid a spurious regressing Johansen test detects a cointegration. According to this detection the cointegration term (-0.46) indicates that the deviation from long-run equilibrium is rectified gradually through a series of partial short term adjustments after or so two years. The results of this function reveal that there's been a diminishing trend in productivity of capital since 1982.So it demonstrates the lack of attention to capital productivity. Thus we can conclude that Sistan suffers from the absence of comprehensive strategy and segregation between trade and production policies

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of calorie restriction and dietary antioxidant supplementation separately or in combination on the quality and quantity of sperm in male rat. Forty male rats were randomly allocated to four groups of 10 animals each, and fed for at least 86 days with an ad libitum diet (group 1), a restricted diet (group 2), an ad libitum diet and astaxanthin, vitamin E, and vitamin C supplements (group 3), or a restricted diet with astaxanthin, vitamin E, and vitamin C supplements (group 4). At the end of the study period, sperm count and motility were determined with a hemocytometer, and differences between the groups were analyzed by analysis of variance. In addition, total antioxidant capacity and 8-epi prostaglandin F2 alpha were measured at the beginning and end of the study period with an enzymelinked immunosorbent assay method. After 86 days, a significantly higher sperm count was seen in group 4 compared to other groups. The percentage of immotile sperm was significantly decreased in groups 2, 3, and 4 in comparison to group 1. A significant increase in total antioxidant capacity was observed in group 3 (p = 0.02) and group 4 (p = 0.02) compared to groups 1 and 2. Antioxidant supplementation with or without calorie restriction had no significant effect on serum isoprostane level in any group. Astaxanthinin, combined with vitamin E, vitamin C, and calorie restriction, was able to ameliorate, in part, infertility in male rats

Introduction:  Capsular polysaccharides of pneumococci are principle antigenic constituents of vaccines against pneumococci. Enhancing the yield of capsule production decreases costs of these vaccines and increases the vaccine coverage in developing countries. In this study therefore, we aim to optimize the capsule production from serotype 19F pneumococcus in terms of the applied pneumococcal strain and environmental culture conditions.Materials and Methods:  Thirteen serotype 19F Streptococcus pneumoniae strains were screened for the capsule production in modified Hoeprich culture medium using the stains all assay. The optimal ranges of environmental culture conditions for the selected strain were determined using single factor at a time (SFAT) strategy and utilized for the design of experiments based on the response surface methodology (RSM).Results:  S. pneumoniae 82218 showed the highest capsule production, and thus used for further studies. The maximum capsule production (1.364 mg/ml) was attained under optimal conditions (pH 7.26, 35.5 ºC, 30 rpm) predicted by the RSM derived quadratic model. The capsule production under the optimal conditions increased to 1.9 mg/ml using the buffered culture medium. Conclusion:  These results are much higher than those reported for pneumococcal capsule production in published studies [1, 2] and thus can be used to design suitable systems for the serotype 19F capsule production in the vaccine manufacturing process.
