    The effects of a strengthening exercise program with EMG biofeedback to correct patellar alignment and reduce knee pain in women with patellofemoral pain syndrome

    Background and aims: EMG biofeedback as a relatively new tool in helping to relieve muscle dysfunction has been proposed. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a strengthening exercise program with electromyographical biofeedback on the alignment corrections of the patella and the knee pain in patients with patella-femoral pain syndrome. Methods: This research was a clinical trials study. 22 participants with patella-femoral pain syndrome were randomly divided into two equal groups (n=11). The first group underwent a strengthening exercise program with biofeedback electromyography. The second group also recieved a strengthening exercise program without biofeedback electromyography. Using VAS questionnaire, the knee pain was assessed. Radiography technique was also applied to evaluate the knee alignments including Sulcus, congruence and tilt angles and Q angle assessed by clinical tests. Pair t-test and Independent t-test with SPSS were used for statistical analysis. Results: The results showed that the knee pain, congruence and Q angle had significant decrease after the therapy in both groups (P<0.05). However, the patellar tilt displayed a significant decrease only in the strengthening exercise program in the biofeedback electromyography group (P<0.05). In between group comparisons, pain and Q angle reduction after strengthening exercise program with biofeedback electromyography group was significantly more than strengthening exercise program without biofeedback electromyography group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Muscular strengthening exercise with electromyographical biofeedback displayed a better treatment outcome for pain reduction and correction of knee alignment. It seems that the provision of electromyographic biofeedback be preferred in comparison with the muscular strength training method without electromyographic biofeedback by creating more motivation for performing the exercises precisely and it can be used as a supportive tool in rehabilitation

    Background: Journals are regarded as the most important media for transferring knowledge and research results, accordingly their promotion is conditioned by continuous evaluation and improvement of performance. The present study aimed to determine the status, citation analysis, and altmetric indices of journals published by Golestan University of Medical Sciences. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by a descriptive approach with scientometric and citation analysis methods in 2019. The statistical population consisted of 5 journals of Golestan University of Medical Sciences. Data collection tool was a researcher-made checklist consisting of 28. Altmetric indices of journals were also evaluated. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics; and the results were presented in diagrams and tables. Results: All the studied journals had all "publication requirements. Only one journal had the requirement, "at least half of editorial board should be outside of the publication". Moreover, 37 percent of 105 editorial board members in the under examined journals had extra-organizational affiliation and only 8 percent were from abroad. The articles of "Journal of Gorgan University of Medical Sciences” was the most-cited article regarding citation bases. Conclusions: Journals of Golestan University of Medical Sciences need to revise their structures, especially for editorial board members namely being international, having an organizational affiliation outside the university, as well as the presence of editorial board members with further research activity and background

    Does increased Nitric Oxide production and oxidative stress due to high fat diet affect cardiac function after myocardial infarction?

    Background &amp;Objectives: High fat (HF) diet by affecting the oxidative stress and nitric oxide (NO) production may lead to different effects on function of the heart after myocardial infarction (MI). In the present study we aimed to address the hypothesis that high release of NO by activated macrophages affects LV function after MI.Methods: The animals were randomly divided into four groups comprising each of 10 rats: 1) Sham; 2) MI; 3) Sham+ HF diet; 4) MI+ HF diet. Animals fed with HF diet 30 days before sham and MI surgery. MI was induced by permanent ligation of left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). Nitric oxide (NO) production of peritoneal macrophages, the concentrations of MDA in the heart and the infarct size were measured.Results: Our study indicated that HF has adverse effects on myocardium and it may increase NO production as well as oxidative stress, resulting in augmentation of infarct size.Conclusion: Our results add to our knowledge that HF diet was associated with overproduction of NO by peritoneal macrophages and ROS that lead to development of infarct size and adverse remodeling

    Evaluation of Nutritional Composition of Pure Filamentous Fungal Biomass as a Novel Ingredient for Fish Feed

    The rapid growth of aquaculture and the lack of fish meal demand new sustainable ingredients. Although fungal biomass is found to be a promising sustainable fish feed supplementation candidate, the characteristics of this protein-rich source are closely influenced by the quality of the applied growth medium. In this work, the nutritional properties of pure filamentous fungal biomass provided from the cultivation of Aspergillus oryzae, Neurospora intermedia and Rhzopus oryzae were evaluated to assess their potential as alternative novel protein sources in fish feed. In this regard, fungal biomass yields of up to 0.19 ± 0.005 (g dry biomass/g substrate glucose) were obtained during submerged cultivation of fungal strains. The pure fungal biomass acquired could contain significant amounts of protein up to 62.2 ± 1.2% (w/w). The obtained protein had a high quality with notable inclusion of essential amino acids such as lysine, arginine, methionine and threonine with comparable concentrations to those of fish meal. Fungal biomass is mainly considered as protein source, however, entitlement of 6.9 ± 0.5, 4.0 ± 0.7 and 17.2 ± 1.1% (w/w) of lipids and ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to saturated fatty acids (SFA) of 1.37:1, 1.74:1 and 1.47:1 in A. oryzae, N. intermedia and R. oryzae, respectively, signal health benefits for the fish. Considering the results, protein-rich pure fungal biomass with amino acid composition is greatly compatible with fish meal, and contains essential nutrients such as fatty acids and minerals. This pure biomass constitutes a promising sustainable alternative supplement to be introduced in fish feed industry

    Study of Corrosion and Scaling of Water Resources and Wastewater of Shahid Hashemi Nezhad Gas Refinery

    In this study, 18 surface and groundwater samples and 5 wastewater samples were analyzed to assess water recourses and wastewater quality at Shahid Hashemi Nezhad Gas Refinery region in terms of corrosion and scaling. The parameters measured were pH, EC, temperature, and concentration of major ions, including K+, Na +, Ca2+, Mg2+, SO42, Cl, HCO3- and CO32,. Majority of the water samples showed Na+- SO42- and Na+-Cl- type and face by Piper diagram. To assess corrosion and scaling of the samples, various indices were calculated including LSI, RSI, PSI, AI and S&DSI for CaCO3 deposition, and L&SI and Skillman for sulfates deposition especially CaSO4. The results showed most of the water samples had scale forming due to high hardness and alkalinity, and the wastewater samples were often corrosive and therefore, all of the samples did not have favorable quality for industrial uses. The results of hydrogeochemical studies indicated evaporation, evaporative minerals such as gypsum and anhydrite in the water flow path, carbonate formations and their dissolution were the most important parameters in controlling ionic content of the water resources

    Antibacterial Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Punica granatum Linn. Petal on Common Oral Microorganisms

    Objectives. This study aimed to assess the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Punica granatum Linn. (P. granatum) petal on Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus sobrinus, and Enterococcus faecalis. Materials and Methods. In this in vitro study, P. granatum extract was prepared using powdered petals and water-ethanol solvent. Antibacterial effect of the extract, chlorhexidine (CHX), and ampicillin was evaluated on brain heart infusion agar (BHIA) using the cup-plate method. By assessing the diameter of the growth inhibition zone, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the extract were determined for the above-mentioned bacteria. Results. Hydroalcoholic extract of P. granatum petal had inhibitory effects on the proliferation of all five bacterial strains with maximum effect on S. mutans with MIC and MBC of 3.9 mg/mL. The largest growth inhibition zone diameter belonged to S. sanguinis and the smallest to E. faecalis. Ampicillin and CHX had the greatest inhibitory effect on S. sanguinis. Conclusions. Hydroalcoholic extract of P. granatum had a significant antibacterial effect on common oral bacterial pathogens with maximum effect on S. mutans, which is the main microorganism responsible for dental plaque and caries

    Mapping Global Research in Emergency Medicine; a Bibliometric Analysis of Documents Indexed in the Web of Science Database

    Introduction:Emergency medicine is a relatively new and rapidly growing specialty, and its research monitoring is important for future policies. This study aimed to analyze the published literature related to emergency medicine, to create a documented research perspective for this field. Methods: This research is a bibliometric study that analyzes the research outputs of the subject area of emergency medicine indexed in the Web of Science database from the beginning to 2023. VOSviewer software was used to visualize and predict the trends in research on the topic. Results: The findings showed that the University of California, The Journal of Neurotrauma and Brain Injury, Elsevier, and the USA were the most prolific units in the cycle of scientific productions in the field of emergency medicine. Results showed that most scientific productions in this field fall into 6 clusters: psychological impressions, injuries caused by traumatic events and the effects of traumas on children, pathophysiology and nervous system issues and related diseases, complications of traumatic events and injuries, biomechanics and complications caused by sports injuries, and consciousness. Conclusion: In addition to interventions and clinical complications, research in the field of emergency medicine has also focused on psychological structures. So, based on various measurement indicators, the subjects of this field have been the focus of researchers' attention

    p16INK4a hypermethylation and p53, p16 and MDM2 protein expression in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tumor suppressor genes <it>p53 </it>and <it>p16</it><sup>INK4a </sup>and the proto-oncogene <it>MDM2 </it>are considered to be essential G1 cell cycle regulatory genes whose loss of function is associated with ESCC carcinogenesis. We assessed the aberrant methylation of the <it>p16 </it>gene and its impact on <it>p16</it><sup><it>INK4a </it></sup>protein expression and correlations with <it>p53 </it>and <it>MDM2 </it>protein expressions in patients with ESCC in the Golestan province of northeastern Iran in which ESCC has the highest incidence of cancer, well above the world average.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cancerous tissues and the adjacent normal tissue obtained from 50 ESCC patients were assessed with Methylation-Specific-PCR to examine the methylation status of <it>p16</it>. The expression of <it>p16</it>, <it>p53 </it>and <it>MDM2 </it>proteins was detected by immunohistochemical staining.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Abnormal expression of <it>p16 </it>and <it>p53</it>, but not <it>MDM2</it>, was significantly higher in the tumoral tissue. <it>p53 </it>was concomitantly accumulated in ESCC tumor along with <it>MDM2 </it>overexpression and <it>p16 </it>negative expression. Aberrant methylation of the <it>p16</it><sup><it>INK4a </it></sup>gene was detected in 31/50 (62%) of esophageal tumor samples, while two of the adjacent normal mucosa were methylated (P < 0.001). <it>p16</it><sup><it>INK4a </it></sup>aberrant methylation was significantly associated with decreased <it>p16 </it>protein expression (P = 0.033), as well as the overexpression of <it>p53 </it>(P = 0.020).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>p16 </it>hypermethylation is the principal mechanism of <it>p16 </it>protein underexpression and plays an important role in ESCC development. It is associated with p53 protein overexpression and may influence the accumulation of abnormally expressed proteins in <it>p53-MDM2 </it>and <it>p16-Rb </it>pathways, suggesting a possible cross-talk of the involved pathways in ESCC development.</p
