The purpose of the current study was to evaluate estrogenic activity of Nigella sativa using ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Forty OVX rats divided into five groups. N. sativa was administered orally as a supplement to chaw palate at different doses of 300, 600 and 1200 mg/kg for 21 days to OVX rats and were compared to either positive (0.2 mg/kg conjugated equine estrogen- CEE) or negative control (1 ml distilled water). Histopathological changes of the rats’ uterus such as epithelial proliferation and endometrial glandular hyperplasia were assessed as well as uterus weight and serum estradiol level. Supplementation with N. sativa resulted in a significant increase in uterine weight as compared to the OVX controls accompanied by altering the serum estrogen levels. Histopathological evaluation of the uterine section revealed changes characterized by atrophy of the uterus in the OVX controls, while the OVX rats supplemented with N. sativa showed increased endometrial response as indicated by proliferation of the endometrial glands and epithelial hyperplasia as well as epithelial proliferation and endometrial glandular hyperplasia. The effects of N. sativa were comparable to that in the CEE group. N. sativa showed the desired effects on the physical, histological and biochemical parameters of the uterine tissue in OVX rats, thereby indicating its probable beneficial role in the treatment of postmenopausal symptoms

The aim of this study was to determine the estrogenic activity of Nigella sativa (NS) by vaginal cornification assay using an ovariectomized rat model. Forty ovariectomized Sprague Dawley rats, weighting 250 to 350 g were used in the study. N. sativa powders were administered to ovariectomized rats for 21 consecutive days at dosages of 300, 600 and 1200 mg/kg respectively, and were compared with each of daily treatment with 0.2 mg/kg conjugated Equine estrogen as positive control or distilled water as negative control. Vaginal smears were taken to observe the estrogenic effect on vaginal epithelium of rats. The vaginal smear showed an atrophic pattern at baseline. The occurrence of vaginal cornification after N. sativa supplementation indicated estrogenic activity of N. sativa, but this effect was not as much as CEE. The most influence of N. sativa in vaginal cornification was observed in low dose NS that this result was in agreement with serum Estradiol level of this group. The cornified cells percentage significantly differed from control group (P<0.05). These data suggest that N. sativa possesses estrogenic function in the ovariectomized rat model which can be helpful in managing menopausal symptoms as an alternative for Hormone Replacement Therapy

In women facing menopause, end of menstrual activity is accompanied by lower levels of estrogen and gradual weight gain. Postmenopausal weight gain sounds an alarm for women’s health and may lead to hyperlipidemia, a lipid increase and glucose intolerance. These phenomena are connected to lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension, type II diabetes mellitus, arteriosclerosis and metabolic syndrome, making it essential to prevent weight gain in women. This study was conducted using an ovariectomized rat model to determine the metabolic impact of Nigella sativa in experimental menopause induced rats.Forty ovariectomized Sprague Dawley rats, weighting 250 to 350 g were used in the study and randomly allotted into one of five experimental groups. Animals were given either different doses of N. sativa (300, 600, 1200 mg/kg/day) as treatment groups or distilled water (1 ml) and conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) (200 μg/kg/day) by intra-gastric gavage as negative and positive control group respectively for 21 days. Food and water intake were measured daily and body weight and biochemical parameters were measured at baseline, 11th day and at the end of experiment. The treatment groups showed significant (P < 0.05) improvement with reference to daily body weight gain, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and blood glucose (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences between groups in serum triglyceride concentration. These results suggested that treatment with N. sativa exert a therapeutic and protective effect by modifying weight gain, improving lipid profile and blood glucose as well as hormonal level which is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome during menopause

Performance and emission evaluations of a prototype stepped-piston engine using carburetor and direct fuel-injection systems

Two-stroke engines have been used for sometimes in automotive and stationary applications since early 20th century. The advantages of two-stroke engines are obvious, i.e., lighter, simpler and less expensive to manufacture. Technically, two-stroke engines have the potential to pack almost twice the power into the same space because there are twice as many power strokes per revolution. The combination of lightweight and twice the power gives two-stroke engines a great power-to-weight ratio compared to many four stroke engine designs. However due to the short-circuiting process of the fuel before combustion, this has resulted in deterioration in overall performances especially poor combustion efficiency and high white smoke emission problem. Coupled with the improvement in the four-stroke engine technology, the former has overcome the latter in being the choice for mobile platform applications. Due to high fuel cost and the need to explore the use of other fuel sources, notably gaseous fuels, a number of enthusiasts and engine developers have revisited the two-stroke engine design. Fuels such as hydrogen and methane are said to be ideal for use with the incorporation of the some new features (Goldsborough and Blaringan, 2003). An engine design and development program was initiated at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in year 2003 to develop local R&D capabilities in small power-train engineering. The exercise evolved around the development of an air-cooled single cylinder of stepped-piston engine concept. The term “stepped piston” refers to the conventional piston having compounded with a larger diameter section at the rear section of its geometry. The changes to the original design were made as the research group feels that there are rooms for improvements. In addition to this, the modifications will infuse other innovative scope of work from design to product testing activities (Hooper, 1985).This program, eventually leads to the incorporation of features, is expected to enhance performance of the prototype and subsequently exhaust emission. This is in anticipation of producing a working prototype for multiple applications namely stationary and automotive. The gasoline stepped-piston engine is a relatively new design concept for small mobile power plants. It is an engine, operating on a two-stroke cycle but is infused with four-stroke engine features. It has a build-in supercharger mechanism (by virtue of the extended flange) that improves the scavenging process thus improve combustion efficiency. Due to these operating characteristics, the engine has all the attributes of a low emission, high-efficiency power plant that eliminates many of the major weaknesses associated with the Otto four-stroke engine and with modern two-stroke engines

This study was conducted to examine the vulnerability of Malaysian children towards online sexual grooming by ascertaining the level of vulnerability and the relationships with social media profiles and demographical factors. To achieve the objectives of this study, a quantitative method using a cross-sectional research design with the aid of electronic questionnaire via Google Form was used to gather the data. A total of 205 Malaysian children from the age of 10 to 17 years old participated in this study with their parents’ consent. Based on the analyses of the items, it was found that each child was vulnerable towards sexual grooming at different levels. This study also found that the frequency of social media usage was directly correlated with online sexual grooming vulnerability (r = 0.14, p = 0.05) and age of the respondents (r = 0.20, p = 0.006). Children with more social media accounts were also found to be more vulnerable towards online sexual grooming compared to those with lower number of social media accounts (F (2, 191) = 7.30, p = 0.001). Findings also revealed that there was no significant difference on online sexual grooming vulnerability in terms of gender (t (191) = -0.39, p = 0.149). As a conclusion, this study provide in-depth exposure related to online sexual grooming vulnerability to public as well as the urgent need for proactive prevention efforts to curb child sexual related offenses

    Get PDF
The study aims to investigate the impact of ownership structure on corporate voluntary disclosure in the listed companies of Bangladesh. While many studies on the impact of ownership structure on voluntary disclosure have looked at developed and developing countries, few studies have been carried out in a transition economy. Using a three-step relative voluntary disclosure index, the study applies a multivariate analysis on the cross-sectional data for the year 2018. The findings indicate that the quality of voluntary disclosure in transition economy is still below average but has improved compared to findings from the previous literature. We found a significant inverse relationship between corporate voluntary disclosure and public ownership, while no significant relationships between voluntary disclosure and institutional ownership, director ownership, and foreign ownership have been found. The empirical findings of the study will provide evidence to promote the voluntary disclosure characterized by the ownership structures. The findings have important implications for both local and foreign investors as they make their investment decisions especially related to a transition economy. Besides, the findings will assist, not only the corporate executives in rearranging their reporting paradigm, but also the regulators and governments in similar transition economy in adopting and formulating their corporate policies and strategies

This concept paper aims at exploring the interrelationship among the corporate voluntary reporting, the corporate sustainable reporting and the transition economy from the literatures and frameworks. At this juncture, transition economy refers the economy especially, the transformation of least developing economy to the developing economy as per the criteria of United Nations. Thus, the context of Bangladesh has been used as a ground for the study. The study explores the affiliation among corporate voluntary reporting, corporate sustainable reporting and transition economy from their respective literature and frameworks. From the literature of the corporate voluntary reporting, various dimensions of corporate disclosures have been considered, while the dimensions of sustainability reporting have been considered as per the consolidated set of global reporting index, published by Global Sustainability Standards Boards. In addition, components of transition economy have been considered on the basis of the guideline of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The similitudes of these three concepts and their consequences are determined on the basis of the literature and frameworks. It is found that the core concepts of corporate voluntary reporting, corporate sustainable reporting and the transition economy are similar, and they are intermingled to each other. We have found that the dimensions of corporate voluntary reporting are the initiation of sustainability reporting that leads a transition economy to gain its status of being a developing economy. The findings of the study imply that the transition economy like Bangladesh has to put more focus on corporate engagement in transforming its economy to the developing economy. As the developing economy is based on trade rather than aid, the government of the country should design their corporate strategies and policies in such a way that leads the country to have a sustainable development. In addition, the findings may also encourage the corporate people to disclose more information regarding sustainability issues. Moreover, the findings may assist the United Nation to consider and reconsider their criteria of graduating any country from one level of economy to another. Finally, the findings can also open the avenue to the academicians to explore the extent of corporate reporting on transition economy.peer-reviewe

Possible impact of the latest international standard of auditing 570 on the rate of going concern opinion issuance in Malaysia

The problem that Malaysian auditors do not issue going concern opinion (GC opinion) to seriously financially distressed companies is still a pressing issue. The latest International Standards on Auditing 570 Going Concern (ISA 570) has been released and made effective in Malaysia starting from 15th December 2016. It is reasonable to expect that the new ISA 570 (2016) could at least reduce the incidence of Malaysian auditors do not want to issue GC opinion to financially distress companies. Overall, we are in the opinion that there is no strong ground to expect the new ISA (2016) can reduce the problem of Malaysian auditor do not issue GC opinion to a very large percentage of seriously financially distress companies. This is because there is no new stricter measure has been introduced in the latest ISA 570 (2016). However, Malaysian policy makers and standard setters still have at least four measures if they want to improve the rate and practice of GC opinion issuance in this country. Researchers on the other hand should examine the effectiveness of the new ISA 570 (2016), at least
