    PARENTS’ PERCEPTIONS OF FACTORS INFLUENCING ENROLLMENT OF KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS IN CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS

    Parents compare the costs of sending their children to private Christian schools with the benefits of their children attending the schools. Christian school leaders benefit from understanding the factors influencing parents’ decisions to enroll their children in Christian private schools. In this qualitative study, the researcher interviewed nine parents from two different Christian private schools affiliated with Christian churches in South Florida to hear what factors influenced them to enroll their kindergarten through fifth grade child or children in a Christian private school. An interview guide developed by the researcher was followed during the phone interviews. In addition, six of the nine were asked additional questions on the interview guide to learn about the factors influencing them to continue reenrolling in the Christian private school. The participants shared their stories about the school choice decision making process and the factors influencing their final decision to choose a Christian private school. The data was cross-analyzed to find similarities among the responses of the participants. Each participant had more than one influencing factor; however, there were three factors common among the participants. Factors influencing their decisions for enrollment were valuing a biblical foundation, dissatisfaction with public education, and previous school experiences. Christian school leaders will find the implications of this study impacts their school enrollment as they capitalize on the factors influencing the enrollment decisions of parents

    Mine project aims to understand and evaluate Milan\u2019s changes during an important season for its nationally and internationally statement. Moving from the traditionally idea that "Milan makes itself," the setting up of Simplon\u2019s Exhibition was an important and valuable opportunity of cooperation of private and public efforts, with the direct participation of the Municipality. Milan was not only the protagonist of the urban and architectural transformation, but also of process of improvement of social conditions and of increase of cultural activities. It also consider the legacy of this event after the conclusion of the Exhibition: with Acquario's exception, none of the most iconic buildings of the white city lasted to remind the magnificent work of Simplon's Exhibition, which left a much rich bequeath to Milan. Attraverso lo studio delle carte degli archivi milanesi e della stampa coeva, si intende mettere in luce come la mostra del 1906, oltre a costituire un momento di fondamentale confronto con le realtà economico-produttive del mondo, fu lo strumento attraverso il quale il capoluogo lombardo poté esprimere le proprie capacità e potenzialità. La classe dirigente cittadina, coesa intorno alla necessità di garantire il successo dell’evento, operò soprattutto con l’intento di presentare il volto tutt’altro che effimero di una metropoli moderna e cosmopolita: dentro e fuori dalla “città bianca”.Milan wanted to take on the project of an International Exhibition although it was unrelated to the overblown expositive approach.     From art to astrophysics: how art inspires science communication. A show for planetariums to convey astronomical concepts throughout images, dialogue and art exhibition.

    The process which gives life to artworks because painters are inspired by the charm of the Sky is a well-known process. Beauty and mystery of Cosmos have always given mankind, and still give, a lot of masterpieces, from the Halley comet painted by Giotto in the Scrovegni Chapel to the Starry Nights by Vincent Van Gogh. But, what to say about the opposite process? How could art inspire science? In many ways but we propose here one in a format appropriate for science communication. We start from some paintings of Alessandro Rinaldi, an Italian quoted artist present at 54th Biennale International Art Exhibition of Venice. Focusing our attention on few Rinaldi paintings representing some cosmic scenes, such as starry skies, constellations, moons, we will perform a dialogue between Science and Art, played by two women. The dialogue will be written assembling skills in astrophysics, science communication, screenwriting and art. Final product will be a drama performed in a particular theatre, built primarily for educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and the night sky: a planetarium. Public will be involved in an immersive show of artistic and astronomical images, and will listen to the two characters, Lady A and Lady S, discussing both artistic and scientific aspects of each painting: from the raw material used for painting to the real knowledge of represented celestial objects. Few, selected and correct astronomical notions will be conveyed in a new, funny and attractive way also for people not quite interested in science. The proposed format could be regarded as new for science outreach, where Astronomy could be replaced with Natural and Environmental Sciences, while dialogues around scientific issues could be performed inside planetariums as well on other stages. But there is more: well also tell public that Science doesn’t make Art loose her charm and beauty, rather she makes her stronger because mindful of her potential; Art doesn’t make science loose her strictness and reliability, rather she makes her stronger because mindful of her beauty. Public will have the opportunity of seeing real artworks in a exhibit inside the planetarium and filling in a questionnaire before and after the show. In this way changing in scientific notions and the related perception of artworks will be collected in order to have a realistic feedback about the efficiency of our project

    From structural colors to super-hydrophobicity and achromatic transparent protective coatings: Ion plating plasma assisted TiO2 and SiO2 nano-film deposition

    The implementation of the Ion Plating Plasma Assisted technology in the area of surface functionalization for structural color and relic preservation applications is presented. Interferometric structural colors on irregular bumped Titanium surfaces and transparent and achromatic nano films on ancient ceramic artifact have been investigated. Titanium metal and ceramic supports have been utilized for the surface functionalization tests: A metallic electron beam additive manufactured Titanium component and an ancient tile of the XIX century, which was characterized by strong chromatic valence and by a mixed porous and glazed surfaces, have been considered. A reactive magnetron sputtering Ion Plating Plasma Assisted apparatus operating in Argon or Oxygen atmospheres for TiO2 and SiO2 deposition has been utilized. Preliminary tests with two plasma treatments were carried out for optimal processing conditions definition. TiO2 nano-film deposition on irregular Ti surfaces has generated light direction depending color-changing surfaces while good achromatic and transparent coatings were obtained by using SiO2 coating. The high processing flexibility of the Ion plating technology is discussed. The SiO2 IPPA surfaces treatment resulted more convenient for restorative and preservation ancient historical tile was used to finally test the optimized process with Ion Beam Electron Microscopy, which was carried out on the tile porous structure, confirmed the high flexibility and efficiency of the innovative IPPA technology

    C4BQ0: a genetic marker of familial HCV-related liver cirrhosis.

[email protected] Abstract BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Host may have a role in the evolution of chronic HCV liver disease. We performed two cross-sectional prospective studies to evaluate the prevalence of cirrhosis in first degree relatives of patients with cirrhosis and the role of two major histocompatibility complex class III alleles BF and C4 versus HCV as risk factors for familial clustering. FINDINGS: Ninety-three (18.6%) of 500 patients with cirrhosis had at least one cirrhotic first degree relative as compared to 13 (2.6%) of 500 controls, (OR 7.38; CI 4.21-12.9). C4BQ0 was significantly more frequent in the 93 cirrhotic patients than in 93 cirrhotic controls without familiarity (Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium: chi2 5.76, P = 0.016) and in 20 families with versus 20 without aggregation of HCV related cirrhosis (29.2% versus 11.3%, P = 0.001); the association C4BQ0-HCV was found almost only in cirrhotic patients with a family history of liver cirrhosis. CONCLUSIONS: Our studies support the value of C4BQ0 as a risk indicator of familial HCV related cirrhosis

    Cytokine serum profile in a group of Sicilian Nonagenarians

    The aim of our study was to evaluate the possibility of using multiplex analysis of the cytokine profile as a marker for successful aging by comparing cytokine plasmatic levels of a group of Sicilian nonagenarians with those of young controls. We analyzed a panel of 17 cytokines, comprehensive of haematopoietic factors T helper 1 (Th1), Th2, inflammation regulatory cytokines, and chemokines. The assay was carried out using the Luminex system. Interleukin (IL)-6 levels (p = 0.01) were increased in nonagenarians, whereas no modifications of other proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines were observed. Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and IL-2 levels are unmodified, suggesting a substantial maintenance of relevant T cell functions. In addition, a significant increase of IL-12 serum levels in nonagenarians versus young controls that might be related to the increase of natural killer (NK) cell functions characterizing aging processes was observed. The analysis of Th2 cytokines show an increase of IL-13 and a reduction of IL-4 levels mirroring the maintenance of some effector's mechanisms of the immunoresponse in advanced ages. Our results suggest that the multiplex analysis of cytokine levels might be useful in defining a successful aging profile

    PCSK9-D374Y mediated LDL-R degradation can be functionally inhibited by EGF-A and truncated EGF-A peptides: An in vitro study

    Background and aims: Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) binds to low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) through the LDLR epidermal growth factor-like repeat A (EGF-A) domain and induces receptor internalization and degradation. PCSK9 has emerged as a novel therapeutic target for hypercholesterolemia. Clinical studies with PCSK9 inhibiting antibodies have demonstrated strong LDL-c lowering effects, but other therapeutic approaches using small molecule inhibitors for targeting PCSK9 functions may offer supplementary therapeutic options. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of synthetic EGF-A analogs on mutated (D374Y) PCSK9-D374Y mediated LDLR degradation in vitro. Methods: Huh7 human hepatoma cells were transiently transfected to overexpress the gain-of-function D374Y PCSK9 mutation, which has been associated with severe hypercholesterolemia in humans. Results: Transient transfection of cells with PCSK9-D374Y expression vector very effectively enhanced degradation of mature LDLR in Huh7. Treatment with both EGF-A and EGF-A truncated peptides inhibited this effect and showed increased LDLR protein in Huh7 cells transfected with PCSK9-D374Y in a clear concentration dependent manner. Huh7 transfected cells treated with increasing concentration of EGF-A analogs also showed an increase internalization of labeled Dil-LDL. Conclusions: The result of our study shows that EGF-A analogs are able to effectively hamper the enhanced degradation of LDLR in liver cells expressing PCSK9-D374Y

    Relevance of gamma interferon, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interleukin-10 gene polymorphisms to susceptibility to Mediterranean spotted fever.

    The acute phase of Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is characterized by dramatic changes in cytokine production patterns, clearly indicating their role in the immunomodulation of the response against the microorganism, and the differences in cytokine production seem to influence the extent and severity of the disease. In this study, the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) -308G/A (rs1800629) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) -1087G/A (rs1800896), -824C/T (rs1800871), and -597C/A (rs1800872) and the gamma interferon (IFN-γ) T/A SNP at position +874 (rs2430561) were typed in 80 Sicilian patients affected by MSF and in 288 control subjects matched for age, gender, and geographic origin. No significant differences in TNF-α -308G/A genotype frequencies were observed. The +874TT genotype, associated with an increased production of IFN-γ, was found to be significantly less frequent in MSF patients than in the control group (odds ratio [OR], 0.18; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.06 to 0.51; P corrected for the number of genotypes [Pc], 0.0021). In addition, when evaluating the IFN-γ and IL-10 genotype interaction, a significant increase of +874AA/-597CA (OR, 5.31; 95% CI, 2.37 to 11.88; Pc, 0.0027) combined genotypes was observed. In conclusion, our data strongly suggest that finely genetically tuned cytokine production may play a crucial role in the regulation of the immune response against rickettsial infection, therefore influencing the disease outcomes, ranging from nonapparent or subclinical condition to overt or fatal disease
