Syntax for free: representing syntax with binding using parametricity
We show that, in a parametric model of polymorphism, the type ââα.â((αâââα)âââα)âââ(αâââαâââα)âââα is isomorphic to closed de Bruijn terms. That is, the type of closed higher-order abstract syntax terms is isomorphic to a concrete representation. To demonstrate the proof we have constructed a model of parametric polymorphism inside the Coq proof assistant. The proof of the theorem requires parametricity over Kripke relations. We also investigate some variants of this representation
The treatment of skin ulcers in patients with systemic sclerosis
Systemic Sclerosis (Ssc) is a complex disease of the connective tissue, characterized by progressive thickening and fibrosis of the skin and the internal organs and by diffused damage of the microvascular system. The fibrosis ones of the skin associated to the characteristic vascular alterations lead to the genesis of ulcers, more or less extended, often multiple, peripheral localization, chronic course, painful, able to influence patient's quality of life. Indeed, immunity reactivity, the thinning and the loss of elasticity of the skin, the peripheral neurological damage and the eventual drug assumption that can reduce regenerative/reparative abilities, can easy chronicizzate an ulcer and become infected complicating still more the patient disease, rendering more difficult the cure often, ulcer evolves to gangrene, and in some cases, in amputation too. For all these reasons, we have begun to study ulcers therapy (local and systemic), considering this activity it leave integrating of the charitable distance of the sclerodermico patient, putting to point on strategy both diagnostic and therapeutic, but above all with the primary scope, if possible, is to prevent ulcers, in contrary case, to alleviate the pain and to render the quality of the life of the patient better
Is attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder among men associated with initiation or escalation of substance use at 15-month follow-up? A longitudinal study involving young Swiss men.
Young adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) show higher substance use disorder (SUD) prevalence relative to non-ADHD controls; few longitudinal studies have examined the course of substance use with reference to conduct disorder (CD). We compared initiation and escalation of substance use at 15-month follow-up in men screened positive or negative for ADHD (ADHD(+) versus ADHD(-) ), controlling for CD presence in early adolescence.
Participants were recruited during August 2010 and November 2011 from the census of all young men who have to pass mandatory army conscription from three of six Swiss Army recruitment centres. A two-wave data collection was performed via questionnaires at baseline and 15-month follow-up as a part of the longitudinal Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors.
Recruitment centres in Lausanne, Windisch and Mels, responsible for 21 cantons in German- and French-speaking areas of Switzerland.
Consecutive sample of 5103 male Swiss Army conscripts who provided informed consent and responded to questionnaires at baseline and 15-month follow-up. Their mean age was 20.0 (standard deviationâ=â1.21) years at baseline.
ADHD and CD were assessed using the adult ADHD Self-Report Scale and the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview Plus, respectively, at baseline, and substance use was measured via self-administered substance use questionnaires at baseline and follow-up.
Compared with the ADHD(-) group, the ADHD(+) group (nâ=â215, 4.2%) showed heavier baseline substance use and increased likelihood of alcohol (Ï(2) â=â53.96; Pâ<â0.001), tobacco (Ï(2) â=â21.73; Pâ<â0.001) and cannabis use disorders (Ï(2) â=â48.43; Pâ<â0.001). The extent of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis use in the two groups remained stable from baseline to follow-up (no escalation). The ADHD(+) group was more likely to initiate substance use compared with the ADHD(-) group (higher initiation rates), particularly with amphetamines [odds ratio (OR)â=â3.81; 95% confidence interval (CI)â=â2.20-6.60; Pâ<â0.001] and non-medical use of ADHD medication (ORâ=â4.45; 95% CIâ=â2.06-9.60; Pâ<â0.001). CD was associated with initiation of substance use but did not mediate the associations between ADHD and substance use, revealing that the impact of ADHD on substance use was independent of CD.
For men in their early 20s, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a risk factor for continued heavier but not escalating use of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis when already consuming these substances, compared with young men with no ADHD. It is also a risk factor for initiating the use of cannabis, stimulants, hallucinogens and sedatives, independent of conduct disorder in early adolescence
Kripke Semantics for Martin-L\"of's Extensional Type Theory
It is well-known that simple type theory is complete with respect to
non-standard set-valued models. Completeness for standard models only holds
with respect to certain extended classes of models, e.g., the class of
cartesian closed categories. Similarly, dependent type theory is complete for
locally cartesian closed categories. However, it is usually difficult to
establish the coherence of interpretations of dependent type theory, i.e., to
show that the interpretations of equal expressions are indeed equal. Several
classes of models have been used to remedy this problem. We contribute to this
investigation by giving a semantics that is standard, coherent, and
sufficiently general for completeness while remaining relatively easy to
compute with. Our models interpret types of Martin-L\"of's extensional
dependent type theory as sets indexed over posets or, equivalently, as
fibrations over posets. This semantics can be seen as a generalization to
dependent type theory of the interpretation of intuitionistic first-order logic
in Kripke models. This yields a simple coherent model theory, with respect to
which simple and dependent type theory are sound and complete
Right ventricular function in AL amyloidosis: characteristics and prognostic implication
AIM: The importance of right ventricle (RV) dysfunction in AL amyloidosis has been underestimated. This study was designed to comprehensively evaluate RV function and its prognostic role in patients with AL amyloidosis with and without echocardiographic evidence of cardiac involvement. METHOD AND RESULTS: Fifty-two biopsy-proven AL amyloidosis patients underwent a thorough echocardiographic evaluation. Twenty-seven patients (CA) met the international echocardiographic criteria for cardiac involvement [left ventricular (LV) wall thickness >/= 12 mm] and 25 patients had no cardiac amyloidosis features (NCA). Patients were compared with a sex- age-matched control group. Patients and controls underwent traditional, tissue Doppler (TDI), speckle-tracking left and RV echocardiographic evaluation. No difference was observed between groups in RV diastolic diameter, whereas CA patients showed increased RV free wall thickness (P< 0.0001). Compared with controls and NCA patients, traditional echocardiography, TDI, and speckle-tracking evaluation detected significantly (P< 0.0001) depressed RV longitudinal systolic function in CA patients. No difference was observed between groups at Doppler diastolic evaluation, whereas at tricuspidal annulus TDI analysis, CA subject showed significantly lower E' and A' values with increased E/E' ratio (P< 0.0001). Over a 19 months median follow-up period, 18 patients died. Cox multivariate analysis showed that N-terminal pro-Brain natriuretic peptide and RV longitudinal strain were the strongest death predictor. CONCLUSION: Our data show that in patients with AL amyloidosis, RV involvement develops later than LV amyloid deposition but when it occurs, prognosis dramatically worsens. Moreover RV longitudinal strain was the only echocardiographic predictor of prognosis. We suggest that RV function analysis should be performed routinely as a part of echocardiographic evaluation in these patients
Coeffects: Unified static analysis of context-dependence
Monadic effect systems provide a unified way of tracking effects of computations, but there is no unified mechanism for tracking how computations rely on the environment in which they are executed. This is becoming an important problem for modern software â we need to track where distributed computations run, which resources a program uses and how they use other capabilities of the environment.
We consider three examples of context-dependence analysis: liveness analysis, tracking the use of implicit parameters (similar to tracking of resource usage in distributed computation), and calculating caching requirements for dataflow programs. Informed by these cases, we present a unified calculus for tracking context dependence in functional languages together with a categorical semantics based on indexed comonads. We believe that indexed comonads are the right foundation for constructing context-aware languages and type systems and that following an approach akin to monads can lead to a widespread use of the concept
Dual-readout Calorimetry
The RD52 Project at CERN is a pure instrumentation experiment whose goal is
to understand the fundamental limitations to hadronic energy resolution, and
other aspects of energy measurement, in high energy calorimeters. We have found
that dual-readout calorimetry provides heretofore unprecedented information
event-by-event for energy resolution, linearity of response, ease and
robustness of calibration, fidelity of data, and particle identification,
including energy lost to binding energy in nuclear break-up. We believe that
hadronic energy resolutions of {\sigma}/E 1 - 2% are within reach for
dual-readout calorimeters, enabling for the first time comparable measurement
preci- sions on electrons, photons, muons, and quarks (jets). We briefly
describe our current progress and near-term future plans. Complete information
on all aspects of our work is available at the RD52 website

Towards Physical Hybrid Systems
Some hybrid systems models are unsafe for mathematically correct but
physically unrealistic reasons. For example, mathematical models can classify a
system as being unsafe on a set that is too small to have physical importance.
In particular, differences in measure zero sets in models of cyber-physical
systems (CPS) have significant mathematical impact on the mathematical safety
of these models even though differences on measure zero sets have no tangible
physical effect in a real system. We develop the concept of "physical hybrid
systems" (PHS) to help reunite mathematical models with physical reality. We
modify a hybrid systems logic (differential temporal dynamic logic) by adding a
first-class operator to elide distinctions on measure zero sets of time within
CPS models. This approach facilitates modeling since it admits the verification
of a wider class of models, including some physically realistic models that
would otherwise be classified as mathematically unsafe. We also develop a proof
calculus to help with the verification of PHS.Comment: CADE 201
In situ observations on the dentition and oral cavity of the Neanderthal skeleton from Altamura (Italy)
The Neanderthal specimen from Lamalunga Cave, near Altamura (Apulia, Italy), was discovered during a speleological survey in 1993. The specimen is one of the most complete fossil hominins in Europe and its state of preservation is exceptional, although it is stuck in calcareous concretions and the bones are mostly covered by calcite depositions. Nevertheless, it is possible to carry out some observations on craniodental features that have not previously been described. In this work, we present an account of the oral cavity, made possible by the use of a videoscope, which allowed us to reach some hidden parts of the mandible and palate. This is the first detailed overview of the teeth and maxillary bones of the Neanderthal skeleton from Altamura. The dentition is almost complete. However, two teeth (upper right P3 and upper left M1) were lost ante mortem and four teeth (lower right I1 and P3 and lower left I1 and I2) were lost most probably post mortem. Dental wear is marked. The erupted M3s and the inversion of the compensating curve of Wilson in the M1s and M2s but not in the M3s suggest that the individual is fully adult, but not old. Although most of the teeth have their roots exposed for several millimeters, the periodontal bone appears to be in good condition overall, except in correspondence of the two ante-mortem tooth losses. X-rays of the anterior teeth show a periapical lesion, probably linked to the advanced dental wear. We also observed a weak expression of taurodontism in the posterior dentition and the presence of a retromolar space, features consistent with an attribution to the Neanderthal hypodigm; this attribution is also supported by aspects of the cranial morphology, the morphometric analysis of the scapula and preliminary mtDNA data. There is also a well-developed palatine torus, to the best of our knowledge a feature not previously described in Neanderthals
