    Heterogeneity in pure microbial systems: experimental measurements and modeling

    Cellular heterogeneity influences bioprocess performance in ways that until date are not completely elucidated. In order to account for this phenomenon in the design and operation of bioprocesses, reliable analytical and mathematical descriptions are required. We present an overview of the single cell analysis, and the mathematical modeling frameworks that have potential to be used in bioprocess control and optimization, in particular for microbial processes. In order to be suitable for bioprocess monitoring, experimental methods need to be high throughput and to require relatively short processing time. One such method used successfully under dynamic conditions is flow cytometry. Population balance and individual based models are suitable modeling options, the latter one having in particular a good potential to integrate the various data collected through experimentation. This will be highly beneficial for appropriate process design and scale up as a more rigorous approach may prevent a priori unwanted performance losses. It will also help progressing synthetic biology applications to industrial scale

    Electrolyte jet machining for surface texturing of Inconel 718

    Electrolyte jet machining is an emerging non-conventional machining process which is capable of selectively applying multi-scale surface textures. Surfaces processed in this way do not suffer from thermal damage and hence this technique is highly suited to finishing procedures in high value manufacturing across the aerospace and biomedical sectors. Furthermore, input variables can be modified dynamically to create functional graduation across component surfaces. In this study, the development and design of a custom-built EJM system is described, and the capability of the EJM platform to machine and create surface textures in Inconel 718, a widely used nickel based super alloy, is investigated. Through control of machine path programming and parameter variation, multi-scale surface textures are created which have the potential to enhance bonding with subsequent coating layers and also provide fluid dynamic advantage

    Kinematic Orbits and the Structure of the Internal Space for Systems of Five or More Bodies

    The internal space for a molecule, atom, or other n-body system can be conveniently parameterised by 3n-9 kinematic angles and three kinematic invariants. For a fixed set of kinematic invariants, the kinematic angles parameterise a subspace, called a kinematic orbit, of the n-body internal space. Building on an earlier analysis of the three- and four-body problems, we derive the form of these kinematic orbits (that is, their topology) for the general n-body problem.     Kinematics of the ring-like nebula SuWt 2

    We present the first detailed spatio-kinematical analysis and modelling of the Southern planetary nebula SuWt 2. This object presents a problem for current theories of planetary nebula formation and evolution, as it is not known to contain a central post-main sequence star. Deep narrowband [NII]6584 images reveal the presence of faint bipolar lobes emanating fromthe edges of the nebular ring. Longslit observations of the H-alpha and [NII]6584 emission lines were obtained using EMMI on the 3.6-m ESO-NTT. The spectra reveal the nebular morphology as a bright torus encircling the waist of an extended bipolar structure. By deprojection, the inclination of the ring is found to be 68\degr ±\pm 2\degr (c.f. ~90\degr for the double A-type binary believed to lie at the centre of the nebula), and the ring expansion velocity is found to be 28 km/s. Our findings are discussed with relation to possible formation scenarios for SuWt 2. Through comparison of the nebular heliocentric systemic velocity, found here to be -25 ±\pm 5 km/s, and the heliocentric systemic velocity of the double A-type binary, we conclude that neither component of the binary could have been the nebular progenitor. However, we are unable to rule out the presence of a third component to the system, which would have been the nebula progenitor.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Reducing the number and impact of outbreaks of nosocomial viral gastroenteritis: Time-series analysis of a multidimensional quality improvement initiative

    Background Nosocomial norovirus infections and their control measures disrupt patient care, increase staff workload and raise healthcare costs. Objective To determine the impact on outbreaks of nosocomial viral gastroenteritis, staff and patients affected, and bed closures of a multidimensional quality improvement (QI) initiative focused on education; improved patient surveillance; early automated recognition and notification of infection of index patients; and proactive care and control measures. Methods In a pragmatic, retrospective, observational study, we compared numbers of suspected/confirmed norovirus outbreaks at Portsmouth Hospitals National Health Service Trust (PHT) with regional and national data, before and after a multidimensional QI initiative. We also compared mean daily bed closures due to norovirus-like symptoms. At PHT only we recorded patient and staff numbers with norovirus-like symptoms, and days of disruption due to outbreaks. Results Annual outbreak numbers fell between 2009-2010 and 2010-2014 by 91% at PHT compared with 15% and 28% for Wessex and England, respectively. After April 2010, recorded outbreaks were 8 (PHT), 383 (Wessex) and 5063 (England). For the winter periods from 2010/ 2011 to 2013/2014, total bed closures due to norovirus were 38 (PHT; mean 0.5 per week), 3565 (Wessex hospitals; mean 48.8 per hospital per week) and 2730 (England; mean 37.4 per hospital per week). At PHT, patients affected by norovirus-like symptoms fell by 92%, affected staff by 81% and days of disruption by 88%. Conclusions A multiyear QI programme, including use of real-time electronic identification of patients with norovirus-like symptoms, and an early robust response to suspected infection, resulted in virtual elimination of outbreaks. The ability to identify index cases of infection early facilitates prompt action to prevent ongoing transmission and appears to be a crucial intervention

    Strategy bifurcation and spatial inhomogeneity in a simple model of competing sellers

    We present a simple one-parameter model for spatially localised evolving agents competing for spatially localised resources. The model considers selling agents able to evolve their pricing strategy in competition for a fixed market. Despite its simplicity, the model displays extraordinarily rich behavior. In addition to ``cheap'' sellers pricing to cover their costs, ``expensive'' sellers spontaneously appear to exploit short-term favorable situations. These expensive sellers ``speciate'' into discrete price bands. As well as variety in pricing strategy, the ``cheap'' sellers evolve a strongly correlated spatial structure, which in turn creates niches for their expensive competitors.     Objectives To describe the prevalence of certain health conditions in newly arrived refugees to Sydney, and thereby help inform screening practices. Study type A clinical audit of routinely collected pathology results. Methods Demographics and pathology results from a nurse-led health assessment program for newly arrived refugees over the two years 2013 and 2014 were analysed. Prevalences of screened conditions were calculated and compared by countries of birth and other demographic features. A specific category of those from Middle Eastern countries was created for comparative analysis. Results Pathology results were analysed for 3307 persons from a total of 4768 seen by the program (69.4%). Anaemia was found in 6% of males and 7.6% of females. Vitamin D deficiency (1%) countries
