Momentum-Dependent Hybridization Gap and dispersive in-gap state of The Kondo Semiconductor SmB6

We report the temperature-dependent three-dimensional angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the Kondo semiconductor SmB6_6. We found a difference in the temperature dependence of the peaks at the X and Γ\Gamma points, due to hybridization between the Sm 5d conduction band and the nearly localized Sm 4f state. The peak intensity at the X point has the same temperature dependence as the valence transition below 120 K, while that at the Γ\Gamma point is consistent with the magnetic excitation at Q=(0.5,0.5,0.5) below 30 K. This suggests that the hybridization with the valence transition mainly occurs at the X point, and the initial state of the magnetic excitation is located at the Γ\Gamma point.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Electronic-Structure-Driven Magnetic Ordering in a Kondo Semiconductor CeOs2Al10

We report the anisotropic changes in the electronic structure of a Kondo semiconductor CeOs2_2Al10_{10} across an anomalous antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (T0T_0) of 29 K, using optical conductivity spectra. The spectra along the aa- and cc-axes indicate that a cc-ff hybridization gap emerges from a higher temperature continuously across T0T_0. Along the b-axis, on the other hand, a different energy gap with a peak at 20 meV appears below 39 K, which is higher temperature than T0T_0, because of structural distortion. The onset of the energy gap becomes visible below T0T_0. Our observation reveals that the electronic structure as well as the energy gap opening along the b-axis due to the structural distortion induces antiferromagnetic ordering below T0T_0.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Improvement of responsivity of Unified Power Flow Controller in digital control system

    Get PDF
The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) can flexibly manage power flow and maintain line voltage. The UPFC consists of two inverters in parallel side and series side. In parallel side, the reactive power can be compensated to improve the power factor. In series side, the voltage drop can be compensated to maintain proper line voltage. It is necessary for the operation in both sides to output the current and the voltage quickly and accurately. As the method for the UPFC control, the deadbeat control is applied. The deadbeat control is able to realize a quick response of the current and voltage control for only a sampling period compared with the general PI control. A principle and simulation results are presented in this paper.2013 International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems, ICEMS 2013; Busan; South Korea; 26 October 2013 through 29 October 201

Electronic inhomogeneity in EuO: Possibility of magnetic polaron states

We have observed the spatial inhomogeneity of the electronic structure of a single-crystalline electron-doped EuO thin film with ferromagnetic ordering by employing infrared magneto-optical imaging with synchrotron radiation. The uniform paramagnetic electronic structure changes to a uniform ferromagnetic structure via an inhomogeneous state with decreasing temperature and increasing magnetic field slightly above the ordering temperature. One possibility of the origin of the inhomogeneity is the appearance of magnetic polaron states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Isotropic photonic band gap and anisotropic structures in transmission spectra of two-dimensional 5-fold and 8-fold symmetric quasiperiodic photonic crystals

We measured and calculated transmission spectra of two-dimensional quasiperiodic photonic crystals (PCs) based on a 5-fold (Penrose) or 8-fold (octagonal) symmetric quasiperiodic pattern. The photonic crystal consisted of dielectric cylindrical rods in air placed normal to the basal plane on vertices of tiles composing the quasiperiodic pattern. An isotropic photonic band gap (PBG) appeared in the TM mode, where electric fields were parallel to the rods, even when the real part of a dielectric constant of the rod was as small as 2.4. An isotropic PBG-like dip was seen in tiny Penrose and octagonal PCs with only 6 and 9 rods, respectively. These results indicate that local multiple light scattering within the tiny PC plays an important role in the PBG formation. Besides the isotropic PBG, we found dips depending on the incident angle of the light. This is the first report of anisotropic structures clearly observed in transmission spectra of quasiperiodic PCs. Based on rod-number and rod-arrangement dependence, it is thought that the shapes and positions of the anisotropic dips are determined by global multiple light scattering covering the whole system. In contrast to the isotropic PBG due to local light scattering, we could not find any PBGs due to global light scattering even though we studied transmission spectra of a huge Penrose PC with 466 rods.Comment: One tex file for manuscript and 12 PNG files for figures consisting of Fig.1a-d, 2,3, ...

Kondo-like behaviors in magnetic and thermal properties of single crystal Tm5Si2Ge2

We grew the single crystal of stoichiometric Tm5Si2.0Ge2.0 using a Bridgeman method and performed XRD, EDS, magnetization, ac and dc magnetic susceptibilities, specific heat, electrical resistivity and XPS experiments. It crystallizes in orthorhombic Sm5Ge4-type structure. The mean valence of Tm ions in Tm5Si2.0Ge2.0 is almost trivalent. The 4f states is split by the crystalline electric field. The ground state exhibits the long range antiferromagnetic order with the ferromagnetically coupled magnetic moments in the ac plane below 8.01 K, while the exited states exhibit the reduction of magnetic moment and magnetic entropy and -log T-behaviors observed in Kondo materials.Comment: 8 pages, 13 figure

Switch from conventional to high-flux membrane reduces the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome and mortality of hemodialysis patients

Switch from conventional to high-flux membrane reduces the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome and mortality of hemodialysis patients. The use of a high-flux membrane, which eliminates larger molecular weight solutes with better biocompatibility, has steadily increased since the discovery of beta-2 microglobulin (β2m) amyloidosis in 1985. The long-term effects of a dialyzer membrane on morbidity and mortality are not completely understood. To examine the membrane effect as a factor of carpal tunnel syndrome onset and mortality, multivariate Cox regression analysis with time-dependent covariate was conducted on 819 patients from March 1968 to November 1994 at a single center. Two hundred and forty-eight of the patients were either switched from the conventional to high-flux membrane or treated only with a high-flux membrane. Fifty-one patients underwent a CTS operation and 206 died. Membrane status (on high-flux or on conventional) was considered as time-dependent covariate and risk was adjusted for age, gender, type of renal disease and calendar year of dialysis initiation. The relative risk of CTS was reduced to 0.503 (P < 0.05) and mortality 0.613 (P < 0.05) by dialysis on the high-flux membrane, compared to the conventional membrane. Serial measurements of β2m indicated significantly lower β2m to persist in patients on the high-flux membrane. The high-flux membrane decreased the risk of morbidity and mortality substantially. Larger molecule elimination was shown important not only for preventing β2m amyloidosis, but for prolonging survival of dialysis patients as well

Design and lyophilization of lipid nanoparticles for mRNA vaccine and its robust immune response in mice and nonhuman primates

mRNA and lipid nanoparticles have emerged as powerful systems for the preparation of vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The emergence of novel variants or the necessity of cold chain logistics for approved mRNA vaccines undermines the investigation of next-generation systems that could preserve both potency and stability. However, the correlation between lipid nanoparticle composition and activity is not fully explored. Here, we screened a panel of ionizable lipids in vivo and identified lead lipid nanoparticles with a branched-tail lipid structure. Buffer optimization allowed the determination of lyophilization conditions, where lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated mRNA encoding SARS-CoV-2 spike protein could induce robust immunogenicity in mice after 1 month of storage at 5°C and 25°C. Intramuscularly injected lipid nanoparticles distributed in conventional dendritic cells in mouse lymph nodes induced balanced T helper (Th) 1/Th2 responses against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. In nonhuman primates, two doses of 10 or 100 μg of mRNA induced higher spike-specific binding geometric mean titers than those from a panel of SARS-CoV-2-convalescent human sera. Immunized sera broadly inhibited the viral entry receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) from binding to the spike protein in all six strains tested, including variants of concern. These results could provide useful information for designing next-generation mRNA vaccines

The Discovery of a Very Narrow-Line Star Forming Obat a Redshift of 5.66ject

We report on the discovery of a very narrow-line star forming object beyond redshift of 5. Using the prime-focus camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope together with a narrow-passband filter centered at λc\lambda_{\rm c} = 8150 \AA with passband of Δλ\Delta\lambda = 120 \AA, we have obtained a very deep image of the field surrounding the quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 at a redshift of 5.74. Comparing this image with optical broad-band images, we have found an object with a very strong emission line. Our follow-up optical spectroscopy has revealed that this source is at a redshift of z=5.655±0.002z=5.655\pm0.002, forming stars at a rate 13 h0.72 M\sim 13 ~ h_{0.7}^{-2} ~ M_\odot yr1^{-1}. Remarkably, the velocity dispersion of Lyα\alpha-emitting gas is only 22 km s1^{-1}. Since a blue half of the Lyα\alpha emission could be absorbed by neutral hydrogen gas, perhaps in the system, a modest estimate of the velocity dispersion may be \gtrsim 44 km s1^{-1}. Together with a linear size of 7.7 h0.71h_{0.7}^{-1} kpc, we estimate a lower limit of the dynamical mass of this object to be 2×109M\sim 2 \times 10^9 M_\odot. It is thus suggested that LAE J1044-0123 is a star-forming dwarf galaxy (i.e., a subgalactic object or a building block) beyond redshift 5 although we cannot exclude a possibility that most Lyα\alpha emission is absorbed by the red damping wing of neutral intergalactic matter.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures.
