Television and the Vietnam War
The Vietnam war was the first major American conflict to be presented to the public through the medium of television. Inasmuch as a case may be made that television has a potential for influencing American national security policy through public opinion, considerable controversy has centered on the coverage of that war by the major networks. Roger Mudd, reflecting upon the impact of television on the conduct of military operations in Vietnam, once wondered \u27\u27whether in the future a democracy which has uncensored television in every home will ever be able to fight a war however moral or just.
RXTE Observation of Cygnus X-1: II. Timing Analysis
We present timing analysis for a Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observation of
Cygnus X-1 in its hard/low state. This was the first RXTE observation of Cyg
X-1 taken after it transited back to this state from its soft/high state.
RXTE's large effective area, superior timing capabilities, and ability to
obtain long, uninterrupted observations have allowed us to obtain measurements
of the power spectral density (PSD), coherence function, and Fourier time lags
to a decade lower in frequency and half a decade higher in frequency than
typically was achieved with previous instruments. Notable aspects of our
observations include a weak 0.005 Hz feature in the PSD coincident with a
coherence recovery; a `hardening' of the high-frequency PSD with increasing
energy; a broad frequency range measurement of the coherence function,
revealing rollovers from unity coherence at both low and high frequency; and an
accurate determination of the Fourier time lags over two and a half decades in
frequency. As has been noted in previous similar observations, the time delay
is approximately proportional to f^(-0.7), and at a fixed Fourier frequency the
time delay of the hard X-rays compared to the softest energy channel tends to
increase logarithmically with energy. Curiously, the 0.01-0.2 Hz coherence
between the highest and lowest energy bands is actually slightly greater than
the coherence between the second highest and lowest energy bands. We carefully
describe all of the analysis techniques used in this paper, and we make
comparisons of the data to general theoretical expectations. In a companion
paper, we make specific comparisons to a Compton corona model that we have

RXTE Observation of Cygnus X-1: Spectral Analysis
We present the results of the analysis of the broad-band spectrum of Cygnus
X-1 from 3.0 to 200 keV, using data from a 10 ksec observation by the Rossi
X-ray Timing Explorer. The spectrum can be well described phenomenologically by
an exponentially cut-off power law with a photon index Gamma = 1.45 +/- 0.02 (a
value considerably harder than typically found), e-folding energy E_fold = 162
+/- 9 keV, plus a deviation from a power law that formally can be modeled as a
thermal blackbody with temperature kT_bb = 1.2 +/1 0.2 keV. Although the 3 - 30
keV portion of the spectrum can be fit with a reflected power law with Gamma =
1.81 +/- 0.01 and covering fraction f = 0.35 +/- 0.02, the quality of the fit
is significantly reduced when the HEXTE data in the 30 - 100 keV range is
included, as there is no observed hardening in the power law within this energy
range. As a physical description of this system, we apply the accretion disc
corona models of Dove, Wilms & Begelman (1997) --- where the temperature of the
corona is determined self-consistently. A spherical corona with a total optical
depth tau = 1.6 +/- 0.1 and an average temperature kT_c = 87 +/- 5 keV,
surrounded by an exterior cold disc, does provide a good description of the
data (reduced chi-squared = 1.55). These models deviate from the data by up to
7% in the 5 - 10 keV range, and we discuss possible reasons for these
discrepancies. However, considering how successfully the spherical corona
reproduces the 10 - 200 keV data, such ``photon-starved'' coronal geometries

Bench-to-bedside review: Amelioration of acute renal impairment using ethyl pyruvate
Inflammation and oxidative stress cause renal impairment. Renal failure exacerbates the effect of oxidative stress on many organ systems. Antioxidants can prevent or treat renal failure in various experimental models and clinical situations. Pyruvate is an endogenous antioxidant with beneficial effects in animal models of oxidative stress. Because sodium pyruvate rapidly degrades in solution, a simple derivative of pyruvic acid, namely ethyl pyruvate, has been investigated as a therapeutic agent in preclinical studies. Ethyl pyruvate reduces organ system damage in ischaemia/reperfusion injury and haemorrhagic and endotoxic shock, at least in part through its antioxidant action. In addition, ethyl pyruvate appears to have direct beneficial effects on cytokine expression and proinflammatory gene regulation. The effect is long lasting and, importantly, even when it is administered after the onset of inflammation it can ameliorate organ damage and improve survival. Ethyl pyruvate is a widely used as a food additive and was shown to be safe in phase I clinical trials. We suggest ethyl pyruvate warrants further evaluation in the management of acute renal impairment
The 67 Hz Feature in the Black Hole Candidate GRS 1915+105 as a Possible ``Diskoseismic'' Mode
The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) has made feasible for the first time
the search for high-frequency (~ 100 Hz) periodic features in black hole
candidate (BHC) systems. Such a feature, with a 67 Hz frequency, recently has
been discovered in the BHC GRS 1915+105 (Morgan, Remillard, & Greiner). This
feature is weak (rms variability ~0.3%-1.6%), stable in frequency (to within ~2
Hz) despite appreciable luminosity fluctuations, and narrow (quality factor Q ~
20). Several of these properties are what one expects for a ``diskoseismic''
g-mode in an accretion disk about a 10.6 M_sun (nonrotating) - 36.3 M_sun
(maximally rotating) black hole (if we are observing the fundamental mode
frequency). We explore this possibility by considering the expected luminosity
modulation, as well as possible excitation and growth mechanisms---including
turbulent excitation, damping, and ``negative'' radiation damping. We conclude

Preliminary X-ray diffraction analysis of YqjH from Escherichia coli: a putative cytoplasmic ferri-siderophore reductase
YqjH is a cytoplasmic FAD-containing protein from Escherichia coli; based on homology to ViuB of Vibrio cholerae, it potentially acts as a ferri-siderophore reductase. This work describes its overexpression, purification, crystallization and structure solution at 3.0 A resolution. YqjH shares high sequence similarity with a number of known siderophore-interacting proteins and its structure was solved by molecular replacement using the siderophore-interacting protein from Shewanella putrefaciens as the search model. The YqjH structure resembles those of other members of the NAD(P)H:flavin oxidoreductase superfamily
Sex Differences in rt-PA Utilization at Hospitals Treating Stroke: The National Inpatient Sample.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sex and race disparities in recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) use have been reported. We sought to explore sex and race differences in the utilization of rt-PA at primary stroke centers (PSCs) compared to non-PSCs across the US.
METHODS: Data from the National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample (NIS) 2004-2010 was utilized to assess sex differences in treatment for ischemic stroke in PSCs compared to non-PSCs.
RESULTS: There were 304,152 hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of ischemic stroke between 2004 and 2010 in the analysis: 75,160 (24.7%) patients were evaluated at a PSC. A little over half of the patients evaluated at PSCs were female (53.8%). A lower proportion of women than men received rt-PA at both PSCs (6.8 vs. 7.5%, p \u3c 0.001) and non-PSCs (2.3 vs. 2.8%, p \u3c 0.001). After adjustment for potential confounders the odds of being treated with rt-PA remained lower for women regardless of presentation to a PSC (OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.81-0.94) or non-PSC (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.82-0.94). After stratifying by sex and race, the lowest absolute treatment rates were observed in black women (4.4% at PSC, 1.9% at non-PSC). The odds of treatment, relative to white men, was however lowest for white women (PSC OR = 0.85, 95% CI 0.78-0.93; non-PSC OR = 0.80, 95% CI 0.75-0.85). In the multivariable model, sex did not modify the effect of PSC certification on rt-PA utilization (p-value for interaction = 0.58).
CONCLUSION: Women are less likely to receive rt-PA than men at both PSCs and non-PSCs. Absolute treatment rates are lowest in black women, although the relative difference in men and women was greatest for white women
Hawkes process as a model of social interactions: a view on video dynamics
We study by computer simulation the "Hawkes process" that was proposed in a
recent paper by Crane and Sornette (Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA 105, 15649
(2008)) as a plausible model for the dynamics of YouTube video viewing numbers.
We test the claims made there that robust identification is possible for
classes of dynamic response following activity bursts. Our simulated timeseries
for the Hawkes process indeed fall into the different categories predicted by
Crane and Sornette. However the Hawkes process gives a much narrower spread of
decay exponents than the YouTube data, suggesting limits to the universality of
the Hawkes-based analysis.Comment: Added errors to parameter estimates and further description. IOP

A trans10-18:1 enriched fraction from beef fed a barley grain-based diet induces lipogenic gene expression and reduces viability of HepG2 cells.
Beef fat is a natural source of trans (t) fatty acids, and is typically enriched with either t10-18:1 or t11-18:1. Little is known about the bioactivity of individual t-18:1 isomers, and the present study compared the effects of t9-18:1, cis (c)9-18:1 and trans (t)-18:1 fractions isolated from beef fat enriched with either t10-18:1 (HT10) or t11-18:1 (HT11). All 18:1 isomers resulted in reduced human liver (HepG2) cell viability relative to control. Both c9-18:1 and HT11were the least toxic, t9-18:1had dose response increased toxicity, and HT10 had the greatest toxicity (P<0.05). Incorporation of t18:1 isomers was 1.8-2.5 fold greater in triacylglycerol (TG) than phospholipids (PL), whereas Δ9 desaturation products were selectively incorporated into PL. Culturing HepG2 cells with t9-18:1 and HT10 increased (P<0.05) the Δ9 desaturation index (c9-16:1/16:0) compared to other fatty acid treatments. HT10 and t9-18:1 also increased expression of lipogenic genes (FAS, SCD1, HMGCR and SREBP2) compared to control (P<0.05), whereas c9-18:1 and HT11 did not affect the expression of these genes. Our results suggest effects of HT11 and c9-18:1 were similar to BSA control, whereas HT10 and t-9 18:1 (i.e. the predominant trans fatty acid isomer found in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils) were more cytotoxic and led to greater expression of lipogenic genes
