    Spin configuration in a frustrated ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic thin film system

    We have studied the magnetic configuration in ultrathin antiferromagnetic Mn films grown around monoatomic steps on an Fe(001) surface by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and ab-initio-parametrized self-consistent real-space tight binding calculations in which the spin quantization axis is independent for each site thus allowing noncollinear magnetism. Mn grown on Fe(001) presents a layered antiferromagnetic structure. In the regions where the Mn films overgrows Fe steps the magnetization of the surface layer is reversed across the steps. Around these defects a frustration of the antiferromagnetic order occurs. Due to the weakened magnetic coupling at the central Mn layers, the amount of frustration is smaller than in Cr and the width of the wall induced by the step does not change with the thickness, at least for coverages up to seven monolayers.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Orbitally-driven Peierls state in spinels

    We consider the superstructures, which can be formed in spinels containing on B-sites the transition-metal ions with partially filled t2g levels. We show that, when such systems are close to itinerant state (e.g. have an insulator-metal transition), there may appear in them an orbitally-driven Peierls state. We explain by this mechanism the very unusual superstructures observed in CuIr2S4 (octamers) and MgTi2O4 (chiral superstructures) and suggest that similar phenomenon should be observed in NaTiO2 and possibly in some other systems.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    How network-based and set-based visualizations aid consistency checking in ontologies

Ontologies describe complex world knowledge in that they consist of hierarchical relations, such as is-a, which can be expressed by quantifiers or sets, and various binary relations, which can be expressed by links or networks. Should hierarchical relations be distinguished from other binary relations as essentially different ones in building cognitively accessible systems of ontologies? In this study, two kinds of ontology visualizations, a network-based visualization (SOVA) and a set-based visualization (concept diagrams), are empirically compared in the case of consistency checking. Participants were presented with one diagram and then asked to answer the question of whether the meaning of the diagram was contradictory. Our results showed that SOVA is more effective than concept diagrams, suggesting that to represent hierarchical and binary relations of ontologies in a way based on networks suits human cognition when checking ontologies' consistencies

    Optical Flow on Evolving Surfaces with an Application to the Analysis of 4D Microscopy Data

    We extend the concept of optical flow to a dynamic non-Euclidean setting. Optical flow is traditionally computed from a sequence of flat images. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce variational motion estimation for images that are defined on an evolving surface.     Photoelectron Angular Distributions for Two-photon Ionization of Helium by Ultrashort Extreme Ultraviolet Free Electron Laser Pulses

    Phase-shift differences and amplitude ratios of the outgoing ss and dd continuum wave packets generated by two-photon ionization of helium atoms are determined from the photoelectron angular distributions obtained using velocity map imaging. Helium atoms are ionized with ultrashort extreme-ultraviolet free-electron laser pulses with a photon energy of 20.3, 21.3, 23.0, and 24.3 eV, produced by the SPring-8 Compact SASE Source test accelerator. The measured values of the phase-shift differences are distinct from scattering phase-shift differences when the photon energy is tuned to an excited level or Rydberg manifold. The difference stems from the competition between resonant and non-resonant paths in two-photon ionization by ultrashort pulses. Since the competition can be controlled in principle by the pulse shape, the present results illustrate a new way to tailor the continuum wave packet.Comment: 5 pages, 1 table, 3 figure

    Proportion of intracerebral haemorrhage due to cerebral amyloid angiopathy in the East and West: Comparison between single hospital centres in Japan and the United Kingdom

    PURPOSE: We investigated whether the proportion of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) due to cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) differs between patients admitted to hospitals in the East and the West. METHODS: This international cross-sectional study included consecutive spontaneous ICH patients admitted to one stroke centre in the United Kingdom (Western centre origin) and one in Japan (Eastern centre origin) during the same period. We classified spontaneous ICH into "CAA-related" or "other" using the Edinburgh CT-based diagnostic criteria. We used multivariable logistic regression analyses to assess the relationship between CAA-related ICH and geographical location or ethnicity (White vs. East Asian or other ethnicities). Sensitivity analyses were performed using the modified Boston MRI-based diagnostic criteria for CAA-related ICH. RESULTS: Of 433 patients (median age, 72 years; Western centre origin, 55%), 15% were classified as CAA-related ICH. In the multivariable logistic regression model, Eastern centre and ethnicity had a lower proportion of CAA-related ICH (odds ratio [OR] vs Western centre origin 0.55, 95%CI 0.31-0.98; OR [vs. White] 0.47, 95%CI 0.25-0.87); these findings remained robust in sensitivity analyses. The estimated incidence of "other" (non-CAA) ICH (attributed to hypertensive arteriopathy) was 2.5-fold higher in East Asian populations. CONCLUSIONS: The proportion CAA-related ICH is lower in an Eastern compared to a Western hospital ICH population; this might be explained by a higher incidence of ICH related to hypertensive arteriopathy in East Asian populations, suggesting that optimal ICH prevention strategies might differ between the East and West

    We write the IIB Green-Schwarz action in certain general classes of curved backgrounds threaded with Ramond-Ramond fluxes. The fixing of the kappa symmetry in the light-cone gauge and the use of supergravity Bianchi identities simplify the task. We find an expression that truncates to quartic order in the spacetime spinors and relays interesting information about the vacuum structure of the worldsheet theory.     We establish a dynamical equivalence between the bosonic part of pure type I supergravity in D=10 and a D=1 non-linear sigma-model on the Kac-Moody coset space DE(10)/K(DE(10)) if both theories are suitably truncated. To this end we make use of a decomposition of DE(10) under its regular SO(9,9) subgroup. Our analysis also deals partly with the fermionic fields of the supergravity theory and we define corresponding representations of the generalized spatial Lorentz group K(DE(10)).Comment: 28 page

    KK^- - nucleus relativistic mean field potentials consistent with kaonic atoms

    KK^- atomic data are used to test several models of the KK^- nucleus interaction. The t(ρ\rho)ρ\rho optical potential, due to coupled channel models incorporating the Λ\Lambda(1405) dynamics, fails to reproduce these data. A standard relativistic mean field (RMF) potential, disregarding the Λ\Lambda(1405) dynamics at low densities, also fails. The only successful model is a hybrid of a theoretically motivated RMF approach in the nuclear interior and a completely phenomenological density dependent potential, which respects the low density theorem in the nuclear surface region. This best-fit KK^- optical potential is found to be strongly attractive, with a depth of 180 \pm 20 MeV at the nuclear interior, in agreement with previous phenomenological analyses.Comment: revised, Phys.     Chiral Generations on Intersecting 5-branes in Heterotic String Theory

    We show that there exist two 27 and one 27 bar of E6, net one D=4, N=1 chiral matter supermultiplet as zero modes localized on the intersection of two 5-branes in the E8 x E8 heterotic string theory. The smeared intersecting 5-brane solution is used via the standard embedding to construct a heterotic background, which provides, after a compactification of some of the transverse dimensions, a five-dimensional Randall-Sundrum II like brane-world set-up in heterotic string theory. As a by-product, we present a new proof of anomaly cancellation between those from the chiral matter and the anomaly inflow onto the brane without small instanton.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures; references added, typo correcte
