    Hypothesis testing near singularities and boundaries

    The likelihood ratio statistic, with its asymptotic χ2\chi^2 distribution at regular model points, is often used for hypothesis testing. At model singularities and boundaries, however, the asymptotic distribution may not be χ2\chi^2, as highlighted by recent work of Drton. Indeed, poor behavior of a χ2\chi^2 for testing near singularities and boundaries is apparent in simulations, and can lead to conservative or anti-conservative tests. Here we develop a new distribution designed for use in hypothesis testing near singularities and boundaries, which asymptotically agrees with that of the likelihood ratio statistic. For two example trinomial models, arising in the context of inference of evolutionary trees, we show the new distributions outperform a χ2\chi^2.Comment: 32 pages, 12 figure

    A generalized AIC for models with singularities and boundaries

    The Akaike information criterion (AIC) is a common tool for model selection. It is frequently used in violation of regularity conditions at parameter space singularities and boundaries. The expected AIC is generally not asymptotically equivalent to its target at singularities and boundaries, and convergence to the target at nearby parameter points may be slow. We develop a generalized AIC for candidate models with or without singularities and boundaries. We show that the expectation of this generalized form converges everywhere in the parameter space, and its convergence can be faster than that of the AIC. We illustrate the generalized AIC on example models from phylogenomics, showing that it can outperform the AIC and gives rise to an interpolated effective number of model parameters, which can differ substantially from the number of parameters near singularities and boundaries.     Barriers and facilitators to accessing and utilising post-treatment psychosocial support by Black men treated for prostate cancer—a systematic review and qualitative synthesis

    Purpose: To synthesise findings from published studies on barriers and facilitators to Black men accessing and utilising post-treatment psychosocial support after prostate cancer (CaP) treatment. Methods: Searches of Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Central, CINAHL plus and Scopus were undertaken from inception to May 2021. English language studies involving Black men aged ≥18 and reporting experiences of, or suggestions for, psychosocial support after CaP treatment were included. Low or moderate quality studies were excluded. Searches identified 4,453 articles and following deduplication, 2,325 were screened for eligibility. Two independent reviewers carried out screening, quality appraisal and data extraction. Data were analysed using thematic synthesis. Results: Ten qualitative studies involving 139 Black men were included. Data analysis identified four analytical constructs: experience of psychosocial support for dealing with treatment side effects (including impact on self-esteem and fear of recurrence); barriers to use of psychosocial support (such as perceptions of masculinity and stigma around sexual dysfunction); facilitators to use of psychosocial support (including the influence of others and self-motivation); and practical solutions for designing and delivering post-treatment psychosocial support (the need for trusted healthcare and cultural channels). Conclusions: Few intervention studies have focused on behaviours among Black CaP survivors, with existing research predominantly involving Caucasian men. There is a need for a collaborative approach to CaP care that recognises not only medical expertise but also the autonomy of Black men as experts of their illness experience, and the influence of cultural and social networks

    Neural effects of oxytocin and mimicry in frontotemporal dementia: A randomized crossover study

    OBJECTIVE: To determine whether intranasal oxytocin, alone or in combination with instructed mimicry of facial expressions, would augment neural activity in patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in brain regions associated with empathy, emotion processing, and the simulation network, as indexed by blood oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signal during fMRI. METHODS: In a placebo-controlled, randomized crossover design, 28 patients with FTD received 72 IU intranasal oxytocin or placebo and then completed an fMRI facial expression mimicry task. RESULTS: Oxytocin alone and in combination with instructed mimicry increased activity in regions of the simulation network and in limbic regions associated with emotional expression processing. CONCLUSIONS: The findings demonstrate latent capacity to augment neural activity in affected limbic and other frontal and temporal regions during social cognition in patients with FTD, and support the promise and need for further investigation of these interventions as therapeutics in FTD.     Can people guess what happened to others from their reactions?

    Are we able to infer what happened to a person from a brief sample of his/her behaviour? It has been proposed that mentalising skills can be used to retrodict as well as predict behaviour, that is, to determine what mental states of a target have already occurred. The current study aimed to develop a paradigm to explore these processes, which takes into account the intricacies of real-life situations in which reasoning about mental states, as embodied in behaviour, may be utilised. A novel task was devised which involved observing subtle and naturalistic reactions of others in order to determine the event that had previously taken place. Thirty-five participants viewed videos of real individuals reacting to the researcher behaving in one of four possible ways, and were asked to judge which of the four ‘scenarios’ they thought the individual was responding to. Their eye movements were recorded to establish the visual strategies used. Participants were able to deduce successfully from a small sample of behaviour which scenario had previously occurred. Surprisingly, looking at the eye region was associated with poorer identification of the scenarios, and eye movement strategy varied depending on the event experienced by the person in the video. This suggests people flexibly deploy their attention using a retrodictive mindreading process to infer events

    Critical Constraints on Chiral Hierarchies

    We consider the constraints that critical dynamics places on models with a top quark condensate or strong extended technicolor (ETC). These models require that chiral-symmetry-breaking dynamics at a high energy scale plays a significant role in electroweak symmetry breaking. In order for there to be a large hierarchy between the scale of the high energy dynamics and the weak scale, the high energy theory must have a second order chiral phase transition. If the transition is second order, then close to the transition the theory may be described in terms of a low-energy effective Lagrangian with composite ``Higgs'' scalars. However, scalar theories in which there are more than one Φ4\Phi^4 coupling can have a {\it first order} phase transition instead, due to the Coleman-Weinberg instability. Therefore, top-condensate or strong ETC theories in which the composite scalars have more than one Φ4\Phi^4 coupling cannot always support a large hierarchy. In particular, if the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model solved in the large-NcN_c limit is a good approximation to the high-energy dynamics, then these models will not produce acceptable electroweak symmetry breaking.Comment: 10 pages, 1 postscript figure (appended), BUHEP-92-35, HUTP-92/A05
