Financial literacy and risk tolerance towards saving and investment: a case study in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Innovation in the financial market has provided more flexible choices of financial products and services to the consumers. Financial products and services are becoming more complex and not easily comprehendible by many consumers. Due to this, consumers with low financial literacy (FL) may face difficulties to make informed decisions on their savings and investments. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the level of financial literary and its relationship with risk tolerance (RT) towards savings and investments in the context of Malaysia. A total of 172 respondents have been selected using convenience sampling method through online and manual survey. Data were analysed descriptively and statistically using nonparametric techniques, which include Chi-square and Spearman’s Rank Correlation to examine the relationship between variables studied. The results suggest that the overall FL in Malaysia is at moderate level. The study also found that overall FL has a positive significant relationship with the level of RT towards saving and investment. More specific analysis, however, found that only advance FL has a relationship with RT levels. Meanwhile, basic FL was not correlated with the level of respondents’ RT

Criminalising lesbian sexual conducts in Malaysia / Nur Ilmi Syakila Mazalan … [et al.]

The purpose of the research paper is to address the issue of lesbian sexual conducts that has become prevalent in Malaysia nowadays. This research is important since it is aimed to fill in the lacuna in our local law in regulating the lesbian sexual conduct in Malaysia. It is also aimed to reduce the issues of lesbianism in our country. Our main argument is that, since there is no law to regulate the lesbian sexual conducts in our Civil Penal Code (Act 574), the issue such as discrimination will arise since the Syariah law criminalise lesbianism between Muslims women, but no such law exist in our Penal Code to criminalise the issue at hand. This research paper is accomplished by several methods, which consisted of an interview with a Syariah lawyer and a questionnaire that was distributed to 100 students in the Faculty of Law UiTM Shah Alam. From the research itself, we found that people do aware of the existence of lesbianism in the country and most of the respondents to the questionnaire that we had distributed do agree that necessary amendment to the Penal Code should be made to the Penal Code in order to have one civil law to regulate the lesbians sexual conduct. Therefore, the abovementioned argument is supported by the findings of the research itself

Moving towards sustainable human capital development for Malaysian automotive industry

This paper presents the efforts taken to have sustainable human capital development for the automotive industry in Malaysia by Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI). The efforts must be driven by industry and it should consider the technology trends, market demand and government policy. MAI as a focal point for the automotive industry should create a platform for educators and industry players to come together to discuss the way forward in human capital development. Continual learning should be encouraged for the existing workers in the automotive industry to maintain their productivity and competitiveness

An integration of game-based learning in a classroom: an overview (2016 - 2021)

Games are increasingly becoming common in learning environments, and to match the requirements of developing a course as a game, a variety of technologies have been developed. Besides education, game-based learning has been popular in other settings, including professional training and social media. By introducing gaming elements as a training method, game-based learning platforms will boost students’ engagement, motivation, and productivity. Game-based learning is more than just making games for students to play on the surface; it is also about establishing learning activities that gradually teach subjects and lead users to achieve goals. This paper reviews the two research elements: the instruments used and disciplines done by 21 researchers on the game-based learning approach. The findings show that most studies have remarkable results in developing the game-based learning method. Generally, game-based learning in education strikes the perfect balance between subject matter and gameplay and the students’ capacity to retain and apply that knowledge in real life. Nevertheless, more research in game-based learning qualities and elements is required to provide extensive knowledge on the adaptability of current technological systems

SLC17A3 rs9379800 and Ischemic Stroke Susceptibility at the Northern Region of Malaysia

Objectives: The relationships of Paired Like Homeodomain 2 (PITX2), Ninjurin 2 (NINJ2), TWIST-Related Protein 1 (TWIST1), Ras Interacting Protein 1 (Rasip1), Solute Carrier Family 17 Member 3 (SLC17A3), Methylmalonyl Co-A Mutase (MUT) and Fer3 Like BHLH Transcription Factor (FERD3L) polymorphisms and gene expression with ischemic stroke have yet to be determined in Malaysia. Hence, this study aimed to explore the associations of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and gene expression with ischemic stroke risk among population who resided at the Northern region of Malaysia. Materials and methods: Study subjects including 216 ischemic stroke patients and 203 healthy controls were recruited upon obtaining ethical clearance. SNP genotyping was performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assays. Gene expression levels were quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction assays. Statistical and genetic analyses were conducted with SPSS version 22.2, PLINK version 1.07 and multifactor dimensionality reduction software. Results: Study subjects with G allele, CG or GG genotypes of SLC17A3 rs9379800 demonstrated increased risk of ischemic stroke with the odds ratios ranging from 1.76-fold to 3.14-fold (p<0.05). When stratified study subjects according to the ethnicity, SLC17A3 rs9379800 G allele and CG genotype contributed to 2.14- and 2.96-fold of ischemic stroke risk among Malay population significantly, in the multivariate analysis (p<0.05). However, no significant associations were observed for PITX2, NINJ2, TWIST1, Rasip1, and MUT polymorphisms with ischemic stroke risk in the multivariate analysis for the pooled cases and controls as well as when stratified them according to the ethnicity. Lower mRNA expression levels of Rasip1, SLC17A3, MUT and FERD3L were observed among cases (p<0.05). After FDR adjustment, the mRNA level of SLC17A3 remained significantly associated with ischemic stroke among Malay population (q=0.034). Conclusion: In conclusion, this study suggests that SLC17A3 rs9379800 polymorphism and its gene expression contribute to significant ischemic stroke risk among Malaysian population, particularly the Malay who resided at the Northern Region of the country. Our findings can provide useful information for the future diagnosis, management and treatment of ischemic stroke patients.</p
