    Fast and Robust Small Infrared Target Detection Using Absolute Directional Mean Difference Algorithm

    Infrared small target detection in an infrared search and track (IRST) system is a challenging task. This situation becomes more complicated when high gray-intensity structural backgrounds appear in the field of view (FoV) of the infrared seeker. While the majority of the infrared small target detection algorithms neglect directional information, in this paper, a directional approach is presented to suppress structural backgrounds and develop a more effective detection algorithm. To this end, a similar concept to the average absolute gray difference (AAGD) is utilized to construct a novel directional small target detection algorithm called absolute directional mean difference (ADMD). Also, an efficient implementation procedure is presented for the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm effectively enhances the target area and eliminates background clutter. Simulation results on real infrared images prove the significant effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.Comment: The Final version (Accepted in Signal Processing journal

    Abnormal Hippocampal Activation In Freely Behaving Mice Deficient For The Vesicular Acetylcholine Transporter

    Acetylcholine (Ach) has a fundamental role in cortical activation. The activation of the hippocampus, a cortex implicated in cognitive and sensorimotor functions, is characterized by an increase in power and frequency of oscillations in the theta (4-10 Hz) and gamma (30-100 Hz) frequency range. We studied hippocampal activation in two mutant mouse lines with deficiency in cholinergic functionality: VAChT KDHET (HET), and VAChTNkx2.1-Cre-flox/flox (KO). We hypothesized that the mutant mice, relative to wild-type (WT) mice, will manifest abnormal theta and gamma oscillations during different behaviors, and in response to muscarinic cholinergic antagonist scopolamine hydrochloride and to the NMDA receptor glutamatergic antagonist CPP. Local field potentials (LFPs) were recorded from CA1 stratum radiatum in behaving WT and mutant mice before and after injection of drugs. Immobile theta power decreased in the order of WT, HET, and KO. Injection of scopolamine abolished the awake-immobility theta in WT and KO mice, but a theta peak remained in the HET mutant mice. Injection of CPP abolished the awake-immobility theta in HET mice but not in WT and KO mice. Our data suggests that acetylcholine is critical for immobile theta power. The presence of a scopolamine-resistant and CPP-sensitive theta rhythm during awake-immobility in HET mice is a novel finding, since immobility-associated theta rhythm was found to be scopolamine (or atropine) sensitive in WT mice and other laboratory animals. The compensatory changes that activate a scopolamine-resistant, presumably non-cholinergic, theta rhythm during immobility in HET mice remain to be identified

    Modeling alcohol use disorder severity: An integrative structural equation modeling approach

    Background: Alcohol dependence is a complex psychological disorder whose phenomenology changes as the disorder progresses. Neuroscience has provided a variety of theories and evidence for the development, maintenance, and severity of addiction; however, clinically, it has been difficult to evaluate alcohol use disorder (AUD) severity.Objective: This study seeks to evaluate and validate a data-driven approach to capturing alcohol severity in a community sample.Method: Participants were non-treatment seeking problem drinkers (n = 283). A structural equation modeling approach was used to (a) verify the latent factor structure of the indices of AUD severity; and (b) test the relationship between the AUD severity factor and measures of alcohol use, affective symptoms, and motivation to change drinking.Results: The model was found to fit well, with all chosen indices of AUD severity loading significantly and positively onto the severity factor. In addition, the paths from the alcohol use, motivation, and affective factors accounted for 68% of the variance in AUD severity. Greater AUD severity was associated with greater alcohol use, increased affective symptoms, and higher motivation to change.Conclusion: Unlike the categorical diagnostic criteria, the AUD severity factor is comprised of multiple quantitative dimensions of impairment observed across the progression of the disorder. The AUD severity factor was validated by testing it in relation to other outcomes such as alcohol use, affective symptoms, and motivation for change. Clinically, this approach to AUD severity can be used to inform treatment planning and ultimately to improve outcomes. © 2013 Moallem, Courtney, Bacio and Ray

    Using swarm intelligence for distributed job scheduling on the grid

    With the rapid growth of data and computational needs, distributed systems and computational Grids are gaining more and more attention. Grids are playing an important and growing role in today networks. The huge amount of computations a Grid can fulfill in a specific time cannot be done by the best super computers. However, Grid performance can still be improved by making sure all the resources available in the Grid are utilized by a good load balancing algorithm. The purpose of such algorithms is to make sure all nodes are equally involved in Grid computations. This research proposes two new distributed swarm intelligence inspired load balancing algorithms. One is based on ant colony optimization and is called AntZ, the other one is based on particle swarm optimization and is called ParticleZ. Distributed load balancing does not incorporate a single point of failure in the system. In the AntZ algorithm, an ant is invoked in response to submitting a job to the Grid and this ant surfs the network to find the best resource to deliver the job to. In the ParticleZ algorithm, each node plays a role as a particle and moves toward other particles by sharing its workload among them. We will be simulating our proposed approaches using a Grid simulation toolkit (GridSim) dedicated to Grid simulations. The performance of the algorithms will be evaluated using several performance criteria (e.g. makespan and load balancing level). A comparison of our proposed approaches with a classical approach called State Broadcast Algorithm and two random approaches will also be provided. Experimental results show the proposed algorithms (AntZ and ParticleZ) can perform very well in a Grid environment. In particular, the use of particle swarm optimization, which has not been addressed in the literature, can yield better performance results in many scenarios than the ant colony approach

    Preventive effect of vitamin B6 on developmental toxicity of carbamazepine in mice

    Objective(s): Carbamazepine (CBZ) is an antiepileptic drug that is used widely for the treatment of epileptic seizures. Neural tube defects (NTDs), growth retardation, and nail hypoplasia are the most common features of teratogenic effects of this drug. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of vitamin B6 on the developmental toxicity of CBZ on mice. Materials and Methods: Sixty BALB/c pregnant mice were divided into four experimental and two control groups. Two experimental groups received daily intraperitoneal injection (IP) of 30 mg/kg (I) or 60 mg/kg (II) of CBZ on gestational days (GD) 6 to 15. Two other experimental groups received daily IP injection of 30 mg/kg (III) or 60 mg/kg (IV) of CBZ with 10 mg/kg/day vitamin B6 by gavage 10 days prior to gestation and on GD 6 to 15. Two control groups received normal saline or Tween 20. Dams underwent Cesarean section on GD 18 and embryos were harvested. External/macroscopic observation of fetuses was done by stereomicroscope and external examination for malformations was recorded. Data analyzed by ANOVA and X 2 test using SPSS software. Results: The mean weight and crown-rump of the fetuses in both CBZ-treated experimental groups were significantly reduced compared with those of the control groups. Various malformations were detected such as brachygnathia, eye malformations, NTDs, vertebral deformity, brachydactyly and growth retardation. Vitamin B6 treatment significantly reduced various CBZ-induced malformations. Conclusion: This study showed that vitamin B6 has a preventive effect on the developmental toxicity of CBZ in mice that can be pursued further for clinical research

    Cyber Security Awareness Among College Students

    This study reports the early results of a study aimed to investigate student awareness and attitudes toward cyber security and the resulting risks in the most advanced technology environment: the Silicon Valley in California, USA. The composition of students in Silicon Valley is very ethnically diverse. The objective was to see how much the students in such a tech-savvy environment are aware of cyber-attacks and how they protect themselves against them. The early statistical analysis suggested that college students, despite their belief that they are observed when using the Internet and that their data is not secure even on university systems, are not very aware of how to protect their data. Also, it appears that educational institutions do not have an active approach to improve awareness among college students to increase their knowledge on these issues and how to protect themselves from potential cyber-attacks, such as identity theft or ransomware

    Developing FPGA-based Embedded Controllers Using Matlab/Simulink

    Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are emerging as suitable platforms for implementing embedded control systems. FPGAs offer advantages such as high performance and concurrent computing which makes them attractive in many embedded applications. As reconfigurable devices, they can be used to build the hardware and software components of an embedded system on a single chip. Traditional FPGA design flows and tools, requiring the use of Hardware Description Languages (HDLs), are in a different domain than standard control system design tools such as MATLAB/Simulink. This paper illustrates development of FPGA-based controllers by utilizing popular tools such as MATLAB/Simulink available for the design and development of control systems. The capability of DSP Builder is extended by developing a custom library of control system building blocks that facilitates rapid development of FPGA-based controllers in the familiar Matlab/Simulink environment. As a case study, this paper presents how the tools can be utilized to develop a FPGA-based controller for a laboratory scale air levitation system

    Teratogenic effects of gabapentin on the skeletal system of Balb/C mice fetuses

    Objectives: To evaluate the effects of gabapentin )GBP( administration on mice fetuses. Methods: This study was carried out in Birjand University of Medical Sciences during 2008. Thirty Balb/c pregnant mice were divided randomly into 3 groups: 2 experimental groups that received 25 mg/kg )I( and 50 mg/kg )II( of GBP intraperitoneally for the first 15 days of pregnancy, and a control group that received normal saline. External observations of day 18 fetuses and skeleton double staining were performed. Results: Both experimental groups showed similar disorders that can be categorized as the following: 1( decrease of fetal body weight and increase of fetal resorption, 2( macroscopic malformations, and 3( skeletal malformations. Fetal body weights were significantly lower, and fetus resorptions were significantly higher in both treated groups compared to the control group. Macroscopic malformations included exencephaly, limbs defects, brachygnathia, vertebral column deformity, and fetuses with severe retarded growth. Skeletal malformations included delayed ossification, scoliosis, calvaria deformity, and mandibular hypoplasia. Conclusion: This study revealed that GBP can induce previously unreported severe malformations if it is used continuously during the implantation, neurulation, and organogenesis stages of pregnancy. Therefore, it is suggested that great caution should be exercised in using GBP during the early stages of pregnancy until further studies are performed to better understand these effects
