Quality improvement and accreditation system (QIAS) instrument was developed to determine the quality management practices level in childcare centers in Malaysia. This study was conducted in Kedah, Penang, and Kelantan to intricate the reliability and validity of the instrument. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and item reliability analysis have been used to measure the level of reliability and authenticity of the questionnaires. Further, inter-rater reliability (IRR) test was used to obtain expert confirmation of the reliability, validity and credibility of the instrument. All the seven constructs possessed high reliability index value between 0.87–0.92. Similarly, EFA analysis showed that there are seven dimensions exist in the QIAS instrument with factor loading ranged from 0.64–0.88. The findings also showed that the variance explained in the data is 64.46% with Eigenvalue more than 1. These results reflecting that all the item are accepted with a high verification. In addition, a very high reliability coefficient value, α=0.93 and inter-rater reliability of 91% indicated a high level of agreement and reliability among field evaluators. The results proved that this QIAS instrument had high validity and reliability and was capable to measure the quality management practices level in Malaysian childcare center

    Get PDF
The writing of lab reportsis part and parcel of Chemistry in higher institutions around the world, withalmost similar formats and procedures. This paper looks at the practice ofwriting lab reports in Chemistry for two cohorts of the pre-universityprogramme, as well as four cohorts of the first and second years of the Bachelorof Pharmacy programme. The study also compares lab reports written by studentsin the respective courses to investigate the skills and knowledge obtained bystudents, and the value of assessment marks given on students’ reports. Theeffectiveness of the lab report in contributing to their knowledge during thefinal exam is also explored. Initial findings showed that lab reports forundergraduate Pharmacy programme can become redundant with the existence of thelab manual, hence questioning the validity of the assessment marks. Allexperiments tested theories with generally known results which are explained intextbooks and/ or on the Internet, which disputes the need of a lab report.Additionally, students found questions reflecting higher levels of Bloom’staxonomy more difficult to handle, with an added challenge to complete the Discussionsection of the lab report, despite sufficient discussions and lectures. Thestudy ends with suggestions for alternative methods of writing lab reports – torestructure, revise and improve

A study has been conducted to investigate the factors that impacted the outcomes of teaching and learning of Tamadun Islam dan Tamadun Asia (TITAS) course among first year undergraduate students of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). This is part of a larger study that looks at the impact of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) initiative of Ministry of Education Malaysia of four pilot courses offered during the first semester of 2014/2015 academic session. A total of 158 students enrolled in TITAS course responded to the 37 items-questionnaire. The respondents consist of male (15.1 %) and female (84.8 %) and majority of them (86.7 %) are competent in ICT. A factorial analysis was conducted to give patterns and structures to the data and provide a meaningful interpretation to the variables influencing the outcomes of the teaching and learning. The analysis revealed three components that explained a total of 56.80 % of the variance. The first factor is the design of the learning activities (39.80 % of the variance) followed by the access to the learning materials (11.78 % of the variance) and the third factor can be attributed to curriculum compliance of learning course (5.21 % of the variance). The significant of the study is that it revealed of the importance of the design of learning activities for the successful implementation and delivery of MOOC. Equally important is the seamless access to the learning materials. Detailed discussion on these two factors will be put forward and as well as the appropriate interventions within the whole MOOC implementation framework

    Get PDF
A simple and rapid microextraction method termed as ultrasound-assisted surfactant enhanced emulsification microextraction (UASEME) was developed for the determination of fluoranthene (FLU) and phenanthrene (PHE) in aqueous samples followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Six important parameters, that affect the extraction efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were evaluated and the results were as follows; extraction solvent (toluene), volume of extraction solvent (30 μL), surfactant (Tween 20), volume of surfactant (15 μL), extraction time (2 minutes) and with no salt addition. Under the optimum conditions, the method showed good linearity over the concentration range from 1 – 1000 μg L- 1 with correlation coefficients (R² ≥ 0.9932), acceptable limits of detection (0.3 μg L- 1) and limits of quantification (1.0 μg L- 1) for both analytes. Good relative recovery values, in the range of 91.75 – 104.1%, were obtained for tap water samples. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 1.62 – 10.32% (n = 3). The proposed method was applied for the determination of FLU and PHE in tap water and sugarcane juices
