K -> pi pi and a light scalar meson

We explore the Delta-I= 1/2 rule and epsilon'/epsilon in K -> pi pi transitions using a Dyson-Schwinger equation model. Exploiting the feature that QCD penguin operators direct K^0_S transitions through 0^{++} intermediate states, we find an explanation of the enhancement of I=0 K -> pi pi transitions in the contribution of a light sigma-meson. This mechanism also affects epsilon'/epsilon.Comment: 7 pages, REVTE

In Vivo Observation of Structural Changes in Neocortical Catecholaminergic Projections in Response to Drugs of Abuse

Catecholaminergic (dopamine and norepinephrine) projections to the cortex play an important role in cognitive functions and dysfunctions including learning, addiction, and mental disorders. While dynamics of glutamatergic synapses have been well studied in such contexts, little is known regarding catecholaminergic projections, owing to lack of robust methods. Here we report a system to monitor catecholaminergic projections in vivo over the timeframes that such events occur. Green fluorescent protein (GFP) expression driven by tyrosine hydroxylase promoter in a transgenic mouse line enabled us to perform two-photon imaging of cortical catecholaminergic projections through a cranial window. Repetitive imaging of the same axons over 24 h revealed the highly dynamic nature of catecholaminergic boutons. Surprisingly, administration of single high dose methamphetamine (MAP) induced a transient increase in bouton volumes. This new method opens avenues for longitudinal in vivo evaluation of structural changes at single release sites of catecholamines in association with physiology and pathology of cortical functions

A new ultra high energy gamma ray telescope at Ohya mine

The search for ultra high energy gamma rays coming from point sources is one of the main experimental aims. A fast air shower timing system was constructed at ICRR for the study of the angular resolution of the system and operated approximately half a year. The characteristics of the surface array of Ohya air shower telescope is described

Numerical analysis of tsunami-induced inundation behind building along coasts

To evaluate the effects of impermeable rigid buildings located near vertical quay walls on the reduction of the inundation water volumes due to run-up tsunamis, a full-scale three-dimensional numerical analysis is performed using a three-dimensional coupled fluid-structure-sediment interaction model. Numerical results show that the inundation water volume can be reduced with an increase in the shielding ratio of the long-shore width of the buildings with respect to the total width of the coastline, and accordingly the buildings located along the coasts have the reduction effects of the inundation water volume. This suggests that countermeasures against tsunamis can be evaluated in a\ud comprehensive manner in terms of not only shore protection facilities for tsunamis at relatively high frequencies but also such buildings. Furthermore, the inundation depth at the seaward side of the buildings and the cross-shore bottom flow velocity at the gaps between the buildings increase with the shielding ratio, suggesting an increase in tsunami force and the onset of local scouring when the shielding ratio is large. Consequently, when designing buildings along the coasts, it is essential to consider an appropriate balance between the reduction effects of the inundation water volume and the instability of the buildings caused by the tsunami force and the local scouring

Coherent quasi-particles-to-incoherent hole-carriers crossover in underdoped cuprates

In underdoped cuprates, only a portion of the Fermi surface survives as Fermi arcs due to pseudogap opening. In hole-doped La2_{2}CuO4_4, we have deduced the "coherence temperature" TcohT_{coh} of quasi-particles on the Fermi arc above which the broadened leading edge position in angle-integrated photoemission spectra is shifted away from the Fermi level and the quasi-particle concept starts to lose its meaning. TcohT_{coh} is found to rapidly increase with hole doping, an opposite behavior to the pseudogap temperature TT^*. The superconducting dome is thus located below both TT^* and TcohT_{coh}, indicating that the superconductivity emerges out of the coherent Fermionic quasi-particles on the Fermi arc. TcohT_{coh} remains small in the underdoped region, indicating that incoherent charge carriers originating from the Fermi arc are responsible for the apparently metallic transport at high temperatures
