    Differential demographic responses of two sympatric turtle species to anthropogenic disturbance

    Species extinction is a major crisis facing the biological world today. Conservation biologists are striving to determine what factors contribute to species declines. Many of these factors are anthropogenic, with issues such as climate change, invasive species, pollution, and habitat alteration and destruction concurrently affecting populations. Turtles have proven to be particularly vulnerable; among the vertebrate taxa, turtles are the most endangered. These studies seek to determine the effects of anthropogenic habitat alteration on two sympatric species of turtles: the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) and the ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata) using fecundity, survival estimates, and/or capture-mark-recapture data from long-term research sites. The first study examines how fecundity and survival rates vary across age classes for a riverine, anthropogenically-affected population of C. picta compared to previously studied smaller, more remote systems. The second study examines how different amounts of human development affect survivorship of adult T. ornata. According to the results of the first study, C. picta appear to be resilient across age classes to the effects of human presence. This was somewhat surprising, given observations of road mortality and injuries to adult turtles, as well as increased amount of disturbance while turtles were nesting. Juvenile survivorship was very low, though this could be due to methodological issues or biological causes. More research into juvenile survivorship is needed. The second study found that the survivorship of adult female T. ornata decreased in a developed area compared to a refuge site. This implies that construction of cottages and the management of vegetation associated with development was a deleterious effect on survivorship. However, the same pattern was not seen with the construction of a bike path through the refuge site, although this could be due to a lack of time for effects to manifest in this long-lived population. Continued monitoring will be necessary to determine with confidence the long-term effects of bike path construction. Overall, these studies present a mixed view on the effects of habitat alterations on turtles. One species, C. picta, appeared resilient to human presence; the other, T. ornata, did not appear to be resilient to human development. These results demonstrate that different types of human disturbance are likely to have different effects (e.g., human presence vs. human development), and that different species may demonstrate different levels of resilience

    Perceived Differences in Knowledge About Interactive Technology Between Young Adults and Their Parents

    This study was designed to investigate generational differences in knowledge about interactive technology (i.e., cell phones, social networking, email, video chat) between parents and their young adult children. Parents (n = 555) and young adults (n = 604) residing in the United States provided information about their knowledge in the use of interactive technology. Young adult children also reported their perceptions of their parents’ technological knowledge for the various technologies. Comparisons of young adult self-reported technological knowledge and their parents’ own reports of technological knowledge revealed that young adults were perceived to be much more knowledgeable than their parents (by both the young adults and their parents) regardless of the technology medium. The largest differences between parents and their young adult children were associated with newer interactive technologies, with the largest gap between parent and young adult knowledge in the area of social networking. Perceived differences between parents and their young adult children were smaller among the technologies that have been in use longer (such as such as e-mail), and larger among the newer modes of interactive technology (e.g., video chat)

    Carnivore Territoriality: Simulating Economic Selection of Territories

    We are developing theoretical models of territorial behavior of carnivores. This work will be useful for predicting the abundance of wolf (Canis lupus) territories in Montana and Idaho. Coupled with a patch occupancy model, it will provide more accurate estimates of abundance of wolves in each state. Ultimately, our work will also provide a better understanding of territorial behavior of a large carnivore. We are simulating the territory selection process for carnivores choosing patches on a landscape based on benefits of prey, where prey distribution ranges from overdispersed to highly clumped. Simulated carnivores will also consider hypothesized costs of patch ownership, including travel, competition, and mortality risk. In each simulation, carnivores will acquire patches for a territory as economically as possible based on these benefits and costs. Simulating various combinations of these hypothesized benefits and costs of patch ownership will provide predictions of territorial behavior. We can then compare these predictions to the territories of real wolves to determine which model is most predictive of actual wolf behavior. Starting with a model for benefits of prey and costs of travel, we found that prey distribution may influence mean size, quality, and fragmentation of simulated territories. Based on these preliminary results, we might expect differences in size or quality of territories in regions with different prey communities. Most importantly, this work provides a foundation from which we will build more complex models of territorial behavior of carnivores

    A comparison of model ensembles for attributing 2012 West African rainfall

    In 2012, heavy rainfall resulted in flooding and devastating impacts across West Africa. With many people highly vulnerable to such events in this region, this study investigates whether anthropogenic climate change has influenced such heavy precipitation events. We use a probabilistic event attribution approach to assess the contribution of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, by comparing the probability of such an event occurring in climate model simulations with all known climate forcings to those where natural forcings only are simulated. An ensemble of simulations from 10 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) is compared to two much larger ensembles of atmosphere-only simulations, from the Met Office model HadGEM3-A and from weather@home with a regional version of HadAM3P. These are used to assess whether the choice of model ensemble influences the attribution statement that can be made. Results show that anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have decreased the probability of high precipitation across most of the model ensembles. However, the magnitude and confidence intervals of the decrease depend on the ensemble used, with more certainty in the magnitude in the atmosphere-only model ensembles due to larger ensemble sizes from single models with more constrained simulations. Certainty is greatly decreased when considering a CMIP5 ensemble that can represent the relevant teleconnections due to a decrease in ensemble members. An increase in probability of high precipitation in HadGEM3-A using the observed trend in sea surface temperatures (SSTs) for natural simulations highlights the need to ensure that estimates of natural SSTs are consistent with observed trends in order for results to be robust. Further work is needed to establish how anthropogenic forcings are affecting the rainfall processes in these simulations in order to better understand the differences in the overall effect

Recent studies have implicated chemosensory cues, for instance cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in insects, as a key source of this information. Here, using the broad-horned flour beetle (Gnatocerus cornutus), we investigated the importance of contact-derived rival male CHCs in informing male perception of sperm competition risk and intensity. We experimentally perfumed virgin females with male CHCs via direct intersexual contact and measured male pre- and post-copulatory investment in response to this manipulation. Using chemical analysis, we verified that this treatment engendered changes to perfumed female CHC profiles, but did not make perfumed females “smell” mated. Despite this, males responded to these chemical changes. Males increased courtship effort under low levels of perceived competition (from 1–3 rivals), but significantly decreased courtship effort as perceived competition rose (from 3–5 rivals). Furthermore, our measurement of ejaculate investment showed that males allocated significantly more sperm to perfumed females than to control females. Together, these results suggest that changes in female chemical profile elicited by contact with rival males do not provide males with information on female mating status, but rather inform males of the presence of rivals within the population and thus provide a means for males to indirectly assess the risk of sperm competition.Natural Environment Research CouncilRoyal SocietyLeverhulme Early Career Fellowshi

    Proactive Management of Pneumonia Epizootics in Bighorn Sheep in Montana—Project Update

    Pneumonia epizootics are a major challenge for effective management of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). Approximately half of the herds in Montana have suffered die-offs since the 1980s, many of which were pneumonia events. A set of models that identify risk of pneumonia and the best management decisions given that risk would be of great value for proactive management of pneumonia epizootics. Our first objective is to design and test a risk model that will help predict a herd’s risk of pneumonia. We hypothesize that various factors increase risk through pathogen exposure, pathogen spread, and disease susceptibility. Analysis of these factors comparing herds with and without recent pneumonia histories using Bayesian logistic regression will allow us to design a risk model. Our second objective is to develop a proactive decision model that incorporates estimates of pneumonia risk to help evaluate costs and benefits of alternative proactive actions appropriate to those estimates. We will use a Structured Decision Making framework, which provides a deliberative, transparent, and defensible decision-making process that is particularly valuable in complex decision-making environments such as wildlife disease management. Together the resulting risk and decision models, to be completed this year, will help managers estimate pneumonia risk and identify the best management action based on both the severity of each herd’s predicted risk and costs and benefits of competing management alternatives.     Nursing Students Teaching Medical Students: An Interdisciplinary Teaching Experience

    For a number of years, Advanced Practice Nursing ( APN) students have taught interested 1st year medical students to perform intramuscular injections prior to their participation in community flu clinics. When several 4th year medical students needed documentation of competency in intravenous (IV) cannulation prior to participating in an elective rotation at another institution, the Director of Interdisciplinary Partnerships in the Graduate School of Nursing requested assistance from the medical school\u27s Dean of Students. In fact, all medical students need IV therapy training prior to graduation, not just those who seek out elective rotations at other medical schools. Integration of IV therapy training into the Undergraduate Medical Education Surgery Clerkship curriculum supports the clinical objectives of the Surgery Clerkship along with the developing use of simulation within the medical school. This need led to the development of this interprofessional simulation education initiative.     Wolf Pack Distribution in Relation to Heavy Harvest in Southwest Alberta

    Gray wolf (Canis lupus) populations are difficult to monitor because wolves can be elusive and occur in low densities.  Harvest can further complicate wolf monitoring by affecting wolf behavior, altering pack structure, and potentially reducing probability of detection.  Currently, Montana and Idaho use patch occupancy models to monitor wolves at state-wide scales.  These models were originally developed prior to the initiation of wolf harvest and there is growing concern that current occupancy estimates are becoming less reliable as harvest continues.  Our objectives were to determine whether we could estimate wolf distribution for a heavily harvested wolf population and assess how harvest may be affecting that distribution.  We surveyed potential rendezvous sites and collected DNA samples from wolf scats for genetic analysis and surveyed hunters for wolf sightings in southwestern Alberta from 2012 to 2014. We used a Bayesian approach to fit dynamic occupancy models to the encounter histories while accounting for false-positive detections using JAGS and Program R.  We found both habitat and anthropogenic factors influenced wolf occupancy parameters in southwestern Alberta and detection probability varied by survey method.  Our preliminary results suggest wolf pack distribution is fairly consistent but that source-sink dynamics may be occurring in certain regions of the study area.  Despite heavy harvest pressure, southwestern Alberta appears to maintain a stable wolf population, although this is possibly due to immigration from nearby regions
